Advice On Mobile Hotspots

Anyone use your cellphone mobile hotspot to connect your laptop to the internet?

Wondering how well it works.

Also, some of you use your phone to stream games to your tvs...

What are the best ways to do that?

I know of the chromecast device, what are other ways of doing this?

I've used hotspot before...it works fine as long as you have a good 4G/LTE signal. It's 'technically' much like any WiFi network you'd encounter elsewhere with your laptop...

Chromecast is the best way, IMO, but if you own a Samsung phone and a modern Samsung TV, you can use "SmartView" which is much the same. I tried to stream from my Pixel XL (Google) to my new Samsung TV BEFORE getting a Chromecast via "SmartView" and it didn't work...but I love my newly acquired Chromecasts.

If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask.

I use my phone as a hotspot all the time. For work when I'm on a train or even in my car (while parked of course) since I travel for work. It works great. I also turn it on for long car rides so my kids can watch their ipads since they are wifi only.

I use chromecast. I much older one to stream from my phone to my TV and it works. Actually phone works better than my laptop. The new chromecast is pretty cheap.

Mobile Hot-spot from a phone works great unless you are using an application that is packet heavy like a VPN or VOIP.

Streaming video, normal facebook, email, etc all work great as long as you have a strong signal in your location.

As far as streaming to your TV: Chromecast is the best. You can buy the 1080p version for $30. Works perfectly for the watch ESPN app

Yep, I just invested in a Chromecast Ultra (nothing we stream sports wise is 4k but I futureproofed there a bit) and a regular Chromecast. Honestly, being a techy, I didn't understand the need for it (I had a pretty old TV and used my PC for 99% of my media viewing) but after buying a new TV it's probably one of the best 'gadget' purchases I've made in a few years. Highly recommend it.

I'll second that. I had 3 Smart LCD TV's in my house. Each of them already had WiFi built in for streaming things like Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc. so I never saw the value in Chromecast or AppleTV. I bought 43" Flat TV off craigslist for my garage ma'hal (LOL) and it didn't have streaming. I bought a Chromecast for it, and I was amazed. There is so much more you can stream. From videos you took yourself on your phone and camera roll, to almost anything that can be viewed in your browser.

I ended up buying another chromecast for my main living room TV even though it already had internet built in!

lol @ Garage Ma'hal. I dig it.

If you have a Google phone such as the Pixels (at least I think so), you can cast your ENTIRE phone. 1:1, anything you do on your phone is shown on the screen...so you can view instagram, snapchat, facebook, your banking app, etc. on the big screen lol.

For sports people like ourselves, would you guys recommend the Chromecast Ultra over the Amazon Firestick (I have Amazon Prime, so the latter seems appealing, but the techies on this forum really know their stuff)?

As far as I know it's much much harder to 'cast' to the fire stick so if your plan is to cast stuff from your phone or computer (Chrome browser has built in casting abilities), your best bet is a Chromecast.
