Aronhalt goes for 26 and 10 in his final home game. Blue Devils go out with a bang

From reading these stories this year it doesn't sound like he ever lays the ball up when he's near the hoop does it?

Blue Devils go out with bang on Senior Night

By SAM BLACKBURN

Staff Writer

ZANESVILLE - It was only fitting that the final game for Zanesville's seniors at Winland Memorial Gymnasium was one dominated by the things they do best - defending, running and dunking.

And those most responsible all season, seniors Logan Aronhalt and Andre Harris, again did most of the damage.

Aronhalt and Harris had four dunks between them and combined for 50 points in just more than three quarters, as the Blue Devils' six seniors went out in style in a 95-50 win over Portsmouth in the Southeast Ohio Athletic League Friday night.

"We just wanted to go out with a bang and leave it all out there," Aronhalt said. "There was a lot of emotion."

Aronhalt scored a game-high 26 points with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Harris added 24 and Cedric Harris 17 with a career-high 12 assists.

All were products of an uptempo game and several highlight-reel plays - the game started with an alley-oop dunk from Aronhalt - that had everyone smiling during an autograph session with fans afterward.

Zanesville used an 8-0 run to start the third quarter to push a 16-point halftime lead to 49-25.

It got even worse after an 18-2 run, kickstarted by Andre Harris' flying left-handed dunk off a fast break, made it 70-33 with two minutes left in the quarter.

After making only 2 of 9 first-half 3-point attempts, the Blue Devils hit their first four attempts of the second half - three from Aronhalt.

Coupled with a defense that never let the Trojans (8-10) settle into an offensive flow - they had 12 first-half turnovers - Zanesville was able to exhibit its strength.

"The thing I was most happy about, is that we got all of those early baskets in the second half within the framework of our offense," Zanesville coach Scott Aronhalt said.

Zanesville (16-2), which never trailed, overcame 38 percent shooting in the first half by dominating the offensive glass and forcing 17 turnovers.

Zanesville held a 44-24 edge in rebounding in all, including a 20-rebound showing on the offensive end.

And it was the 6-5 Andre Harris causing the most damage.

"It seemed like the only thing that kept us in the game in the first half was Andre's rebounding," Logan Aronhalt said.

Shane Centers added seven points and Lucas Graham six, while Bryson Gillard - in his first game back after a broken arm suffered five games ago - hit a pair of mid-range jumpers with his off-hand.

"It was a morale builder," Gillard joked afterward.

Andrew Bendolph's 16 points and Nate Codogan's 13 led the Trojans, who played without top scorer Anthony Williams.

Zanesville's reserves won 66-32 behind Kurt Young's 14 points and 10 each from Michael Lynn and Allen Harris.

It seems Logan is another pretty good guy recruited to UA

Aronhalt, a leader on and off the court

It seems like every day one of our area youth is achieving an accomplishment that not only serves as a distinction for themselves, but gives us all a sense of pride in the community.

Logan Aronhalt, the 6-4 senior for the Zanesville Blue Devils, is one of those youths.

He has proven himself on the court leading the Blue Devils, who are currently ranked 10th in Division I. He is averaging 22.9 points and 5.9 rebounds. He was Division II Eastern District Player of Year and a first-team All-Ohioan last year.

And last week he was recognized outside our boundaries as he was one of 1,500 players from around the country to be nominated for the McDonald's All-American Team. He was picked by a selection committee made up of 32 prominent basketball experts that included nationally-renowned coaches and high school sports journalist.

While he may not be chosen for the team being nominated says a lot about the caliber of player he is.

Earlier this month Aronhalt's 24 points against Warren Local gave him 1,372 points for his career, surpassing Blue Devil great Seth Martin's previous school record of 1,371 points, set in 1997.

But even with the accolades and records he has amassed what may be most important is the way this young man carries himself.

Talk to those who know him and they will tell you what kind of guy he is. When someone wants to credit him he quickly points out the other four guys on the court with him. He'll tell you about Cedric and Andre Harris and their scoring abilities or how he wouldn't have scored his points if it weren't for the likes of Brandon Mills or Joe Prati.

Aronhalt will talk to you about practicing hard and working hard to reach your goals. He has a lot to take pride in, but he is humble in his acceptance of the awards and accomplishments.

When Zanesville's tournament run is over this year - no matter how far they go -Aronhalt will look ahead to his next chapter in life - attending the State University at Albany, N.Y.

The Division I university will be lucky to have him and back here in Zanesville we can all take pride in him and how he represents us.

Zanesville wins SEOAL title in 68-63 win

CHILLICOTHE — Zanesville has beaten Chillicothe 68-63 at Hatton Gymnasium to earn the Southeast Ohio Athletic League title tonight.

The Blue Devils had previously lost three consecutive games to Chillicothe, including a 59-58 decision at Winland Memorial Gymnasium earlier this season.

Logan Aronhalt's 22 points, which broke the school's all-time career record, led the Blue Devils. Andre Harris added 19, including a 14-point showing in the first half.

Anthony Hitchens' game-high 34 points led the Cavs, who trailed by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter before pulling within five in the final minute.

"What a great win for our kids," Zanesville coach Scott Aronhalt said. "They believed in what they were doing out there. We did some great things tonight ... This was a great team win."

Zanesville capped an 18-2 regular season and plays either Columbus St. Charles or Columbus Walnut Ridge in the Division I sectional tournament next Friday at New Albany High School.

The Cavs also finished 18-2 and also begin tournament play next week.

Also of note, in the injury notes:

While Logan Aronhalt is still nursing a hip flexor, as well as a case of the flu, Andre Harris has what Aronhalt described as a crack in his right thumb.

More games on the horizon for Logan

Postseason appearances

Several Blue Devils will take part in postseason basketball events, including Logan Aronhalt, Cedric Harris and Joey Prati's trip to Italy later this month............

Logan has been tapped for the Ohio-Kentucky game to be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at Thomas More College and in the Ohio North-South All-Star game Sunday, April 20 at Capital University.

Logan and Cedric are also expected to make a return trip to Italy April 25. - Zanesville Times Recorder

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess Logan is Will Brown's type of guy.

Scott Aronhalt (Logan's dad) Zanesville's Coach about next year's prospects for Zanesville....

"Just like I said before, there will be the pleasant surprises, and those who just don't get it done," Aronhalt explained. "It will be interesting to see how these guys compete. But you'll see guys start to separate themselves starting next week. There will be the guys who are like Logan and Cedric were, wanting to be in the gym all of the time, in the weight room. There's some talent there. We could have a really solid basketball team if they put the work into it."

Barring some MAJOR developments, except early play from RAFFA and Aronholt. Both fill needs we have- A Lillis type player and a creator/scorer. That would be Aronholt and Raffa respectively.

Lindfors will need some time. I hope to g-d Coach Brown is on the phone with Jake and our strength coach giving him a program from now until the fall. He needs to toss on about 15-20lbs to be successful this season...and about 30 for him to break out in his career over four years.

Skilled and smart- CHECK

Size-- Check for height....To be continued in the weight dept.
