I'm looking at the RPIs of the teams in conference and it's amazing how bad the bottom three teams are. The america east would be in the middle of the pack if it weren't for UMBC, Bing, and Maine.

That's because people look at the number of conferences ahead of you instead of how far apart they are. On RealtimeRPI today the difference between #28 America East and the #13 Big West is 0.0560, smaller than the difference between #1 and #7. In their Power Rankings, the difference between #28 AE and #13 MAC is smaller than the difference between #1 and #3 - the Big 12 and the Big East.

Once conference ranking is below roughly 13, the differences are minimal and depend on individual teams, not conference average. Fans who say "you should win that league easily because it's so weak" don't account that every league has one or three bad teams, and to win it you still have to beat #2 or #3.

It's much better, athlete-wise, than the AE. It would take a couple of recruiting cycles to ramp up...but we could do it. We would need a deeper core of athletes. Skill-wise and grit-wise, there are no differences in the conferences.

What makes the better athletes go there instead? Is it the money the schools put into the basketball program and facilities? When the schools that left for the caa from the America east, how much more did they end up spending on their athletic programs?

Huge amounts of money. At least double our budget. And, though Matthews Arena isn't the greatest facility (forget the DAC at Drexel, that'a an anomaly of a dump)...we'd need a Stony Brook style renovation of SEFCU to even get close to the CAA facilities.
