This is my adopted country but today let us all rejoice in what an awesome country it is.

Happy birthday America, you've given much to many, even those who came with nothing.

#98510 @ Stony Brook - AE Tourney Round 2 - 3/6 - 7:30PM

Posted by olddog71 on 06 March 2017 - 10:33 PM

The following excerpt is from the Long Island Newsday on tonight's game: "Consider this the official rite of passage for all of Stony Brook’s new players and coaching staff. You’re not really one of the Seawolves until Albany breaks your heart, or at least your stride."

I love it!

Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that **North Carolina** is travelling to UAlbany to play in the first round of an NCAA tournament??!! If you told me this 20 years ago (when I graduated) I would have thought you were out of your g-damn mind.

Interesting that "not listening to the message boards" was mentioned.

David, if you do ever read this, please stop. Don't mind us armchair quarterbacks. Listen to your coaches, your teammates, and yourself. As Brown stated, the team doesn't get where it did without you. Us fans care about the team and you. All of us have opinions that aren't worth squat.

Keep on being the man. We can't wait to see you continue to improve and continue to be the man!

I have so much UA crap it's unbelievable. Just in flags I have 3x5 horizontal and vertical. I also have multiple garden flags.

Amazon, Football Fanatics and the UA bookstore all sell them.

I'm screwed if UA ever changes their name. Christmas ornaments, corn hole games, scarves, Fatheads, car plates and hundreds of other items get tossed. I had my eye on a UA chef apron. I'm determined to keep up with my Michigan and Michigan State neighbors.

#95812 Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Posted by haggyland on 24 November 2016 - 10:48 AM

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and your families.

I have had the honor of watching my alma mater succeed in unimaginable ways over the years at the D1 level, and I am pleased that I have been able to share a lot of it with many of you.  Sure there have been disagreements over the years but if we are going to be a part of what has been termed "The Big Purple Family" then internal squabbles should be expected...on my end I will just try to be less of the crazy uncle!

So, safe travels if you are travelling, best wishes to all, and on Sunday let's finish off this extended holiday weekend with two wins against the other D1 team in town.

Go Great Danes!

...and now on to the festivities!

We have to beat Vermont next year. Absolutely at any cost.
Will Brown's clock has reached midnight. He is now merely mortal.

what?

The carriage has turned into a pumpkin. This loss is as bad as UVA in 2007.

Huh? Against a 28-5 team, riding a 20 game win streak, 16-0 in the conference, 9pt road dogs...and they get to the last minute before losing. That's what qualifies as a bad loss?... I'll take this one any day over the home tourney hairball they coughed up against Hartford last year.

#101519 Title IX violations

Posted by kikuria on 19 September 2017 - 12:09 PM

Th above is likely on the money.

And I will echo others who said that Title IX wasn't ever supposed to be athletics. However, I don't mind its application so long as they make the correct decision that is long over-due: exempt football from the process.   It's just never going to be an apples-to-apples comparison.  They should add dance teams and cheerleading to the application as well, not because it is a weasel way to achieve compliance but because those teams work hard and practice hard for a sporting related on-campus activity.

Also, i think someone else may have mentioned this...but Title IX is NOT solely about scholarship-scholarship. It's about facilities, expenditures, and access as well.  In my opinion, and this all depends on cash...once the decision is made to go all-in on the SEFCU renovation (and after both teams use the Old Gym--presumably during the re-build)...we renovate the old gym and we make that a volleyball centric facility dedicated to that team.  Also, renovate the old pool and bring back swimming and diving...which would allow more scholarship opportunities and, if its a woman only sport (meaning don't bring back men's swimming) then that facility would be dedicated to the ladies, helping reach the goal.

Another easy (but more expensive way to do this) is elevating women's crew.  The expensive part is the shells which, from my understanding, can be upwards of 50-75k per boat.

I'm normally just an observer but this is a topic I actually know something about.

The issue according to the findings it about proportional opportunities. But the languate used in the resolution agreement made it clear that OCR didn't want to see UAlbany eliminating opportunities for men.

With that as background, the only way to meaningful resolve this is Crew.  There's no other sport that can close that gap. 100+ D1 schools figured this out long ago - if you want anything that resembles "real" D1 football, you had better plan on having Crew.

Other background information - I speak to this as a former rower, someone currently coaching the sport, and a former collegiate coach (different college folks.)

Dane96 - I understand why you cite those numbers. It's such a common misconception that it's become fact. Seriously, you could fleet out an entire program for those kinds of numbers.

It's simple not true that the start up costs for Crew are as big as people let on. And ongoing costs are in line with cross country - you know, those budget killing runners are always sucking up resources.

When people cite cost as a barrier, they're inflating the prices because they are trying to kill the idea or otherwise don't find it appealing.  When someone thinks it's a good idea, they talk about creative ways to bring that idea to fruition.  Both have to address the financial piece but arrive at different outcomes because of different starting points.

Dane96 - The only programs that I know that have EVER spent that kind of $$$ for a start up program were in the Big 12 and had to have immediate offsets due to football. But even they weren't spending $50k+ on a boat.

If the school wanted Crew they could start it for well under under $20k.

Every D1 program in our region (D2 and D3 for that matter) spread start up capital expenses over multiple years and then made incremental improvements (e.g. Buy or rent relatively inexpensive, used pieces of equipment; build roster numbers; sell said equipment and roll $$ into an upgrade;  repeat as needed and add donor $$$ as desired.)

Want to make sure it's a success and lower the costs even further? Work with the students and the club where those students currently row (not affiliated with university.)

It's a small community so I just took the liberty of reaching out to get info from the coach that runs the program  (I didn't mention this post but probably should have in retrospect.) They had  more than 100+ women interested this season but had to limit it to 40 students because of staff size. And that's with ZERO off-campus recruiting.

I have to image that members of the Athletic Department read this stuff.  So let me conclude by saying:

UAlbany Athletic Department - You truly have a plug and play solution that would quickly solve the current Title IX issue.  If you are willing to make it work that is.  I'd even be willing to facilitate making the connection although I'm sure you can figure out how to get in contact with the right people.  Private message me if that's an option.

#97244 Coach Brown

Posted by Clickclack on 30 January 2017 - 01:32 PM

I was reading through the 2016 recruiting thread because I was VERY bored just to see who actually came & what everyone was saying about all of the recruits & possible recruits. I came out thinking some people seem to doubt Coach Brown quite a bit. I graduated in 2004 & my friends at UA used to make fun of me for following the team. I used to say "we are going to see UA on the March Madness bracket one day" & my UA friends abused me! I remember cheering when they cut the lead to under THIRTY vs Syracuse at the Pepsi Arena. Do some of you guys realize that Brown inherited a fledgling brand new D1 team that once finished a game with four players!! Has been to FIVE NCAAs!! If this year is a "down" year I'll sign up for that anytime! Nichols & Cremo only SOPHOMORES!

My point is I think some people should trust Coach Brown a little bit more! He's done an absolutely positively INCREDIBLE job from the hand he was given!

Just my 2 cents. Don't post often but read the board quite a bit & enjoy reading all who participate. Let's hope a usual Coach Brown better as the season goes along team just taking a little bit longer than usual this year haha. Go Great Danes!!

I reserve the right to light myself on fire as a paying fan...and if an AD ever listens to what I (totting around a can of gasoline) have to say about keeping or firing a coach...well that's on them!

#96047 Albany (3-2) - Albany Cup 2016 - Sun 11/27 @ 7PM

Posted by S-money on 29 November 2016 - 04:26 PM

LOL @ the bolded text.

We don't have pressure? We STILL don't belong after owning them in BB for 5 of the last 7 years and being 1000x better in all other sports? We wish we were them?

WE ARE THEM. They are the step child now lol. As for as Albany, NY sports go...the team with "Albany" in their actual name is the king of the castle.

HJ, along with OldDave, are some of the most hilarious posters on that board. Tools to the max.

I have never once, EVER, wished our program was like Siena's.  Just a dumb statement.  He is right about a couple things though.  They are 6 games into the season and banged up.  Their fans need to relax.

I only wished we played in a big arena as I'm a sucker for the environment (the NBA is my first sports love). That is all. But, I'd rather play in a 4,000 seat facility at 75% capacity that, according to people like HJ, is '$iena' than play in a 15k arena like the TUC with 75% of it empty or bagged up.

I love our 4,500 seat gym that rocks at even 75% capacity and has the darkest men's room in the America East

I love our long tenured coach who is likely to stay and win hundreds of games for UA

I love our large school with a concrete campus that will endure rather than eventually be threatened with closing down due to decreasing enrollment

I love our mostly good natured fans that keep it real

Would I like to win a round of 64 game or more someday? Sure, but I like where we are and where we're hopefully headed.

Posted by GreatDanes06 on 27 November 2016 - 09:36 PM

Honestly...I think Siena is just straight out bitter. I think they are upset that UAlbany has built a bigger and better modern program all-around and they did it pretty quick. They are upset they aren't the only draw in town anymore. It's wanting to grasp with straws. Like we have all said, if they wanna bitch and cry, drop their asses (and not just in basketball, all the sports). Not worth the time if you ask me. They wanna schedule St. Rose every year and play in the TUC and call it the crosstown rivalry, by all means.

PSU to run a press on defense...from my vantage point this has caused UA troubles over the years.

Hmmm...the "Canadian-based NCAA college basketball website". I'll take the good pub though!

#92518 Season ticket renewals.

Posted by alumni '92' on 27 May 2016 - 12:22 AM

Quote

My biggest concern is what impact this will have on attendance. If we are selling out, great, it makes sense to do. To raise ticket prices by double digit % when you have one sellout a year (BPG) is ridiculous. Plenty of games where you have less than 50% capacity. So now lets charge more...that will get people to show up.  - Clickclack

Agreed ... I hate to speak in any negative manner about the program/administration (and I am sure that fans of LCC will have a field day reading our posts), but Clickclack hits the nail on the head ... We are not even close to filling that arena on regular basis ... Does the administration expect an increase in attendance/season ticket sales with such a bump in prices? ... We are not there yet ... deja vu: I think back to the first year that they charged for parking in the SEFCU lot - average (real) attendance was about 600 - and they decided to charge for parking ... really? (yes, I know that we had a different AD at the time)

Quote

What they are doing IMO is on the backs of the small season ticket base trying to grow the financial base and in the process filet the few folks who religiously follow the program.  - Clickclack

Agreed x2 ... There is a solid core who have been coming to games, every night, for years/decades (and a number for fewer years, but also, there every night) ... often joke about how during the early years of DI everyone knew each other on a first name basis, because there were only a few hundred people in the building ... wife and I would pull into the parking lot saying, "Lets hope they keep it close" ... won't mention the member of the athletic dept. who stopped down during a women's game, many years back, to hand us a gift and thank us for coming out every night when the women were not competitive and there were about two hundred fans in attendance

QuoteIt's the principle of the points that Click posted. It's just hard to justify given the lack of information. If I knew what I was throwing money at, it would be a different story.  – Eli

Eli gets it, bingo ... I am all about growing the program ... understand the need for revenue ... supportive ... but, to just have a significant increase thrown upon the loyal base without any clear public plan about where the revenue is headed (goals, projects, etc.), is disappointing

attended games as an undergraduate ... was present at games (no season tickets) in the years following graduation (Class of '93 ... medical leave senior year, otherwise Class of '92), would have purchased season tickets at the time, but there was no need ... few in attendance ... purchased season tickets for the first time in '02-'03 ... believe that it was '03-'04 when they put the courtside seats in, so I purchased 6 (just the wife and I), expecting that the program would grow, that it would be a nice vantage point, and that the program could use the $ ... flash forward ... still have those 6 ... paid $1800 for the men, plus $600 for the women last season (plus, four season tickets for football ... don't have lacrosse season tickets, but at just about every home game $) ... wife and I did not need six on our own, but for the past 13 years we have tried to bring neighbors, co-workers, family, friends, and even a few strangers who would not otherwise come out to UA games ... guarantee that I market the program in the community as much as anyone: alums, fans, UA employees ... so it caught me by surprise that our seats for the men went from $1800 to $3300 (still waiting on the new price for the women ... comparable increase? ... we'll find out soon) ... again, I know the value of the product has grown and that the administration - in a perfect world for them - would reclaim the seats that we sit in and distribute them to new corporate donors (but it does cause me to ask, where were those folks when the only people in the arena were players, coaches, referees,  medics, support staff and a few hundred fans?) ... love the phone calls that I have received in the past week from a few close season ticket holders ... similarly dismayed

Quote

We are still half the price of LCC. - godanesgo99

We don't play in a comparable arena ... we don't (yet) draw their numbers ... and we have not been 'in the game' as long

Quote

It's a sad state of affairs when there is this much complaining over a couple of bucks a game per seat. Is the economy that bad? Are UA fans really that poor? - godanesgo99

no, not too poor ... just significantly disappointed by the process ... thought we deserved a better approach ... maybe I expected too much

#91514 Coach Abe with the Vote of Confidence

Posted by Oldtimer on 21 March 2016 - 05:51 PM

YES, the Wisconsin coach made $300,000 but is now without a job.  That is the life of big conference basketball.  Coach Abe deserves a raise, I would suggest something similar to Coach Brown and don't forget the pressure is a little less and the NYS pension is huge.  Great season, I wish I was young enough to hug all those ladies but I would probably get arrested.

From the Delaware fan forum….gotta give them credit for this one because we could have used this before last week…LOL.

Delaware Blue Hens football practice was delayed nearly two hours this past Tuesday after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the field.

Coach Dave Brock immediately suspended practice while police and federal investigators were called to investigate.

After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white substance, unknown to the players, was the goal line.

Practice was resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again."
