UALBANY'S JAMAR WILSON NAMED AMERICA EAST PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Brent Wilson and Kirsten Zoellner Also Named to All-America East Squad
Boston, Mass. - University at Albany's Jamar Wilson has been named the 2006 America East Conference Player of the Year as announced on Friday, March 3 by the conference office. Wilson was chosen to the first team, while Brent Wilson and Kirsten Zoellner were selected to the third team in voting by the league's head coaches.
Wilson, who earned All-America East recognition for the third time, became just the fifth player in conference history to receive the league's top player and rookie award during a career. Reggie Lewis (Northeastern), Taylor Coppenrath (Vermont), T.J. Sorrentine (Vermont) and Tunji Awojobi (Boston University) also accomplished that feat.
Wilson, a 6-foot-1 junior from Bronx, N.Y., is second in the conference in scoring at 17.6 points per game, plus averages 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals. He has scored 20 or more points on 13 occasions this season, including 30 against Maine on Feb. 11. Wilson, the first player in school history to combine for more than 1,400 career points and 300 assists, was recently named to the NABC All-District II second team.
Brent Wilson, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, averaged 10.4 points and 4.6 rebounds in his first season as a starter. A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he scored in double figures 16 times, including a career-high 19 against Oakland. Wilson, who ranked seventh among the conference leaders with 52 three-point field goals, was a member of the 2005 America East all-rookie squad.
Kirsten Zoellner, a 7-foot-1 senior from Hannover, Germany, averaged 7.6 points, plus was third among the America East leaders in blocked shots (1.32 pg) and 11th in rebounding (5.2 pg). Zoellner, who led the team in field goal percentage (.568), transferred from Boston College prior to the 2004-05 campaign. He grabbed 10-plus rebounds three times this year.
