Albany Maintains Commissioner's Cup Lead After Winter Season

BOSTON - After capturing three of the five America East winter championships, Albany has grown its lead in the 2016-17 Commissioner’s Cup standings through the completion of 11 championships. The Great Danes won both the men's and women's indoor track & field titles as well the women's basketball crown to earn 124 winter points and maintain their hold on first place. As they did in the fall, New Hampshire and Stony Brook followed in second and third place, respectively.

The Commissioner’s Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference’s 17 sports.

• The Great Danes kept a trio of impressive streaks alive, winning their 12th-straight men's indoor track & field crown, fifth in a row on the women's side and sixth-consecutive women's basketball championship.
• New Hampshire maintained its hold on second place after winning its first-ever women's basketball regular-season title and placing second in women's swimming and diving.
• Stony Brook stayed in third after accumulating the second-most points in men's basketball and finishing second in women's indoor track & field.
• Vermont, which swept the men's basketball regular-season and tournament titles becoming the first team to go 19-0 again conference foes in a season, followed in fourth, while UMBC won its third-straight swimming and diving title to tie for fifth place with UMass Lowell.

The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points.

In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, track & field, swimming & diving), the first-place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team which receives two points.
