Name Change

Not sure how serious it is but Buffalo athletics is considering a name change to emphasize 'New York'.

 

As a former Georgia and now California resident, I hope Albany follows suit. If we want a national program we need to deempasize Albany and emphasize New York. No disrespect but no one outside of New York cares about Albany. Even Syracuse has been pushing the 'New York's college team'.

 

I hope we don't sit back and just watch Buffalo take 'New York'.

I wouldn't mind a move towards directional branding.

 

Buffalo - Western New York University

Albany - New York State University (being in the capital and all )

Binghamton - Central New York University

Stony Brook - Southern New York University

 

It would be a lot more recognizable outside of the northeast than the city names.

While we are on the subject of names can someone enlighten me. Why are mascots always a dog, cat, bird or some combination, like a Bearcat? The campus has been the subject of a lot of criticism. Let's face it, UAlbany is not your traditional college campus. It's different. But, I've always loved it. It reminds me of a Starship. Why not the UAlbany Starship, or Vulcans or better still the Klingons. I just hope that none of the Lady Danes who read this blog will insist we become the Albany Shih Tzus.

Don't drink but maybe I should. If I were a marketing guy, which I am not, I would try to rebrand the UAlbany product. I think the student body would be far more likely to come to games dresses up like Klingons than Great Danes.
