Danes vs. Marist?

Recommended Posts

On my way back to Albany, last Friday morning, I heard on a local radio station (K104.7) that the Dutchess County region was anxiously awaking the Siena v. Marist match-up. Then the morning show host announced that in February Albany too would be playing in the region (he only mentioned region not specifically Marist) and should be a great game. I had no idea what he was referring to so I emailed the morning show to see if they could reconcile this confusion. The reply I received simply stated, "I think the game is February 24th. Definitely late February."

Does anyone know what this means, if, in fact, it means anything at all? I thought perhaps they had an early lead to the Brackbuster match... interesting nonetheless.

The Bracketbuster game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 17 so I guess it's possible that the host was just off by one Saturday. I'm not really sure how the games are determined, but the Marist website has the Braketbuster game listed on that day as a home game, and the UAlbany schedule has it listed as an away game.

I haven't heard anything specific though, on the radio or anywhere else.

It will not be the 24th because thats the day Siena plays at Marist

Ya, I see that now as well. I wonder though what they meant by saying the 'Albany game should be a great game' in addition to the 'exciting Siena-Marist game.'

Only possible DI opponents down there are Marist (hosting BB game) and then Army (playing well this year, but are they in the BB..and hosting?).

I doubt that the ESPN B.B. would select Army. Army's RPI is around 173, and chances are the two teams from the Patriot League that would be selected are Bucknell and Holy Cross. Moreover, I just checked Army's website for hoops, see http://www.goarmysports.com/SportSelect.db...amp;SPSID=48142, and I don't see a Bracketbuster game scheduled for them. That would leave Marist as Albany's opponent (surely not Iona (0-16) of New Rochelle, NY?).

Indeed, what a matchup Wilson and Jordan would be! I think we would match up well with Marist downlow, as they didn't seem to be too concerned with rebounding yesterday against Siena, but if Marist can get penetration on our perimeter defense, look out. Marist can shoot from outside ... . They kind of remind me of a New Hampshire-type team (but better).

I've also seen Marist play, and I concur with your observations. They don't seem to penetrate well, but they can certainly light it up from way out on the perimeter.

An Albany-Marist match would be intriguing and would give each team a better insight into how it really performs. Playing in Marist's gym would be a step back in a way since it kind of reminds me of a glorified high school gym with no chairbacks, but the atmosphere inside can be very intense.

There are plenty of teams to choose from. I haven't looked at RPI's or saragins' yet.

In the patriot, Bucknell is the only team that is a designated home team. We can't play them since we already played them. In the real MAC, Akron, Buffalo,Eastern Michigan,Northern Illinois,Toledo and Western Michigan are host teams. In the little maac

Fairfield, Marist, Niagara, Rider and Siena are host teams. We also can not play Siena for the same reason as Bucknell. In the CAA are Delaware, George Mason, Georgia State, Hofstra, Northeastern, Virginia Commonwealth. Obviously rule out Delaware and VCU. That covers most of the close leagues. The whole list is at

My preference would be a decent team that we haven't played before that is relatively close like Marist, Buffalo, Akron,Hofstra, George Mason, Northeastern.

Playing Buffalo would be great! Nothing would make me happier for a potential B.B. matchup (I'm an alum. of both Buffalo and UAlbany)! Although my heart is w/ UAlbany, it would be fun to play the one Division I SUNY school that I don't think we've played yet --- anyone know whether we've ever played Buffalo since going Division I? Surely we must have played them at some point in the past?

Buffalo has a very nice venue for hoops; i.e., Alumni Arena (I used to play pick-up games in their gym as an undergraduate student), and they get a good turnout for basketball games. I remember watching them play North Carolina when I was an undergraduate student at UB.

As far as football goes, Buffalo is also averaging about 13,000-14,000 for each football game, so they have widespread community support for their sports generally. I hope to see us average those kind of numbers in the coming years (and I think we will)!

Playing Buffalo would be a challenge. Buffalo is a tough team (they were up on then-#2 Pittsburgh for most of the game before losing 70-67). They have a senior 6'10" center who would give us fits. Notably, Buffalo beat Siena 69-64 back in December (December 23) while Buffalo was without their top player, the previously mentioned 6'10" senior, Yassin Idbihi.

Unfortunately, we can't play Siena again, so we'll just have to wait until next year. I hope we get a home and home, 2-game series with Siena in 2007-08!
