1. I last saw Hofstra in the NCAA's as the America East champion in Buffalo the same day Bobby Knight coached his last game for Indiana and I am curious to see how they are now in person. Hey - I was in Buffalo that day as well. As well as the last time the first round was there...and they still didn't get the between game feeding of the crowd right. Think they'll get it this season?
2. ..maybe one day Ettkin could add "getting bombed at the lamp post" to his list of college football "traditions." I've eaten about 1000 chili-cheese dogs at The Varsity in Athens during my time. The place is disgusting. Ask anyone who has actually eaten at The Varsity and they'll tell you the same thing. I'd much rather go to ATS pub. Go Dawgs-- of Georgia...and Albany! 15853 It's interesting, I was saying pretty much the same thing yesterday on the other thread. 15856 Ever wonder if these guys read the forum?
3. Getting up to speed here: I know that the Giants use the campus for summer practice/camp. Did no one work a field/stadium improvement into that contract?
4. Do the students have university wide email for receiving messages from the administration etc?
5. We should just accept that college football is a southern thing, I'm not sure that ND, Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin, Ohio State..... would agree with that! And then there's USC, Stanford, Arizona.... Having been a college football fan since childhood...saw Ernie Davis play during Syracuse's last championship season in 1959...there is a great divide between watching football at the top level...like the schools you think of in the south, and the one's mentioned above. D1 and scholarships don't create an exciting game. Football can be cold, wet, snowy, and very boring. In a small size stadium (I have been to Marist...you can't see plays develop due to lack of seating height). Even at ND...up high, you can see the plays, but if the windchill makes it -10, who cares! So it has to be a great program to bring the people in. Three hours in the autumn cold of Albany...well, it will be hard to bring them in. You also need tv exposure once or twice a year...so people can get to know their teams...there isn't the exposure for the smaller teams like there is for Basketball...you can do two basketball games in the time of 1 football...so you're exposure factor is cut in half.
6. Hmm, we might want to double check the banner in the RACC for Doc. Apparently he was actually from Georgia, coaching at "Albany State," instead of here at UA. ! 15782 AHHH...but in the days of Doc coaching, it was Albany State...I have pictures of fellow classmates in tee shirts and sweatshirts to prove it! So if they checked a bio, that's probably what it said. And what does Seton Hall know about our humble alma mater?
7. That was an interesting trip back to the 60's and 70's. Unfortunately, no pictures of women's swimmming...I was on the first team that the old SUNYA had...and was the first woman to win the outstanding sportswoman award...the first time there was recognition of a woman by the athletic dept for that type of award. I did recognize many of the women in the women's basketball pictures from the 68-69 to 69-70 years. That was a long time ago!
8. Even from a distance, it was easy to see the impact President Hall had on the University. His decision to wave an inaugeral celebration to use the funds for the students, his honor program - impressed me beyond easy words. The university community was truly blessed to have this man among them, and at its head, no longer how short his tenure. His influence will be felt for many years, and hopefully, with the efforts of the students influenced by him, over many other institutions and areas. Deepest sympathies to his family, to those who knew him, and the students he has taught. Edit: Will try to note 3 p.m. today, and take a few minutes to reflect at the same time as the ceremony at the fountain.
9. Cool that the site also likes our school nickname. It also doesn't hurt that we're the only ones in the country with the name. Nice way to maintain name recognition. 14962 But I'm not sure we want them to know about Minerva.
10. Don't be going on about the ND program for coaching credentials, unless you're talking fencing, women's soccer and maybe baseball. Their basketball program (well the women did win a few years back) their men's program is another program with lots of potential that frequently snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. And I can say that because we bleed Notre Dame blue and gold in this house...they break my heart year after year...and we're not even talking football here! Notre Dame, like UALbany, almost beat one of the top programs - 2004?5? Big Dance when they came a hair's breath from beating Duke.
11. I think they can squeeze more people in with benches than with seats with backs. Might be the factor as well as cost. More dollars in with fewer out.
12. As someone who used to visit the Siena board as the fan of a MAAC school...I was amazed at the vitriolic posts aimed at that and other MAAC schools. Then I went to the MAAC tournament and sat in front of their section, including directly in front of some adult, (older adult, members of their community, including board members. Just let me say, that the apples don't far fall from the trees. There were children with them...yet the language that spilled from their maws in front to of those kids...trashy and obscene! When I said something, pointing at the kids...the language then was turned toward me rather than at the officials. So at least I lifted the burden from the zebras...who really were clueless...but Siena was winning...and getting almost all the calls. The only ones against them were legitimate. Siena fans are a breed apart. Nothing surprises me. I read their board to laugh at their narrowmindedness. There are no true sports fans there.
13. Since my main NCAA baseball team isn't in the conference tournament...will turn my eyes to Albany. You guys are getting me involved here. Thanks!
14. Sounds like car wash time...a lot of HS activities in this area make money that way...everyone needs their cars washed now and then. A lot of other money making activites require that the folks contributing care about the sport or activity before they fork over bucks...but this is usually a spontaneous reaction kind of thing. Usually charge $5-10 around here. Usually the team can find a gas station willing to let them use the space. One HS here, however, uses the school bus company space on a Sat or Sun. But is at a main intersection, neat a busy local shopping center.
