Not sure if you guys have seen this yet. Its not sports related, but important to UA nonetheless.

 

This happened 3 blocks from where I used to live in Albany. Its one of the nicer parts of Pine Hills with a lot of the old Victorian homes having been recently renovated. Very shocking to me. Appears to be totally random.

 

I hope they have a nice moment of silence for this kid and his family at the game on Saturday.

Yeh....unfortunately I saw this story. Senseless crime.....what a shame.

my girlfriend called me and told me because it was her sisters friend that got killed (she goes to Towson and he to Albany of course). Very sad. I would hope the University does something this weekend to remember the young man. Very upsetting.

I used to live on S. Lake and Elberon...though danefan you were closer to Albany Law. My very close buddy ha a cousin that lives on Yates and Ontario.

I owned a house on Morris about 3 blocks up. My wife and I used to walk our dog down to Washington Park a few times a week right passed where this happened. The work they've done on the houses down there is incredible. I was really shocked to see this happen there.

 

I will say this: it is right across the street from the Capital District Psych Center and it is about 5 blocks uptown from the Park South area which is not the greatest of areas.

Crap...I just looked at the pics-- my frat house was TWO doors over in 1993. It was the main Sig Ep house other than 441 Hudson. We used to get yelled at for parking in the psychologists parking lot.

And I wouldn't put it past them. I smell the anti-UAlbany tinge to the article as it is written now.

It is with deep regret that I inform you of the passing of Richard J. Bailey, a senior student from Wantagh, N.Y. Richard was the victim of a shooting in downtown Albany last night. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones, and no words can truly express the sadness and grief that the University community is experiencing at this time. The sudden loss of this young member of our community is a tragedy. Tomorrow evening, a candlelight service for Richard will be held at 7 p.m. at the Campus Center small fountain. The entire campus community is encouraged to come together to attend. We also encourage students to seek support through the University Counseling Center (442-5800 or consultation@albany.edu), Middle Earth (442-5777), or Chapel House (489-8573). As we face this terrible incident, I believe it will help us to join as a community to discuss these issues. This evening, at 6.p.m. a "Safety Forum" will be held in Campus Center 375, and I urge everyone to join the University Police and other staff from the Division of Student Success at the forum. This event was set up quickly to respond to student questions and concerns. Please know that we will schedule follow-up forums as necessary to discuss this issue. We continue to work cooperatively with APD, who is investigating this crime, and the University Police Department is immediately strengthening its directed police patrols and presence around the downtown campus.

When I attended UAlbany I lived on Myrtle near Quail, and walked home from downtown/Lark at night many, many times. I still live in Pine Hills, but more towards South Manning. The police tonight said (according to CBS6) that they were "interested" in two black youths on bikes seen near the shooting. Hmmmm. Gang initiation? A simple robbery gone wrong (since so many kids in the south end, arbor hill, ect have ZERO respect for human life)? Whoever did it, for the APD the clock is ticking. The Chief seemed pissed and determined to find the killer(s), but we've heard that talk before. 9 murders in the city so far this year, which seems unusually high for Albany. I don't feel like moving to the 'burbs yet, but if this keeps up Guilderland here I come!

I write to invite you to a memorial mass for Richard J. Bailey that will be held at the University at Albany in the Campus Center Assembly Hall on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 1:30 pm.

 

 

 

Our University community will be gathering with the Bailey family on this day to celebrate Richard’s life on what would have been his 23rd birthday. As part of this memorial mass, Richard will be made an honorary member of the University Police force. As you know, he planned to become a police officer after his graduation and had taken the police exam in NYC on the day prior to his death.

 

 

 

We expect the ceremony to last approximately an hour and a half with a reception in the Campus Center Fireside Lounge (right outside the Assembly Hall) following the end of the service.

 

 

 

I hope you will be able to join us to celebrate the life of Richard J. Bailey.

Freaking animals....snuff out a life like they were squashing a gnat or something. Hopefully justice will be served.
