Under Armour All-American

TOWSON, Md. – UAlbany men’s lacrosse commit Connor Fields has been named an Under Armour All-American, solidifying him as one of the top high school players in the country.

This is his second-straight Under Armour All-America yearly award. Along with the honor, Fields will suit up for the North Team in the annual Under Armour All-America Boys Classic on Saturday, July 12th at 5 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.

Fields let up the scoreboard for Bishop Timon-St. Jude last year, setting a new New York state record for goals scored with 129 as a junior, surpassing the old record by 21. So far this season, he has netted 93 goals and 31 assists in 15 games, averaging over eight points per game.

Currently, Bishop Timon-St. Jude, in Buffalo, is 11-5 and ranked #2 in the state of New York by MaxPreps.

Fields is committed to the University at Albany and will suit up for the Great Danes next season.

Sean Gleason (Massapequa) 2015

Class A: Massapequa 23, Niskayuna 9

No one expected it. With two dangerous offenses carrying nationally ranked programs, a high-scoring nailbiter seemed more appropriate for Wednesday’s New York state semifinal between Niskayuna and Massapequa, not a 23-9 shellacking in the Chiefs’ favor.

Even on the field after the game, Massapequa seemed to be in disbelief, though elated. Tim Radowski’s group knew what they were capable of doing - in fact, they’d been lighting up scoreboards all spring - but to do it on a big stage with a championship berth on the line provided an unbelievable sense of confidence heading into Saturday’s state final.

“We have a high-powered offense with a lot of scorers and all six of us can take their guy to the cage and make things happen,” said junior Carter Hawthorne (3g, 4a), one of six players with four or more points in the victory. “I don’t think it was really a message…that’s just the way we play. We were just firing on all cylinders and it’s a great feeling to get the win.”

While Niskayuna’s Mike D’Amario (Virginia) put the Silver Warriors on the board first, Massapequa responded and never looked back. The offense was clicking in transition, goalie Matt Valdini and his defense were making stops and impressive work by the face-off corps enabled the Chiefs to pile it on early and often, accumulating a 15-6 lead after the first half of play.

Whenever their opponent tallied and looked to gain any sort of momentum, Massapequa had an answer right away. The senior-laden defense, which also received stellar play from junior longpole Sean Gleason (Albany), clamped down and brought physicality to the table. Putting the ball on the ground led to quick transition offense cashed in by a multitude of scoring options.

Most impressively, All but seven of Massapequa’s 23 goals were unassisted, a glaring stat validated postgame when Radomski called his team the most unselfish group he’s ever had.

“At any time, any of our guys has the green light to take it to the cage,” Radomski said. “If they draw two, they know who to dump it off to, they’ll take the assist. No one feels like they have to shoot it.”

Before Wednesday night’s collapse, Niskayuna hadn’t allowed more than 11 goals all year. However, they had trounced teams in similar fashion, benefitting from an average schedule in the Albany area’s Section 2. Despite the lopsided score, Nisky’s offense looked solid in flashes but were unable to come up with key possessions and stops, allowing their Long Island counterparts to go on significant runs to put the game out of reach. D’Amario led the Silver Warriors with five points, while John Prendergast (Duke) and Aidan O’Brien (North Carolina) also had multi-point outings.

Massapequa, however, dominated time of possession thanks to Phil Brady going 23 of 36 at the face-off X, following up another great performance in Saturday’s LIC against one of the nation’s best in Gerard Arceri of Penn State. Recognizing that the face-off situation was a ‘question mark’ heading into the season, Radomski credited last year’s FOGO, Syracuse’s Joe DeMarco, for working with Brady everyday breaking down film.

In Saturday’s Class A final, they’ll face a Fayetteville-Manlius squad riding an 11-game winning streak that needed overtime to top Fairport in overtime in the semifinals. Casey Vock will have coverage from the downstates.

Connor Fields had a hat trick in the Under Armour All-America Game.

He was also mentioned in the broadcast of one of the Iroquois Nationals games when they were talking about Albany having to replace Miles next year. They spoke very highly of him.

Connor Fields:

Fields tallied 108 goals, 37 assists, 38 groundballs this season for Coach Mike Burke … Led team to a 14-5 mark … Chosen as the Buffalo News Prep Talk Male Athlete of the Year … Named Buffalo News Prep Talk and Catholic League Player of the Year … Four-time All-Western NY and All-League selection … National and NYS record holder for most goals in single season … Also played hockey, earning Player of the Year and All-State honors … … Bishop Timon-St.Jude Athlete of the year … Plans to major in business at Albany.

Fall ball? We list a scrimmage and an alumni game the weekend of 9/26-27. This is NOT listed on the Lax Power Fall Ball Schedule. Anyone know who is responsible for notifying Lax Power; OR is there something else in the works that we are waiting on before publishing?? Last year we played in the Yale fall tournament, but are not listed there this year.

Any thoughts on Friday scrimmage against Hill and Saturday vs alumni. I saw most of both and it is obviously VERY early, and the competition may not be a good judge, but we could be even more offensively explosive than last year [if that is even possible]. Several players who were/are expected to be key contributors did not play at all {Maloney, both Lasada's}. Drake and Osika seemed to play only sparingly. I could be wrong about who played and who did not as uniform numbers may have changed and/or switched. So if anyone has info on the suspected missing players it would be appreciated. Connor Fields was as advertised, but I wonder about his size and stamina against big time defenders. But he certainly is a finisher.

Other opinions and thoughts greatly appreciated.

30 in 30: Who are Way Early Tewaaraton Candidates (Men)?

http://laxmagazine.com/college_men/DI/2014-15/news/100614_30_in_30_who_are_way_early_mens_tewaaraton_picks_lacrosse

1. Lyle Thompson, Albany, Sr. A lyle_miles_thompson_albany_tewaaraton_award_300_usl_stroh.jpg?max_height=400&max_width=300Lyle (right) and Miles Thompson shared the 2014 Tewaaraton Award. With Miles now a volunteer assistant coach, Lyle is the favorite to become the first men's repeat winner in the award's history. (John Strohsacker)

Lyle was co-winner of the Tewaaraton Award last year with his brother Miles, who will serve as volunteer assistant coach with Great Danes this season. Will Lyle take the Tewaaraton solo this year, and become the first men's back-to-back winner in history? Lyle's skill and point-producing ability is undeniable (an all-time Division I men's record 128 in 2014 and 76 points shy of the career points record) but will his chances be tied to if or how far Albany goes in the post-season? One man's opinion: it shouldn't matter. There might not even be that steep of a drop off as some would think. There's a new, capable supporting cast in town around him.
