[MBB] 2018-2019 Recap

Recommended Posts

So, 2018-2019 started off pretty shaky. We lost 80% of our scoring with the unexpected departures of David Nichols and Joe Cremo prior to the season (as well as other graduates). That forced the UA staff to scramble and fill the roster. As a result, going into the year, most of the faithful and basketball community thought this would be a down year for the Danes.

That proved to be true.

Unfortunately, the UA staff struck out on literally every single one of those replacements. Miller, Brooks, Flory, Starks, etc. for one reason or another didn't make a difference.

However, not all is bleak in Albany. After starting the year giving a lot of minutes to redshirt or true freshmen and having a rough go of it, those same freshmen really came on strong as the season went on. Guys like Cameron Healey, Antonio Rizzuto, Adam Lulka and most recently Malachi de Sousa REALLY give this program and its fans something to look forward too. That core is going to be successful. If the additional guys they are bringing in for 2019-2020 live up to the hype (Trey Hutcheson and Mitch Dougherty), this team will be competing for the AE championship again in no time.

Personally, my whole thing this year was watching the development of the young players. I saw Healey remain level headed and calm/collected all season long for such a young player. I think this is his team. Rizzuto missed a lot of time due to injury to start but once he worked his way into game shape, he was good on the defensive and offensive ends and did a great job as a role player. Malachi de Sousa started out really poorly and barely played but after the winter break and perhaps some time to rest and catch his breath, he REALLY came on strong at the end of the year. Kid is uber athletic and if he continues to improve, he may pass Healy as the best player on the team as I feel he has the higher upside overall.

Good summary Eli, there are good pieces coming back and surely next season should be over .500, and a top 4 in AE standings.  Still have some things to work on over Summer into Fall.

--we have mentioned the point guard issue till we turn blue

--concern on Lulka during 2nd half of season, production down offensively, did not demand ball, what looked like a Sam Rowley prodeje faded

--Hank did not improve all season, takes the opening tip and then rides the pine.  Odd he never finds loose change around basket either for an easy basket.  May go smaller next year, have De Sousa take the tip?

-- I agree Healy, Rizzuto, de Sousa will all get better, some may have hit the freshman wall especially Healy who was asked to play major minutes and the point

-- don't think we can get a lot out of French although his size says we should.  Lauderdale looked like a star for a couple games then not much at all.  Still like him off bench for some bulk

We now have the looong off season to get the itch for next November, hopefully no shocking news like last year with surprise departures.  Pleasure as always chatting with you gents in what was a difficult season.  UP from here!

I think each and every player--even those who did not get many minutes this year--are capable of returning and making significant contributions, either off the bench or in a starting role, if they put the work in. Having a better record next year is not guaranteed, and it will require hard work in the weight room and gym starting NOW.

I think someone like French could be really good in this league. Question is how bad does he, like others on the team, want it. Hard work and effort is what the America East is built on. Four-Star guys with natural athletic ability and skill don't play in this league (with rare exception). Those who stay and put in the work will be champions.

Do a couple small things very well. Imagine if French and Lauderdale worked on their 10-15 foot jumpers this off season and got really consistent at that range? Picture having guys like that flash the high key against a zone, spin, and shoot. Imagine if our bigs worked their forearms and biceps all winter and protected the ball even 50% better? Imagine if our guards turned the ball over half as much? Little things matter, and if everyone focusses one one or two things that they can improve upon and do well, this team can beat a Vermont (and a lot of other teams).

Will be an interesting off season for sure.  Another questions is what to make of Jerotic. I did a little research on him and he looks like a decent player. I also believe he is 20 years old already.

Will be interesting if he stays or goes. And if he can contribute to the success of the team .

I think he will be here... Athletic and can defend 4 positions. I was told they like him, needs a lot of work on shooting. More of a slasher.
