  1. I was at the Binghamton game - Overall, we played the WORST game I saw all year (the word pathetic comes to mind). Binghamton totally dominated with stifling defense and effective ball-handling. They easily broke our press, made shots over our defense, stole the ball (seemingly at will) and clearly came to play. They hammered us with their physical brand of ball and we succumbed. Freshmen Fithian and Gordon will definitely improve Binghamton's run down the stretch We threw the ball away, played out of control, missed most of our shots, and played very inconsistent defense. Patch's statistical analysis accurately reflected how different this game could have been, but to SEE how poorly we played was disheartening. The Danes did not show up. The fans in Binghamton (a stong following) expected Albany to lose in their house. They must think our season is an aberration. I was sitting there quietly waiting for us to turn this nightmare around. There was no fear of that coming from the Bingo crowd. We gave them exactly what they expected - a guaranteed win. If we play like this tonite, Maine will prevail. I expect MUCH better performance from every player. By the way, Binhamton's arena is excellent. A great venue to watch a game. They truly will be tough to match up against in the tournament with a real home crowd advantage.
  2. You should ask, but Chris Wyatt still wears his DanePound teeshirt during warmups.
  3. Definitely have seen athletes attend other sport team events - men and women bball players seen at every volleyball game I attended and a couple football games. Agree that attendance at other sport events be mandatory for two events per season for scholarship students. Student attendance has been an issue at sport events as long as I can remember. The exception are the big promo homecoming events - big contests, big give-aways, etc. I believe if you want to bring the students in, you have to raise the stakes with some BBP-like promotions. For instance, for every home game, have one big incentive - plus some ongoing dorm competition with "prizes" for the best spirit or winners of some halftime competition. Bottom line - kids in attendance LOVE seeing the students carry on - it is a BIG part of the fun. I'm sure it is already being done in some part, but give away FREE grade school bball teams and CYO hoop league "kid" passes for every home game (except maybe the BBG). Adults have to bring the kids and have to pay admission - they will buy concessions. The object here is to fill the seats - who cares if the first year or two you make so little on total admission - you have 2-3 K empty seats now. The object here is to build a fan base. No doubt I see improvement - just need to continue to raise the bar. Lots of GREAT ideas being generated here - let's keep it going.
  4. Haven't seen him at any of the games - typically not a good sign.
  5. Had a great time at last night's game - definitely believe there were more than 1400 in the seats. I was dissappointed in the student turnout although I did appreicate the small, but VERY vocal group in the South stands. But where were the painted faces, the flag guy, the (defunct?) Dane Pound, etc.? I think the TV coverage, the band, the dance team, cheerleaders and mascots all add great atmosphere to the games - but still don't see the fan support. No question that the opponent, more wins, and more reasonable weather will bring more fans. As crowd size increases, so do parking problems. People who come to the game and have to park in the Dutch lot have a long, cold walk to the RACC. In weather like last night, this is a big deterrent. Suggest that they set up shuttles that fans can hop on before and after the games - even charge a nominal fee for the service. Had a related problem arise with a friend and long-time UA sportsfan who had a parking pass but was turned away when the lot bacame full. He was furious in that he missed 4 minutes of game time. This kind of mistake is inexcusable and needs to be remedied. Also believe shuttles should be established from the front of the dorms to the RACC. Not sure if this is logistically feasible, but students won't even go to the campus center to catch a bus if walking in arctic weather is involved. Also don't think free admission is enough although freebies, contests, and fun should be continued and well communicated.
  6. Agree that the big man is inconsistent, but his presence in the middle is invaluable regardless. Also see the void created with Iati's absence. However, I'm much more concerned with the "disappearance" of Levi and Q. These two will make or break us the rest of the way. Both are keys to controlling the boards and making those shots inside the arc. They've both shown over the last few years that they can play against anybody. Time to get back in there.
  7. A very exciting game and nice win with virtually everyone contributing. Looking forward to seeing them at home finally this week.
  8. Totally agree about Zoellner - when he's aggressive, he's tough to handle. There were stretches of time when he looked like he was in a trance - almost docile. Really like the fact that he's shooting well from the foul line (4 - 4 last night). If he plays the monster under the basket, dunks his shots, controls the boards, and makes his foul shots, we'll have a legitimate force under the basket. He has shown us that he can do it - needs to stay focused and angry. And speaking of legitimate forces, how about my man Levi Levine. He did a fantastic job against Syracuse and follows with a formidable game agin the green. (8 for 11 from the field and 5 - 5 from the line). Lucious is amazing. How does he do it? One play later in the game, drove to the hole, got buried under the basket by a throng of Dartmouth players, and emerged out of NOWHERE to score. Hope Jamar is not hurt too bad. Really worried our group when he went down. His ability to drive the lane and make something out of nothing is phenomenal. His circus shots alone are worth the price of admission. Can't wait to see Lillis again - adds a whole new dimension to this team. Like Brent W., plays all out - always hustles, looks for the open man, and bangs the boards. He and Brent impressed us from game 1 at Sacred Heart. If this kid Connelly from Jersey is anything like these kids, UAlbany's bball future is bright indeed. Bring on BU - this should be a great game!
  9. Could'nt help but notice our improved ranking in the Sagarin Ratings - 212.
  10. You have to like how Chicago fans who know him describe him (great get for Albany). Hope to see something official on this one before we get our hopes up.
  11. Interesting article about Connelly's team - a great winning tradition but facing some adversity this year. http://www.southjerseynews.com/varsity/vi121904z.htm
  12. Gotta love this win on the road against a team that recently beat LIU. We did it with defense, three's, freethrow shooting and poise. Levi was awesone with key rebounds and timely baskets. Lucious was terrific with 5 of 6 threes, and Jamar and Lucious with had great freethrow shooting down the stretch. Our defense was awesome today holding their top scorer, Ford, to 0 points. All played well including Zoellner, Q, and Brent Wilson (5 points for the big kid). At the end, Brown stated that this team can give Villanova a run for their money - this would be fun to see.
  13. I'm sure you saw that AE foe Boston U beat Michigan at Michigan yesterday - and for what it's worth, is ranked 60 in the latest Sagarin Ratings. This will be quite an early new year matchup at home (1/2/05).
  14. I believe Brown has every right to be embarrassed at their current record. The team should be at least 5-1 - they certainly have the talent to be undefeated thus far. The coach and the players know this and, frankly, should not be satisfied with their inconsistent performances. The mark of a winning program is one that demands 100% from every player at every opportunity. The next three games will tell us what we're really made of. Hartford just beat Long Island by 16 points. Yes, Villanova and Syracuse are formidable opponents, but can we be competitive? Brown must demand excellence from his team to create a winning attitude. Expecting anything less would promote mediocrity. We've had more than our share of mediocre teams in the past.
  15. The women did look good at both ends of the court - missed alot of relatively easy shots though. Could have won by more. Playing well on foreign courts. I too was impressed by Gia Sanders and Mikus. Also agree with Patch that the men need to take care of the easier opponents. Saw that Long Island U beat Wagner by 20 and Stony Brook beat Lehigh by 7. While this usually means little or nothing, I feel we should have taken both teams. Also feel that, if we continue playing like we did in these two losses, LIU and Stony Brook will cause us problems. Time to rise to the occasion and get things turned around.
