UA vs. Cuse (2/21/16) - TWCable/ESPN3

Recommended Posts

I was @ the game and I came away with: either cuse is really really GOOD or we are really really BAD. I have no love for cuse and agree with 06, that we should NOT be playing them; but I hope the really really good part is true or it is going to be a long season for UA. I know it is much too early to panic, but I saw the whole game live and the first half again on dvr; and we were really helpless out there.

Not to make excuses (BAD is just BAD, no matter what); but I know Scott constantly complains about the early start of the season and warm weather and indoor teams have such an advantage. And he is absolutely correct; and it makes playing cuse early in the season a losing proposition {and because of conference affiliations it is getting more and more difficult to play occ games anytime but early}. Anyhow, cuse looked in mid season form and well, we just looked bad [AWFUL actually.]

I know/hope we are not as bad as we looked yesterday!

What is everybody grousing about? We faced SU, #7 in country for our first game and, until we started taking risks to get back into the game, were playing them within 2 - 3 goals. That's even after spotting them 2 quickies while we warmed up ;). We were very sloppy and it shouldn't be a surprise our faceoff situation hasn't magically changed - we had a frosh facing the #2 specialist in the NATION (and our guy is apparently a really fast learner!) - that's what happens in a first game. No way our guys can simulate that speed and size in practice. We'll get much better as we see other top teams and get used to the speed. SU is just damned good - their frosh are fantastic and man sized. Second tier ? I suppose it depends on your definition but certainly we are not yet able to recruit at that level. It would be nice to play SU later in the season but it's still an excellent opportunity to play a top team, indoors, ... . It's a compliment to the program that so many of us expect great things from these guys.

I don't really follow LAX but I understand that we were pretty good with the Thompson's, etc. Weren't we ranked, etc.? Why are we not recruiting on Syracuse' level?

Same reasons we don't recruit at Syracuse's level in basketball. They have nine national lacrosse championships, we haven't gotten past the quarter-finals. They've been playing lax for 100 years. They have the dome.

Understood. I know we're not on the same level academically but that doesn't always matter to all student athletes...although that just may be the case in basketball where players have a higher chance of going to play in a pro league elsewhere in the world and make decent money versus a LAX player who might make $50k playing LAX and needs an education to fall back on. I could see that being a concern.

Thanks.
