Wyland teased on the 6 o'clock news today that Grieg Stire will try out as tight end for the fall. Story at 11.

Edit:T-U story https://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/UAlbany-s-Greig-Stire-trying-out-for-football-team-12786052.php

University at Albany senior Greig Stire, who used his brawn effectively with the basketball team the past four years, is throwing it around on the football field for the Great Danes.

Stire, who is 6-foot-7 and 255 pounds, is trying out as a tight end during UAlbany's spring football practice that began on Tuesday.

...

But his college career might not be over. Under NCAA rules, he has one season of athletic eligibility left that he can use with the football team.

"I spent the last few years watching him run up and down the court,'' UAlbany football coach Greg Gattuso said. "You'd really have to be an idiot to not think he has a football-type body and mentality. It was just something he wanted to give it a shot, so we're going to see how it goes. I've seen guys do this. We're going to give him an opportunity. He had a really good first day, so we'll see how it goes."

Stire, who wore No. 43 on the basketball court, donned No. 32 on Tuesday. On one play, he caught a short pass from UAlbany backup quarterback Vincent Testaverde

"I just told him, let's get through a couple of practices and see where you're at,'' Gattuso said. "If things are going well, let's keep going. I think he's got a good attitude about it."

Gattuso said Stire played football in high school. "Greig's a great athlete and to get out here and see him moving around with a football helmet on, is definitely differnt,'' UAlbany quarterback Will Brunson said. "I thought he did a great job today."

UAlbany had Rashad Barksdale, who finished his baseball career and then suited up with the Great Danes for one football season. He went on to be drafted and play for the Kansas City Chiefs.

On a more modest level, UAlbany could use another good tight end after losing fullback/tight end Anthony Manzo-Lewis to graduation.

Today's T-U story said Ibi took off his knee brace during practice. It was a new one and was a little tight, he'll wear it again, but he was moving well without it. Assuming the first day was non-contact drills

Said two years eligibility left, "assuming he gets the medical redshirt as expected" for last year

SAY WHA!? Haha that's awesome lol.

YES!  The two freshman coming in are 6'7" - 6'6" but freshman and will likely be redshirted anyway.
