Gontarek Arrested & Suspended

Recommended Posts

damn shame...over pot no less. He should have been more responsible, no doubt about that, but what a silly thing to arrest someone for. a-hole campus cops.

Um no. Grontarek is the a-hole here.
I stand by my statement. Arresting a kid and potentially ruining his life over pot is bull$iena. Cops could have exercised some discretion in the matter.

Using pot should be treated like a traffic offense. Pay a large fine so you dont do it again. End of story.

There are a number of issues, possession of an illegal substance, NCAA and school violations but the most serious to me looks to be the tampering charges (I'm no lawyer)....it appears that once he realized he was about to get cooked by the cops, he tried to swallow the weed or flush it down the toilet to destroy evidence. I'm sure once he did that, the cops were not pleased.

Just a terrible series of judgment calls by this young man that probably panicked...I suspect we won't see him this year and potentially off the team for good. In matters such as these, this school and this administration always does the correct thing. I have no reason to doubt their judgment. I'm sure this will be handled appropriately.

The thing is, the dumb ass was possessing and using during the football season. This stupid $iena

should be giving his 1000% effort both on and off the field this time of year. We are trying to build a championship football

program, we don't need that crap.

I'd imagine he just blew his scholarship free ride out the window.

This is the point I'm trying to make. In New York a UPM should only result in a civil fine, like a traffic ticket. It's a $100 ticket. It's not a criminal offense. That's why I'm confused as to why the university police are arresting a student on campus for a violation, which leads to me believe that there are other circumstances here. Or perhaps UAlbany has a problem with an over zealous police force. Either way, it's a dumb move to put yourself in that position.

UAlbany and its fans are just like our society - blame it on the police.

Why not let the whole story play out, before passing judgement on anyone!

I thought part of the drug testing for UA athletes dealt with pot use?????

IMO, the issue is probably not the marijuana, I'd bet that most arrests at large universities are marijuana related. I know that a lot of the SEC schools have a one game suspension policy for marijuana. I'd guess there is no significant penalty for the average student for smoking marijuana...

I think the issue is the tampering and that he's been the face of the program for the last couple of years - he's Gattuso's star recruit. I'm sure the coach and AD are embarrassed. Gattuso gave him a chance- he was a late qualifier who only had offers from Division 2 schools...but not only did Gattuso give him a scholarship but he tells the dunking the basketball story to every reporter that will listen and he brought him - a sophomore to CAA media day.

Imagine if he played against Maine on homecoming - the only sellout and everyone will be watching the star player who smoked marijuana and is still allowed to play. There's not much media coverage but there would be an editorial about that.

He'll definitely be back. Remember the kid that was arrested for terrorist threats? He was suspended for the rest of the season - finished sitting out his redshirt year and now he'll be the starter while Gontarek is out.

He has to grow up and this a part of that process. He's young and stuff happens. I just hope he recovers and gets over this so he can have a good college experience.

Don't get me wrong- I think Gattuso did the right thing by suspending him from the program...and indeed, we don't yet know all of the facts about the case. Gontarek could have been a d!ck to the police and gave them no choice but to arrest him. I just think it's sad in this day and age that a kid's career and perhaps his life could be ruined over one very minor offense. It's silly.

The last time a star was suspended during the season was 2012…Drew Smith….1 game…..lost 30-0 to Wagner. I don't expect history to repeat itself because Drew was not

replaceable and there's lots of competent wideouts to step in. Still, I hope there's not a let down. You lose two captains and now your star receiver and it's gotta catch up at some point.

Here's the thing….the school (taxpayers, supporters, etc) are saying to the player: "Here's a free college education worth about $90,000. In order to keep this free education you have to play

football and follow these rules." We don't know anything about the case at hand other than what has been stated. Was he driving? Did he give the cops a hard time? Did he mouth off? Did they chase him? Did

he toss the (alleged) pot into a trash can? We don't know. We only know the result.

That idiot Winston down at Florida State was accused of RAPE!!!! (far more serious) and theft. He continued his career at FSU and now is in the NFL. I bet dollars to doughnuts this kid will be back in the fold. It was a stupid mistake and he deserves a second chance.

I love this thread. So much disparity.

Here's my thought: Gontarek was dumb, breaking the law, the subject of overzealous cops...whatever way you want to describe it. Most on this thread are missing the point.

HE PUT HIMSELF IN THIS POSITION. A TEAM LEADER DOES NOT DO THAT...PERIOD!

He is expected to be a leader, he says he wants to be a leader...but frankly, he was selfish. He was selfish because he put himself around, near, or by marijuana. He broke school policies, state policies, and the big one...FEDERAL policies.\ Whether we agree on the legalization of marijuana or not is not the issue. The issue is he knowingly broke rules. Leaders (and people who were given a chance by a coach) do not do that. Leaders are Michael Nicastro who, after suffering a devastating injury, showed up and acted like a coach.

Leaders don't put themselves in a position to hurt their team. Selfish people do.

Gontarek surely will be back...and surely being around marijuana isn't the worst thing ever. The worst thing ever, for a team, is letting down your teammates.

I hope he learns his lesson.

And I hope we never emulate FSU or any other program that turns a blind eye. Albany develops men and women...we should not be developing them to think they are above the rules. That's a huge problem with millennials in the work-force today. HUGE.

Maybe Gattuso should give the kids that were highly recruited by Coach Ford et. al in the first CAA class a chance. Some have been on the shelf and never touched the field and it's not due to a lack of talent or size.

University at Albany football wide receiver Josh Gontarek was arrested Monday afternoon after he threw marijuana out of a window of a residence hall on campus, according to the police report obtained today.

UAlbany football coach Greg Gattuso suspended Gontarek indefinitely on Tuesday.

"University police found Gontarek in possession of 10.2 aggregate grams of marijuana, which he tried to conceal by throwing it out of the window, the report said.

Gontarek was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, and conceal/alter/destroy physical evidence, a Class E felony"

So this kid made a stupid decision, got scared and threw a small amount of pot out of his dorm window, and they charge him with a felony? Ridiculous.

What's wrong with people on this board...purple colored glasses?

He broke the law and he is getting punished for it. Where is the issue? School police did what they were suppose to do, enforce the law. Not sure why so many people have an issue with it. Being stupid doesn't mean it's okay if it's illegal.

If you want a thread on legalizing pot or when something should be a felony or misdemeanor that may be for a different forum lol. Well we will have a law school sometime..maybe we can start a law school sub forum :) ..half joking.
