So from what I can gather, it seems like ESPN is taking the WatchESPN App and ESPN3 and taking it away from your basic cable subscription service and making it a separate $4.99 streaming service. However, this streaming service will not allow you to watch the basic ESPN stations (ESPN, ESPN2 etc...).

I would assume this means we would all need to pay $4.99 a month to watch UAlbany and America East sporting events on the this new streaming service. I'm also going to assume this will hurt viewership of small mid-major conferences. Me personally, I'll pay the $4.99 a month, but this is a very interesting development considering AE and most mid-majors have contracts with ESPN for online streaming.

I have cable that is paid for by my complex right now so this doesn't really affect me but when I get into a house this will certainly be much better than having a cable package or SlingTV or <insert here> for $20/mo+ just to get ESPN3.

I like it.

  • 1 month later...

so I just sent a tweet to the AE to find out about this. The new service starts April 12th. From what I have read it seems some events maybe moved specifically to ESPN+ and will not be on the ESPN3/WatchESPN sites. I just saw the Ivy League signed a deal with ESPN to broadcast games and in article it mentioned the America East signed on with ESPN+. Article also stated that Ivy League will have some games on ESPN3 and some on ESPN+. I'm also wondering if ESPN+ will replace AETV.

We maybe going to subscription to watch UA football, basketball and others sports on ESPN.

Per Deadspin article I read:

Quote

While certain aspects, like the MLB and NHL games, are brand new, one of ESPN3's main draws is a wealth of college games in lesser-watched sports or conferences, as well as expanded coverage of Grand Slam tennis and global competitions like cricket. The network has so far been vague about which leagues and games will get cannibalized from ESPN3, or how many, but ESPN did confirm that some of ESPN3's programming will change.

“Most ESPN+ programming will be new and additive, not available to our existing nets (including ESPN3),” a spokesperson for ESPN told Deadspin. “ESPN3 will still have thousands of live events and, while some content will shift to ESPN+, we will actively program live events across both platforms.”

ESPN3 is already paid for by your Internet providers*—who, of course, pass the cost on to you—so it’s not exactly possible to unsubscribe from it. But ESPN+, this new separate service that does pretty much what ESPN3 does, will cost an additional $5 a month if you want it. Neat.

I feel like I am making a big deal of this, but to me this could change dynamic of access to sporting events for UA and AE. The thing with all of this is it's only a cost of $5.

I will say...I have this feeling that ESPN is going to very slowly start and phase out ESPNU and ESPNews. ESPNews is useless at this point. I can see them switching all ESPNU content over to ESPN+.

Also cut the cord and didn't look back. Currently using apartment subsidized free cable but before moving here was using SlingTV, etc. and it was fine. Now there are other options like YouTubeTV, etc.

Sling TV used to stink, would buffer all the time. Service is now TIGHT! Can't tell the last year from cable. Initially it was rough.
