  1. I took this photo last week of the house flag during our freak Atlanta snow storm. I thought I'd share with the group and ask if you know where I can get a 2 sided flag. Gotta keep up with the Jones'.. the UGA Jones' hah ha. I won't be one up'd! Pride baby! A second photo, taken further back.
  2. Excellent article. A real case study for those who want to advance UAlbany beyond a regional mid-tier school. A stadium is a real benefit to the larger community. Those of us on this board understand the ROI of a new stadium. It’s incumbent on us to convert our apathetic or ill informed colleagues as to how this benefits them, their school and their community.
  3. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and reserve judgment. We have a legal system for a reason. Let them sort this thing out. These men are presumed innocent at this point in our American judicial system. If they are guilty they get what they deserve. I really don't want to hear any over generalizations here. Collegiate athletes share their love of sport and nothing else. To often anti-collegiate sport activists latch onto a terrible story like this. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. What's with the recurring reference to the football team? Would the press have mentioned the students extra curricular activities if they were on the chess team??? No. Enough said.
  4. It's football season and work is slow so I'm focusing on my beloved UAlbany football. I don't always have that luxury. I found this article that Stony Brook will be a football independent next year AND giving full scholarships. Once again Albany is left behind. How are we going to be able to complete with Stony Brook or are we? Our progress since 1973 has been to return to playing schools we played in 1973, that's progress? First Buffalo moved up and now Stony Brook is moving up and leaving us behind... what about us? Kennesaw State, here in my backyard in Atlanta, didn't even exist a few years ago and I guarantee they'll pass us too. What is going on with Albany???? I think I need a new passion... maybe I can be a Stony Brook fan? (joking!) http://i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=77675
  5. Thanks for all the great analysis. I certainly didn't expect a move too soon. Even in my own estimation, I thought a 8 to 10 year plan seemed aggressive (but possible). I just hate it when people respond as if it were impossible. It just takes time, planning and support from the right people (especially donors, law makers and administration). Can you provide a link or address on where to donate for the stadium? Being out of state, I get news piece meal. Keep an eye on Georgia State and Kennesaw State. With UGA being at capacity, these are 2 quickly growing schools. They'll be moving the athletic program up as soon as humanly possible. They were nothing a few years ago. They may be additional case studies.
  6. I live out of state and would like to purchase a tee or other UA merchandise. The options online are so limited. The 3rd party vendor sites do not carry UA. The alumni site or book store loves to stock purple or drab gray. I have to wear this thing for god's sake... Anything in black or white? I'm 30, not 6. I'm not wearing a purple tee, or Scooby Doo even to the Publix. I know you guys hate it but a 'NY' on the logo wouldn't hurt. People are still confused if it's 'Albany (GA)' or 'Albany (NY)' or 'SUNY Albany' or 'UAlbany' or if there the same or are they different or....
  7. Buffalo is just going through some growing pains. They are getting better every year. I admire their enthusiam and willingness to try. That being said, beating Auburn was a bit of a streach. Who are they playing next year USC? Anyway, if they're playing Auburn it's only a matter of a few years when they'll be dominating the MAC. We'll be envious, I sure.
  8. I'm fine with that. It's our decision to make or not make a move and if so, how to make that move. I mean ours (students, staff, alumni, professors, community). If we choose not to do so, fine. If we choose to wait a few years, fine. It just really burns me when I here people say 'can't' or 'won't'. On paper there is little difference between SUNY and UC, UGA, UF, etc except that SUNY draws blank stares from anyone outside the northeast. A real shame if you ask me. Working in a coprporate environement has tought me a few things. First and foremost is that a losers lose. I work at CNN. You think CNN management says, 'oh Fox is just so great, we can't compete'. We can compete and we will compete. If UA is fine with where we are then that's their decision but I hate hearing the word 'can't' or 'never happen'. I hear that a lot in Albany and when talking to Albany alumni. It kills me every time.
  9. Why can't UAlbany be D1A? Why is that so crazy? 1) We have the student population size. We're bigger than ND, Army, Stanford and Duke. We are at least the same size population as a Boise State or Kent State. That's an off the cuff sampling without having done any research. 2) We are a state school. I would guess 90% of states have a D1A school. Why not New York? Why is our bench mark comparison just the northeast. If I had only compared myself to my family then I would not have gone to college and then grad school. I was the first in my family to go to college because I asked myself 'why not me?' So what if I'm the first. Why compare myself to my family history. To tie it back to Albany, why compare New York to small New England states? Why not compare us to Penn or Ohio, they're just as close. 3) We're a university center based in the state capitol like Wisconsin, Texas, and Boise etc. 4) It doesn't take decades to make the move. Buffalo and UAB went D1A in a few years. Central Florida didn't take very long. 5) The competition isn't just the SEC power house schools. There are a lot of schools that we would be able to compete with: Army, Kent State, Duke, SUNY Buffalo etc. The MAC isn't such a tough conference. 6) Albany students, alumni and professors have a history of pessimism. Ten years ago people would have laughed if I said we could make it to 1AA football or make it to the NCAA basketball playoffs. 7) D1A would improve selectivity and therefore academic standards. It's simple supply and demand. Kids are attracted to big name schools. Who doesn't want to go to the school you saw on tv as a kid? D1A means more interest, which means more applications, which means more selectivity, which means higher academic ratings. Its not rocket science people!. Don't believe me? Compare our academic rating to those 'back water' southern schools like Georgia, Florida and Virginia. I hate to admit it but they kill us. Think big. Be a winner. That's how you get ahead in life. Do you think Donald Trump says that project is too big? D1A may be a few years out but it doesn't have to be decades or be a phase 'never'. Think big.

  11. He's right. I followed my buddy down to the Atlanta area. He's a teacher up in Cobb county. We are both Albany grads. His highschool (Harrison) routinely gets 8,000 people out to a high school game. We had a great time. They're selling t-shirts, hot dogs and all wound up. His wife, a New Paltz, grad and also a teacher was stunned to see the crowd. It'll be a tough sell to get a kid from many parts of the country to play at UAlbany until we get our act together. Oh yeah, it's not just the south east. I've also worked out in California, Idaho and Texas. Speaking of Idaho. Boise State gets HUGH crowds. If Boise Idaho can put something together, I would hope New York could do something or... are we not up to competing with Idaho? They're big time.
  12. That would have been great...but I think there are too many SUNY schools. You'd end with University of New York Just South of Canada (potsdam). :-) 16371[/snapback] I would limit the 'New York' naming convention to the 4 SUNY centers. That's pretty standard among other states. Stony Brook could be 'Southern New York U', Albany couold be 'Eastern New York U', Buffalo would be 'Western New York U' etc... Hey, if they don't want to change that shouldn't stop us. I think the school should use the name they feels works best. From a marketing perspective, I could sell a lot more widgets with the name 'New York' than 'Albany'. New York carries some weight. At the end of the day, it's about attracting students to the school. The more you attract, the more you can be selective. The more you can be selective, the higher your academic rating and that leads directly to the value of the degree and getting a good job. I think Florida and Michigan did it right. Florida has: --Florida State --U of Florida --Florida A&M --Central Florida I just think that UGainesville or Tallahassee State would have sounded small and unimportant. Uninversity of Florida just carries weight that Gainsville never could.
  13. It's because of Albany State Georgia. Miami of Ohio has the same problem. Albany is a very common name. There's an Albany in at least half a dozen states. I'm reminded of this every time I wear a UAlbany shirt in Atlanta. We aren't known outside of NY. Thank god I didn't go to Plattsburg or Potsdam. I always thought SUNY should have followed the Florida model and use the name of the sate as part of the school. I think 'Central New York' or 'Eastern New York' sounds a lot better than UALBANY and leverages 'New York', which makes the school sound more important. When people here New York they think impressive, the name Albany doesn't bring that weight. Think about what sounds better Gainsville State or U of Florida? Athens State or U of Georgia?
  14. I graduated from UAlbany a decade ago and now live in Atlanta. Over the past 10 years I've seen UA go from a D3 school to making the NCAAs. Football has also made progress... thank god! Granted, we haven't gone far enough fast enough. Sure, it sucks for me to constantly hear my co-workers talk about their schools (UGA, GT Tech, Florida and Michigan). Usually most people haven't heard of Albany or I get is that 'Sunny' Albany? I could be down about the school. The point is we're making progress. Why are Albany students always so negative? Must be the crappy weather up there. They complained about everything 10 years ago and they're still complaining now. It's your school. You can make that athletics program a success by going to the games. Success drives success. Go to the games any they'll build you a stadium. Build a stadium and we can elevate the football program to D1A some day. I'll finally be able to watch my school on tv like every other college alum (except for bitter jaded northeasterners). Do your part and the alumni will do ours. I donate to the program. Just go to the games for crying out loud. Some day I hope to be able to join in a college football discussion at work instead of watching the SUNY alum scurry away. It'd be nice to be able to proudly say 'yep, I went to Sunny Albany'. Oh.. and believe me, college athletics comes up all the time in every office I've been in from Florida to California.
