MBB Media Exposure

Recommended Posts

Has anyone with interaction with Will Brown or the Athletic department spoken with them about media exposure and availability. It seems that Siena gets most of the coverage in the local media and their games draw more fans even though they have a smaller student and alumni base and haven't been nearly as successful over the last few years? I think a lot of this is the amount of access Siena gives to press vs. what UA does.

Many of us are frothing at the mouth for more coverage. The TU college blog guys says it is because no one cares and Siena articles get more clicks (I stopped clicking on anything that has to do with Siena and click any Albany story from several devices hoping it might help lol)

Any thoughts? It appears that we will have a formidable team this year from what I have read, but there has been very little pre-season coverage to get the fans excited.

That's what happens when you have a horse guy covering college basketball and a company that doesn't care about the unprofessional attitudes he publicly shows for the teams they cover. I've talked personally to both the coach and Benson about it. I think all a coach can do is win. But Benson has a higher admin role and hopefully he will be able to do something but you can't force people to report on your team. If you can't get free press you just gotta pay for it, ie: advertisements which is what we have been seeing more of in the first few months of Benson being here. More billboards, more advertisements on the TU website. It's a start. Gotta get our own media department to be on top of things. So many competing priorities with so little money...gonna take time.

When Singelais said that UA didn't give enough access to the coach and athletes, I should've listed some of the articles from One Bid Wonders and NY Buckets, and asked how the volunteer bloggers got these stories but the "professionals" from the local paper couldn't.

As for winning, to paraphrase, if a championship happens and the local paper doesn't report on it, does it make a sound to the general public? Especially if, though they say they give good coverage during the tournament, you have to start over from scratch the next season?

Winning does cure all, very true - but back to back tournament appearances with a win sounds like winning to me.

Mark told me on that site that there was no interest in UA so they don't report. Siena fans mock the attendance. Siena releases a video highlight reel of every game that the Times Useless posts on the blog. They seem to be a much more media friendly school.

To me its the old chicken or egg scenario. Get the press to report and push it and the fans and interest will follow.

Thanks for the answers btw. I have been reading the site for years, but finally registered and just got validated.

Welcome...! As for the TU, it is what it is...has been that way forever. Tim Wilkins is a flat out deadbeat...never seen a guy with worse job performance than him. No blog entries, hardly any stories, a complete joke. I've stopped visiting their blogs, I'll go once every few weeks to look what's new but otherwise...whatever!

You have to understand their readership, which is mostly old adults. The newspaper industry is in a death spiral. UA represents the new order in the Capital District, and young people and young families don't read newspapers. Siena fans are old farts and/or alums. Let them have the TU

This is true, although I rather enjoy reading the paper and I'm in my late 20's, I just don't usually get the chance to because I'm usually not hanging out at the local diner or deli in the morning for a breakfast sandwich and coffee lol. When I was in middle school, I used to always read the paper on the daily (sports and local news). But that was before the invention of the smart phone and internet everywhere (can you believe that? I'm only 27 and I remember a time before technology lol). When I'm flying I tend to grab it.

If that is Mark S you are talking about he is a piece of $iena. For such a bad reporter he certainly has a high opinion of the job he does ;) It is a job of newspapers to cover newsworthy stories (and for the most part they do a subpar job at that) and shortly after he wrote no one cares about Albany basketball he put something up on $iena soccer like they have a following at all. Even if that was newsworthy it just went and showed what a clown he really is with the excuse he gave about the blog not covering the areas best basketball team.

Bottom line is the TU coverage has been horrendous for many years and they are just using that as a nonsense reason . Other media outlets cover Albany better than the TU and those should be supported. There is now a football show on TV each week and coach Brown has been on the radio in the past.

Very easy to support the good media outlets and leave the TU to the dinosaurs that follow LCC basketball.

No one reads newspapers anymore anyway. Siena has been D1 for so long so it's understandable they have a larger fan base for basketball. The question I have is are the siena bball fans going to UA football games? Haven't been to the new stadium, but UA is the only d1 football team in the area.
