GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will allow archers to hunt deer on campus in an effort to control what school officials say is a growing nuisance deer population.
The hunters will have to follow certain requirements, including shooting from stands at least 12 feet off the ground and remaining at least 100 yards from specific trails.
The campus will still be safe even with the hunters there, said Dean Rodeheaver, the school's assistant chancellor for planning and budget.
``If we had any doubt, we wouldn't be doing it,'' Rodeheaver said. ``We don't have concerns about safety.''
About 40 to 50 deer roam campus, about twice the preferred number, said Bob Howe, director of the school's Cofrin Center for Biodiversity.
The increasing number of deer wreak havoc on vegetation, contribute to car-deer crashes and raise the risk of an increased prevalence of Lyme disease, Howe said.
