OOC opponents

Recommended Posts

One of the few things i did not care for this weekend was that the announcer in the arena did not give any other scores; so i may not be quite up to date. But, i think that our OOC opponents Bucknell, Sacred Heart, Siena and VCU are all one victory away from NCAA bids.

While we're somewhat on the topic of this weekend and small complaints ... . First off, I had a great time in Boston, and I'm glad that I went!

My only qualm stems from some of the complaints from just a few of the older fans (and especially the three Vermont fans sitting in the UAlbany section AFTER Vermont had already won and gone home for the weekend) at the game about people standing up and cheering. I understand your argument. I really do. You paid the same amount of money as everyone else. You are sitting in your assigned seat. I understand this. But it's a COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAME! I suppose I have a different expectation that other fans, and each argument is reasonable.

I don't want to get into a long-winded argument about fans' rights to stand up at sporting events and cheer. There is no such "right" so to speak. I'll only add that a ticket is deemed a license (as opposed to a contract) under the law (at least NY law), and subject to the revocation by the licensor (the Arena and its agents) (though if revoked impermissibly, you may have a viable claim against the venue); however, I wasn't aware of any rules prohibiting standing up at a sports event and cheering. I'm not saying that those rules don't exist --- either explicitly or by implication; I just haven't researched them, so I can't say one way or another. Since the goal of the event is to provide "seating" for everyone, I guess it makes sense that the only way to foster ample viewing for all is to have everyone sit (or stand).

I also very much understand that if you are incapable of standing or have a handicap, that is a different issue entirely. And, to the defense of one of the Vermont fans who appeared to have made the complaint about our fans who were standing, the Vermont fan obviously had a hard time standing due to his weight. And, though his team had gone home for the weekend, he still has the ticket to watch the UAlbany game. Having said this, that doesn't excuse my frustration with some of the older fans. It also goes to the manner in which they voiced their complaint; i.e., shouting at the fans. If it were me, I simply would have walked over and asked them nicely. But maybe they did try that, so what do I know ... . If I have a problem with someone or a disagreement with someone, I don't sue them and bring them to court. It's the last thing I would do (i.e., measure of last resort). What I am trying to say is try a less abrasive approach first, and then "amp up" your approach as necessary.

Although I was not one of the people standing, I felt for them, and I shared what I perceived to be their disgust. This is a tricky issue (and I've thought about this at SEFCU games as well), and I'm not sure that there is a right or wrong answer to it. As an arena official, I would have probably acted as the Agganis people did yesterday by simply asking the fans standing to sit down. I understand that if there is a complaint, more often than not, the agents of the venue will attempt to address it best they can and in a way that provides viewing of the event for all.

I raise this issue partially because it was a concern of mine at SEFCU, as eluded to above. I have felt like I always had to sit and be quiet because no one else behind me was standing. It was/is frustrating. Maybe I have to enroll in classes again or move over to the student section once I'm inside!

Where am I going wrong? Anyone have any other/additional thoughts?

hey 2000 - SLOW DOWN a bit

The simple solution to this would have been to allow those who wanted to stand, to be on bleachers in the end zones.

There is a lot of space in that building that was just wasted.

I missed not seeing a section behind the baskets going crazy during free throws.

I love having the tourney in Boston - but this conference really stinks at putting together an EVENT.

Still - please not Bingo next year

Along the lines of complaints for the tournament, here comes my politically incorrect moment of the month:

My only complaint of the week-end is that I did not bring a fistful of dollar bills for the Boston University dance team.....What was up with those routines? All that was missing was a stripper's pole and a non-alcoholic beer in my hand.

As for people standing....the games can get exciting.

Haggyland: good point about the ample availability of seating. To revisit my previous post, I guess when it is all said and done, the idea of the venue is to provide "seating" to every patron, and that is served best when everyone sits, so I guess that is the only answer in the end.

Regarding, the Boston U. dance team, tell me about it! haha ... !

Out of curiosity, what was the tournament like in Bingo like last year? I wasn't there. Is it a nice venue? I have yet to see a game there ... . Based on the Times Union article today (www.timesunion.com, click on sports, then click on UAlbany), the sites are open for next year and the year after, but Boston next year and ALbany in 2009 seemed like strong candidates, no? If we made a bid for 2009, which the AE Commissioner expects we will do, I would imagine improvements to the 'CU before then.

As a side note, the MAAC Tournament is at the Times Union Center next year ... .

The BU dance team... did you see the UMBC dance team? They were naked! Just thought I'd throw that in. Maybe it's a ploy by their teams to divert other teams and fans from the game. I just kept thinking how cold they must have been and hoping their mothers weren't present.

And I can understand the complaints from fans, whose visibility was impeded by the bodies of other fans; however, I honestly think some people just get caught up in the game and forget to sit down. I'm glad UA finally has fans so devoted and enthusiastic; it's well overdue. I hope our fans are as 'rowdie' in VT, that court's intimidating with its boisterous VT fans.

Game On!

I've always been partial to the Binghamton "Mid-Majority" Events Center. In my opinion, it is a beautiful venue. BostonU's was very nice as well, but that's an arena and those seats aren't going anywhere. What I like about Binghamton's Events Center (and I've told my dad this a thousand times so he's probably reading this rolling his eyes) is that it has an arena-like feel, yet it all can be collapsed for track, etc., just like SEFCU. Don't get me wrong I love our home floor and I think, w/ perhaps a few tweaks, we can host a tournament efficiently, but I really do like Binghamton's Events Center. It's open and spacious, bright, and it has the feel of a small arena.

Those three (specifically the older woman) drove me up a wall. The woman singled me out (admittedly, im a big dude) and asked me to sit, which wouldnt have pissed me off if it was done in a calm manner. She immediately started ripping me, insinuating that I hadnt paid for my ticket (which I had bought a tourney pass), and repeatedly telling me "I paid 60 dollars for these seats". She didn't seem to understand that if I sat down, I wouldnt have been able to see as there were three or four rows of people standing in front of me as well. I understand she paid for her tickets, whatever. But there were thousands of open seats and no one was sitting in their assigned area. She could have simply moved two rows back, and she left at halftime anyways. I dont know, it just really pissed me off how she went about it. i said after the agganis official came over, but I probably would have sat had she asked me nicely.

It was the outfits for UMBC and the routine for Boston U. that were a little out of the ordinary. Now I know that there are a lot of better topics to discuss, but I was very surprised by some of those performances, just like I am equally surprised that because of said items that neither team draws that well at home.........That's it for me on that topic.
