Should college athletes get paid for playing?

G-League. Definitely better than the old NBADL.

I generally say no but if a player is one-n-done and an absolute superstar (say, Wiggins, Durant, etc.) who 100% for sure will not be using his scholarship...you're effectively FORCING them to play a year for free (and possibly get hurt) due to the NBA requiring the players be one year removed from HS. I say either let them play out of HS or let them make SOME money in college. Not saying it has to be 100k or something in the case of a superstar #1 pick like Durant, etc. but something extra.

NCAA and some schools are making a ton of money off some of these kids.

At UAlbany's level where we generally have kids who finish their senior year (whether they start here or elsewhere) they truly ARE getting a free education and our programs make little or even lose money so no...but then that becomes unfair that some players get paid and some don't....

I'm rambling...it's a tough line to figure out is what I'm trying to say...

No.....but, if you are going to say no, then college players should have unrestricted access to the US pro leagues. That perhaps would cause the NBA and NFL to start legit pro minor leagues in the US.

NBA had a really nice nbdl although it's fairly new...

Yes, that’s true. But I always thought basketball had more paths to make a living. There’s pro leagues all over the world where a HS player might develop or a marginal NBA player make a career. Other than a small and struggling arena football operation there’s not many places for a HS player to develop without going to college.

I think allowing professional athletes in the Olympics completely ruined the event. I fear paying college athletes would ruin that as well and add an element of sleaze that it doesn’t need. Small stipends based on financial need might be ok, but I don’t like larger payments. Is the star QB from a well-to-do family going to be willing to play for the same as a walk-on from a poor family?

I say absolutely no. Considering that scholarships cover tuition, fees, room, and board,

I believe the compensation is already substantial.

The idea of unrestricted access to the pro leagues is fair. When all is said and done, there's probably

no valid reason to force a young athlete to attend college in his path to an athletic career, or be one year removed

from high school. Even if restrictions remain in place, to pay the college athlete is not an alternative. It would destroy what makes

college athletics special.

As is, an athlete has other options in other leagues to pass the time. They don't need to attend college.

If they do, they get the free ride and the exposure. Lots of these athletes sole intention is using the college for their own advantage.

If the college makes money off of them, so be it.

Paying stipends... living expenses.... dividing it up equally among all sports... It's opening a can of worms that will

poison college athletics.

If it ever came down to paying college athletes, I would probably turn off college sports for good.

They just need to let them go pro whenever they want. Not every player wants to go to Lithuania or X country like the Balls or Brandon Jennings to bide his time for a year before coming out for the draft, in the case of basketball. Some kids want to be at least within a reasonable drive/flight of their parents, friends, etc. not an ocean away. International leagues aren't for everyone, just like college isn't for everyone.

Pro leagues just need to do a better job of educating rookies on the pitfalls of large sums of money right away. I know the NBA already has a rookie symposium where financial stuff is discussed but who knows how in depth it is.

If a kid goes to the NBA and becomes a bust, well that's too bad. The last pick in the 1st round of the NBA draft gets a 2yr deal worth $3.05M. With that amount of money, pending the kid isn't a total dumdum and blows it all (parents should help manage it!), he can go back to school and get a real education like the rest of us Joe Shmoe's (I graduated with my B.S. at age 29 and did 6 years of UAlbany night school while working so I'm sure a 20yr old NBA flame out can manage lol).

EDIT: As for the olympics...I don't understand the sentiment that allowing professional athletes somehow makes the olympics worse. Can someone explain their reasoning for this? Isn't the point of the olympics to put out the absolute best athlete in x sport from y country? If that's Lebron James and co...then it's Lebron James in co.

Anyone who complains about pros in the Olympics ruining the "purity" of amateur athletics should rewatch Chariots of Fire, paying attention to the scene about having a professional coach. "Amateurism's" all bs about the wealthy (who can practice all they want, and have personal servants help their training) proving their innate superiority to the commoners who have to work for a living.
