SUNY Free Tuition

Tuition plan demands students stay in New York New aid requires residency equal to number of years benefit received

"A recipient shall agree to reside exclusively in New York State, and shall not be employed in any other state, for a continuous number of years equal to the duration of the award," the legislation states.

Recipients must also sign a contract that would convert the scholarship into a student loan in the event that they decide to take a job out of state within the period of obligation. Exceptions can be made for students who continue to pursue an undergraduate education after the five-year maximum runs out, or begin pursuing a graduate degree full or part time.

Speaking Monday morning on a conference call with members of newspaper editorial boards, Cuomo said the rationale for the residency requirement was clear: "Why should New Yorkers pay for your college education, and then you pick up and move to California?" he said. "The concept of investing in you (and) your education is that you're going to stay here and be an asset to the state. If you don't want to stay here, then go to California now — let them pay for your college education."

Probably the only good thing about this. But I think it should be 2x the award...so if you go to a 4yr school, 8yrs minimum.

The requirement makes sense. Not only did I leave New York the year after graduation but so did my roommates.

I think this plan helps SUNY campuses like Albany and may sink some of the lower tier privates. Columbia and Cornell are fine but a Saint Rose, Siena lost a lot in their value proposition. Why again pay $30,000 at Siena for tuition?

SUNY tuition is rising, even as free tuition becomes reality

"Before we levy yet another increase, let's conduct a full and honest systemwide efficiency audit and implement the most innovative practices the great minds of our system can devise to share services, cut down on administrative costs, and costs associated with facility usage," said Student Assembly President and Trustee Marc Cohen.

SUNY officials, meanwhile, argued they wouldn't have to increase tuition if the state properly invested in its public university system.

According to the chart in the article, SBU & UB charge more for non resident undergrad ($24,180) than UA & Bingo ($21,550)

Most folks in California, Georgia or Michigan have never heard of SUNY. I've lived in all three. If Cuomo wants credit for free tuition he should be pushing the SUNY Centers to become household names like UCLA or Georgia Tech. That means big time athletics and top academics (the opposite of access).

I wasn't aware nor did I care that Tennessee offers free tuition to their community colleges. Free tuition to Georgia Tech or UCLA would be much more impressive.

Most Americans would guess SUNY is the name of a foreign transfer student not major university. Athletics and branding need to be the focus else who cares if it's free.
