2nd Basketball Scrimmage

Some stuff from the post:

-Army or Colgate seem most likely, with an outside chance it’s Bucknell or Lafayette. Holy Cross has an exhibition game tonight, Lehigh is a regular-season opponent of UAlbany, and Navy and American seem a little far to go for a scrimmage

-Freshman point guard Anthony Raffa will play for UAlbany after missing the Long Island scrimmage with a sprained ankle. He’ll help out junior point guard Mike Johnson, who struggled last Saturday.

-“I’d like our point guard play to be better,” Brown said. “Mike Johnson has a lot of ability, but he was very passive in the LIU scrimmage. (Sophomore) Louis Barraza played at backup point guard and he scored the ball very, very well. He was probably our leading scorer in the scrimmage, but he’s not a point guard … Having Raffa back with his energy and intensity on the floor will help us as well.”

-Brown said he’ll give 10 to 12 players substantial minutes in the scrimmage, which will consist of three 20-minute halves. He said he still hasn’t settled on a starting five or a rotation.

-Freshman guard Logan Aronhalt is the only Great Dane who won’t be avaiable on Saturday as he continues to recover from a fractured foot. Brown said Aronhalt has begun doing some stationary shooting on the side at practices under the supervision of trainer Jay Geiger.

-Brown said junior forward Will Harris, the Virginia transfer, is at “80 percent” conditioning. That’s an improvement from 50 percent two weeks ago.

I think from what has been reported by Singelais we can begin to get an idea of who is going to be in the starting lineup and in the rotation.

My guess and just to make it clear I'm going off of Mark here,

Starters

1. Johnson

2. Barraza

3. Harris

4. Connelly

5. Covington

Bench/Rotation

1. Raffa

2. Ambrose

3. Allen

4. Hastings

5. Gifford

Reserves

1. McRae

2. Lindfors

3. Aronhalt

I think our starting rotatin will vary considerably throughout the year, depending on who we play and what that team's style is. Moreover, as far as I'm concerned, the starting rotation is only relevant for the purpose of player introductions and about the first 90-120 seconds of the game! I've always liked how Coach uses lots of players and uses those players according to the flow of the game. I trust he will continue that style this year.

But, for the sake of making uninformed projections, here goes, and I haven't even seen any of the new players yet, so I know nothing:

Starters:

1. Johnson/Raffa/Barazza

2. Barazza / Allen / Ambrose (But, I think our SG position will see a variety of players this year and starters. It depends on who the opponent is. As for a team like Siena who will pressure the ball and try to pick up the pace of the game, look to Raffa and/or Ambrose here for sure. When we play Siena, I would have to think we're going to get to see Raffa and Johnson let loose to do their things in the backcourt. Should be exciting to watch! I had a vision today that on December 6, Johnson plays shut-down defense on Kenny H., and Raffa runs up and down the court, and all around, their ball-pressure defense. And Ambrose simply jumped over their defense (he could also probably go right through it if he wanted to), after getting the go-ahead from air traffic control at Albany International Airport to take off.). :)

3. Harris / Hastings / Logan / Allen / McRae

4. Connelly / Harris / Hastings(?) / Lindfors / McRae

5. Convington / McRae / Gifford / Lindfors (But I wouldn't be suprised if I saw Connelly here at the "5" to stretch out some defenses like Boston University. When we played BU in the semifinals two years ago at the AE Tourney in Boston, I thought our offense ran at its best with Brian C. andn Convington coming out top and stretching the defense. I am excited to see Lindfors coming in and perhaps starting at the 5 this season (or at the 4, with Connelly at the 5) to really stretch some defenses out.

Okay, I give up. After trying to do a starting 5, I realize that it's impossible!! But this is a good thing. I think Coach has assembled a team with players who can play multiple positions and serve different roles depending on the moment and opponent.

About all I know is that we can expect to see off the bat lots of Harris, Johnson, Raffa, Connelly, and that's about all I'm good for!

I remember a few years ago when Coach Brown did not use a lot of players. First, he did not have all that many reliable players to use. Second, perhaps using a variety of players did not fit into his scheme of being successful. Third, perhaps it wasnt't his general strategy to use a larger number of players. For whatever reason, I'm glad he is using many more players in recent years. It just shows how the program has progressed, and perhaps how Coach Brown has matured.

From what I've been able to glean reading etc......If I was to take an uneducated guess I'd put the starting lineup as follows.

Starters

- Mike

- Timmy

- Will

- Brian

- Brett

Bench

- Anthony (no reason to rush him what so ever, let the junior start and then give this kid a ton of minutes. He'll be called on soon enough to start. Plus he missed some time because of his ankle)

- Jerel (Senior, gonna have his chances to play and make an impact)

- Louis (supposed to be a dead eye shooter)

- Jimmy (will probably be the first big off the bench)

- Billy (he was the most surprising player in the scrimmage for me...FWIW)

- Scotty

Logan will probably play a limited role since he has been injured and recovering from surgery, and Jake will probably play a somewhat limited role and look to get stronger. That's not a knock on these two guys but Logan is behind the curve here being injured and missing so much practice time and Jake is simply very young with allot of depth and experiance ahead of him. With Brian and Jimmy graduating, he will have more then his fill of playing time.

Sorry I haven't heard anything. However I'd be very surprised if Albany did not win easily. Bucknell currently is missing four of their top six players due to injury - including their only real PG, plus the guy led the team last year in rebounds, assists, and shooting pct and also was the Patriot League defensive player of the year. On top of that, there's an entirely new coaching staff bringing in an entirely new offense and defense, so it figures to be a very slow start for Bucknell this year.
