#99781 National Championships

Posted by jimbo on 27 April 2017 - 09:11 AM

I don't think anything less than the A-10 or AAC would be worth it.

The way SUNY formed was not helpful to the cause of major athletics and a tradition never really formed. Plus, when the Land Grant Universities were formed back in the 1800s, NY chose to award it to

Cornell while most other states created universities that would become large and now P5 participants. We've got a few state schools at Cornell...big whoop in terms of sports. Schools like Albany are

trying really hard to develop a solid fan base and a modern "tradition". Student apathy is rampant, not just here, but in the whole system. Its nice to see MLAX drawing so well. Football, early season especially, should be

packed.

Field Hockey had a shot a few years ago, but I'd say we were one step below the elites still.

I'd say this year Marr and squad has a legitimate shot at a national championship.  We need to be firing
on all cylinders and playing our best.

In the AE for basketball, never.

Football.... I'd hope we can win one in the not so distant future.  Wondering how some of you feel about
the progress of our football program.  Think we sit where we should be sitting in terms of evolving as a CAA program?

. In general, yes. My feelings probably parallel a lot of other fans when I say that it's frustrating as heck that we have not been able to secure one reliably talented QB since Fiacchi. Beyond that it appears the team is noticeably bigger, faster and perhaps stronger. The recruiting area has spread further south and UA appears to be a viable alternative for kids who have FBS offers. I would like to think that UA has worked it's way out of the bottom third of the CAA and into that middle pack of teams that can compete with every other team, but perhaps can't get to the top echelon without an exceptional year. Not worried about the D, but very worried about the O. Everything this year hinges on EB coming back from ACL, an inexperienced line coming together and one of the QBs showing that they can play in the CAA with consistency. I'm afraid that getting all three of those is like drawing to an inside straight. But as a fan I can only hope. Now the task is to get that 8th win to get to the tourney. Then the task is to surpass NH, JMU and UR. We've got a ways to go for that to happen.

I think the good news is that we may have been flat and sloppy, but still doubled up a decent opponent. What a luxury a dominant FO player can be.

All that being said, there was an awful lot of comments in the Buffalo News and other places that UB should have dropped football instead.

#99403 SUNY Free Tuition

Posted by jimbo on 02 April 2017 - 06:01 AM

I saw an article recently that said NYS would have a shortage of 110,000 teachers over the next decade with critical shortages in STEM and languages. If they want to do a program to encourage or subsidize aspiring teachers I could maybe go along with it. BUT tie it to the requirement that you must become a teacher in the needed disciplines AND teach in NYS for a required number of years. Otherwise, the tuition bill comes due. Guess I was born too late. In the early 70s I wanted to be a math teacher and they told us that for every math teacher opening in the state there would be 100 applicants from UA alone. I dropped out of the Ed program. My wife graduated with dual teaching certificate in English-Spanish and gave up after about 5 years of not being able to find a full time job. My how things have changed.

Count me as one who is skeptical. Do we really need to subsidize the tuition of English Lit, philososophy, etc, etc majors when we need teachers, STEM grads, nurses, physicians, etc? Go ahead....hate me.

I'm watching on my iPad. No prob. Although the audio cut out. Video far superior than the junk our AD puts out.

Reading about the Monteverde game at noon today in the USA Today HS sports site. It's interesting that the guy (Cam Healey) we are so high on getting to UA is not even mentioned in the team summary. I guess when you are the number 3 ranked HS team in the country your talent goes pretty deep lol.

It's on ESPN right now.

Watching! Kid has a sweet 3 stroke and really hustles. UA mention and commentator said WB should give his staff a raise for landing Healey.

#99264 Mascot Madness: Damien is losing to an acorn!

Damien loses 51.48% to 48.52%. They don't give a hard count of votes.

Must be a lot of squirrels with internet access.

I disagree. Against an overmatched and well beaten team you do not have players, subs or otherwise, chuck 3 after 3 in an obvious attempt to run up the score. I'd like to think there is still something called sportsmanship, but admittedly it's hard to find. Run clock, toss it inside, drive the lane. Don't toss 3s. Where's Bill Lambier when you need him?

And my last comment on this game: if instead of Brown, we had a men's coach named "Cheese", we would have coaches Mac and Cheese. Which would be fine....as long as its real....and not flatbread pizza.

We have to beat Vermont next year. Absolutely at any cost.
Will Brown's clock has reached midnight. He is now merely mortal.

what?

The carriage has turned into a pumpkin. This loss is as bad as UVA in 2007.

Huh? Against a 28-5 team, riding a 20 game win streak, 16-0 in the conference, 9pt road dogs...and they get to the last minute before losing. That's what qualifies as a bad loss?... I'll take this one any day over the home tourney hairball they coughed up against Hartford last year.
