  1. I was so impressed with the the entire basketball program last night. The team was prepared to play at the highest level. They worked so hard and showed that this program is headed for great things in the near future. I think that all this can be attributed to their leader: Coach Brown. I am lucky enough to know Will on a more personal level and have worked with him when I was a graduate assistant at Saint Rose. I knew then that Will had what it takes to be an excellent head basketball coach. He can identify talent, recruit it, and is an excellent x's and o's coach. What impresses me so much is the way he has molded this team to make sure that all the parts work together to complete the puzzle. Will is going to be succesful and will coach at the highest level at some point. Albany would be wise to enjoy his services for as long as they can keep him. He deserves a contract that shows the university believes in him (5yrs plus) and deserves to be paid like the up and comming coach he is. I am so proud of the way that Albany represented themselves this year. This can be atributed to the head coach and assitants (past and present). I am sure that Coach Driscoll and Spisto had huge smiles on their faces and were rooting this team on. CONGRATS WILL and Co.
  2. Will any of the AE games (besides the championship game) be on television? If so, what network?
  3. With an expected championship game in a few weeks and a sold out crowd, I would encourage the athletic department to think about the parking situation. With the frigid weather finally here, the department should think about running shuttle buses from the parking lots that are of distance so that people do not freeeze. Just another way to make going to a game fan and family friendly.
  4. I am very proud of Coach Barnes. He has come a long way in a short period of time. Brian was not a great player at Catholic Hig and had to work very hard to even walk-on at Albany. It just goes to show that a person who is willing to work hard, listen and be willing to learn and is always willing to go the extra mile can achieve his dream. Coach Barnes is a true basketball junky. He has a strong desire to be successful. I am will to bet this his job at RPI is only the beginning. Congrats! We are all rooting for you!
  5. Congrats to Coach Brown. Once again he has proven that anything he does can only be a positive for the UAlbany basketball program, the athletic department and for the University as a whole. With that being said, I am beginning to wonder if there is another factor that is causing the athletic director to move very cautiously towards a contract extension. I can only think of two reasons. One, Coach Brown was not his "guy." Two, (and I know that this will an unpopular belief) that Dr. McElroy wants to have a basketball coach of similar race and background. I surely hope that this is not the case! Please note, that this is just a thought. I am searching for reasons why this extension has not gotten done.
  6. The most important signee is the signature of Will Brown on a contract extension!
  7. I would like to know others' feelings on the loyalty being displayed by Albany Athletic Director, Lee McElroy. Three years ago he hired a head basketball coach who turned out to be the wrong fit for the university. He was a poor coach, and had very little personal qualities. He became such a problem, that he was forced to resign. Will Brown was named the interm head coach and did what I percieve as a great job holding the basketball program together. In the next two years, he helped move the basketball program towards respectability. He is a great public face for the program. He has done an outstanding job recruiting. He also showed remarkable improvement in the bottom line: WINS. All his hard work and dedication toward the university and how is he rewarded? His reward is an athletic director who is slow to negotiate a contract extension. Will Brown has nothing to prove. He is a winner, a class act and will be a successful coach for many years with or without Albany. Lee McElroy needs to smarten up and get this contract extension completed. Do not forget who came to your rescue Mr. McElroy!
  8. What is up with Coach Driscoll leaving or not returning?
  9. If I had to make a prediction, Coach Brown is not going anywhere. His wife is an Albany native. She has a very tight family. It would be hard for her to pick up and leave. Also Coach Brown's mother and father recently moved to the Captial District so that they could see their son more and watch their first grandchild grow up!
  10. I too also like the Iowa Connection. I have a growong concern regarding Brent Wilson. Offensively, he is becoming one dimensional. He is strictly a three point specialist. I would like to see him post a little more often. He needs to develop a mid range game that he can use. Maybe show the ball to the defender and use the bounce to get by and shot a 10-12 for jumper. I think he needs to add a bit more to his game beofre we label him as a future all leaguer. His game has holes.
  11. Coach Brennan seems to like it when he is the one making comments that ruffle some feathers or raise a few eyebrows. He does not like it when someone makes comments that gain attention. If Coach Brown said that Coppenwrath gets far too many calls, then I applaude him. He is absolutely correct. Coppenwrath has an awkward game. Because of this, he tends to get the friendly whistle. Coach Brown is very truthful when he speaks. I guess too many people in the Capital Region are used to hearing the crap (for lack of a better word) that comes out of Coach Lanier's mouth. I have never seen a coach say so much and have so little meaning behind it. Coach Brown is clear and too the point. His speaking skills are excellent. He must have taken a public speaking class while attending the prestigous academic institute Dowling!
  12. Well Said! Todd Martin is not good enough to play at some of the high Division II colleges in America.
  13. I can hold back no longer! You have to be kidding about Todd Martin being "handcuffed." To put it simply, he was awful. I think that we can ALL agree that Coach Brown has an eye for talent. He did an outstanding job recruiting for Saint Rose, brought in some of the best talent when he was at Sullivan, and his recruits at Alabany have not been too shabby (3 American East Rookie of the Years). Todd Martin could not cut it. He was not good enoug to contribute. His foot speed was slow (and that is being nice). It appeared that he had no clue what to do on the offensive end of the court. I would guess that Coach Brown had as much confidence in Martin as he had in Knotts. I feel bad for the situation that Coach Brown was in. He could on take Levi and Iati out of the game. When he needed to sub he had Martin or Knotts. I bet if you ask privately, Coach Brown would have rather put Coach Barnes in the game. That is not saying much. I saw Brian play at Catholic High in Troy. He had trouble being the 11th man on a ten man roster. You play your best players. Simply put, Todd Martin was not even close to being a servicable sub at the division one level.
  14. I for one never believed that your son was handcuffed. He started off the year with a bang. I thought that he played extremely well during the Siena game. Things got worse as the season progress. Todd made plays on the court that were not acceptable for a divison 1 player. His passes were often telegraphed and it was very clear that he did not have to foot speed to play the defense that Coach Brown demenaded out of his players. He had trouble putting the ball in the basket and never again attacked the boards like he did in the Siena game. The one good thing that could be said is that Todd parted ways from the UAlbany program before things got worse. With the freshman that Coach Brown brought in this year, your son's playing time would have certainly diminsihed more than it already had. I wish you and your son the best of luck. I think that everyone deserves a second chance to be successful and hopefully your son will find that at Troy State.
  15. FYI- One of the guards that Siena recruited: Bilal Benn (Philly kid) is going to prep school this year and will reopen his recruiting the following year. His hope is to go to a higher D-1 level. He would have started for Siena. It is my understanding that they have signed someone else but I don't recall his name. I know that he said on TV that he was attending Siena, but that is not the case anymore.
