Thanks for posting the video and providing some context about the site location UAalum72.

 

As far as how this is all interconnected, I'm not quite sold yet. I'm very positive on the project but I don't see what ties it all together. My wife is a neuroscientist at the Salk Institute in La Jolla. It's a world renowned institution founded by Jonas Salk who cured polio. Salk is focused on biological sciences. San Diego is known for its biotechnology. Noticed I said biotechnology and not a laundry list of loosely related or not related science and engineering areas. I'm not sure how cyber security is at all related to biological research. You can make an arguement that it's a future technology but it's not related. Nonetheless, I'm obviously a huge supporter of the university. I hope they thought it out well.

At the bottom of the release, the E-Tec rendering looks like they plan to put it at the end of the podium

 

Edit: Page 16 of the Powerpoint shows E-Tec placed on both sides of the Life Science Building

 

Channel 13's 6:00 followup focused on the proposal not mentioning cleaning up or controlling the student ghetto (with Youtube video of Kegs & Eggs), and Mayor Jennings suggesting returning the drinking age to 18 (presumably so students could drink on campus and not bother city residents)

Is there any talk of ripping up some of those huge, massive parking lots and replacing them with some sensible parking decks? It's funny to see Georgia Tech and UCSD with parking decks... Albany has terrible snowy weather and could use some covered parking. Building verticle could free up a lot of space on campus. Driving around the ring road all you see is a series of parking lots... sorry, a personal pet peeve of mine.

 

It's interesting to see the book end approach to their design. I would assume there is a pass through via the Life Science Building?

I've always thought the same thing. You really need to go up a few floors before you gain any appreciable spaces.

While E-tec will require more parking, the gain from a deck will not be parking space but the land freed up for other uses.

Campus Notebook - Scott Waldman reports on the delay.

 

"UAlbany had a fairly detailed plan on its website more than 12 months ago...That quickly disappeared off the school's website after I first reported about it ... the school might not have had any choice but to retool its plan...The vast change to the plan and the delay in its presentation came from the Cuomo administration, according to school and administrative sources."

The fact that we had to completely retool it makes me wonder if we were completely off base with our initial plan. On the other hand...if working this closely with the Governors office ensures a speedy approval then all I well I suppose. Binghamton waited what almost 5 months for approval? I guess it can be seen as a positive that the Governor is taking this much interest in UAlbany and our plan.

I think working this closely with the governor gives a little cover from some critics who say it doesn't do anything for revitalizing the student ghetto area - which had been part of some earlier concepts. That doesn't seem to be part of State St.'s agenda, and we might not have gotten the money for it anyway.

I don't see anything in our crime rates that stand out. Georgia Tech had a rash of off campus attacks. That's just Atlanta. GT students are not immune. These sorts of things happen in any city. You can't tell me that Miami, Cleveland or NYC is any ssfer. The university can't protect students when they go off campus nor should they try. All are over 18 and are adults. It's no more tragic or news worthy in my mind when a NYU, Albany or GT student gets attacked versus an 18 year old working at McDonalds. The 18 year old at McDonalds doesn't make news.

Agreed...with the name of the University attached to these stories it can come off as UA is somehow complicit in these crimes. Fact of the matter is that this is a City of Albany problem if I may be so callous to call it that. It's tragic but this could have happened to an RPI student or Siena or St. Rose student.

100% disagree. It has a direct impact to the school when hs students and their parents are deciding on colleges and they see stories of students getting shot and even murdered off-campus. You're going to tell me their first thought is "oh, it's not the schools fault"? LOL! They are thinking..."maybe I should send my kid to Binghamton". Also using the excuse that it happens everywhere so nothing should be done about it is weak.

 

Atlanta is a considerably larger city and there are no student slums around the school. I know, I live there. There is also a considerable police presence and the cops reacted swiftly to that rash of violence that happened recently. Also GT has a much better reputation that UA, so parents may be willing to overlook those few instances. There also seems to be a pattern of this at UA.

 

Look, the kid was an idiot...walking around in that area at 3am is not smart, but the area needs to be revitalized and there needs to be a greater police presence. Considering the economic impact of the school, and that most students come from upper middle class families downstate, I don't see why the city cant attract developer interest.

No one said that UA shouldn't try to do something about it...but short of pleading with the City of Albany who if you haven't noticed have had a mess on their hands ranging from Albany High and other crimes around that area what would you like them to do? Perhaps they should appropriate some fund for a militia police squad to escort students off campus.

 

Campus police are directly responsible for the safety of students ON CAMPUS, City of Albany is responsible for this and other areas in the City. What would you have UA do? You make it seems like UA leadership is just chillaxing saying...screw it, not our problem. When in fact they've sent NUMEROUS e-mail to students (I know, I'm a student) regarding off campus safety, they have meetings and bulletin postings around campus etc. Short of Pres. Philip strapping on an uzi I fail to see how the University is complicit in any of this.
