Man, River Rats and Firebirds. Talk about flashbacks. I remember hearing about "Touchdown Eddie Brown" at school as a youngster when everyone was wearing "Starter" jackets hah. Those were the days. I was in like 3rd grade.

Back in the day we were getting off a plane in Albany and noticed a tall guy ducking his head as he was walking. I realized it was Phil Jackson. Jackson, George Karl and others came through Albany with the Patroons in town. Anybody on this board live in the area in the late 60s and early 70s? Remember the Schaefer Brewers? They had other names too. Local semi pro basketball. Great players and great opponents.

Ahhh.. Remembering the Core 4 and more who all passed through here. I was one of the lucky ones to be in the house the night Ron Guidry came to Heritage Park as part of his rehab. That was the game when they roped off about the last 15 ft. of the outfield to allow standing room attendees in to see the game. And there was never a better spot to watch the Patroons and the very young Phil Jackson than the Armory.

Yes, I remember the Brewers playing a benefit game when the Amsterdam coach lost his family in a fire. They lost to a pickup team of college players; Todd Cetnar's father Rick, from Colgate, was one of them, another player brought his buddies from Duke.

Of course the brewery itself is long gone, after an epic fail of a demolition job (they set off the dynamite, the building dropped six feet but didn't collapse, and they had to take it apart by hand)

The T-U story was only on the last 25 years, or they could've added lots of old minor league baseball teams.

The great part with the Brewers was seeing current and future stars in a HS gym....would NEVER happen now. I saw one where they played a team of mostly Celtics players barnstorming to make some extra cash, Wayne Embry, Jo Jo White and Don Nelson among others. Then another game where they played a team of recent college grads. Artis Gilmore, Dean Meminger and Julius Erving among them! Pat Riley is of course from Schenectady and he had connections from the NBA, so I saw Elvin Hayes play with them. Plus some great local players like Schoff, Geiger and Barry Kramer. They played no defense at all so it was always something like 155-140 LOL. Can anyone imagine and BB players of this caliber doing it now?
