Saturday's scrimmage

Recommended Posts

Coach on Wyland today. Two minutes in Hooley took a charge from Iona's top player 6-8 250 and was "knocked out", sent to hospital. Is ok but has stiff neck & back, will practice Wednesday. Said Singletary was outstanding at point. Iona controlled tempo 1st 20 min & we shot too many 3s. 2nd 20 min we attacked the basket and got a lot of free throws. Stire played physical, Rowleys played well.

Coach also said Ray Sanders did great work as a 6-4 wing, and also mentioned Rich Peters.

I think exhibitions must be against non-Division I teams. Scrimmages may be against D-I but you can't have spectators, officially keep score, or talk about it in advance. Scrimmage also allow teaching, teams can agree to play and practice against certain defenses, while exhibition are under game conditions.

Less than two weeks!

Glad to hear CB talk about Singletary playing well. He mentioned him somewhere else also. Sounds like he may be our starting PG?

Providence announced they'll be unveiling their Big East Championship banner before our game. That should be fun.

I'll be shocked if he's not the starter...I'd go Singletary, Hooley, Dallas and the two Rowley brothers.

Interesting..looks like Coach Brown has his starters. Singletary, Hooley, Sanders, Rowley and Rowley. Green, Baker, Ennema, Stire and Peters as the next five off the bench. Sanders ahead of Ennema is probably the only real surprise..but it sounds like Coach Brown really likes his defense.

CB does value defense. I do think with a small(er) starting frontcourt - 6'6 and 6'8 - without a shot blocker we're going to need to be especially solid on perimeter defense without an eraser back there. Sanders will help that cause.

Surprised with Sanders starting, I'm not sure I noticed him much in the scrimmage. Brown probably feels they have enough scoring with Singletary, Hooley and Rowley on the floor.

One thing jumped out at me, the second unit has 4 underclassmen, two of them are true freshmen. That has to bode well for the future.

There were a lot of new faces to keep track of in the scrimmage but I thought Saunders played really well. The matchup on Peter Hooley was entertaining and a good showing for his defense. He plays like Gary Johnson but maybe more of shooter.

I like the young guys coming off the bench. No real pressure on them early in the season but a chance to build as the season goes on.
