This video that we saw some time ago is very different from the .pdf that was put up. Seems like the plans have been scaled back significantly. Not only Phase I but there is an access shaft now that wasn't in the video, the tower appears to be not as deep, no club, no tie in to SEFCU Arena from what we can tell. Maybe in future phases.

I thought it would only be tied into SEFCU if it was built where the current SEFCU lot is. I didn't think it would tie in from current proposed site.

host the ncaa lacrosse tournament like Sbu has done?

 

Just getting this initial phase completed will be huge in terms of future expansion.

University at Albany football fans will finally be able to call a stadium home come 2012, thanks to the construction of a multi-use facility to replace the inadequate University Field.

 

The school’s Director of Media Relations, Karl Luntta, confirmed the plan, which calls for construction of the stadium as well as a revamped track facility to begin in late 2011 and early 2012, in an e-mail to the ASP.

 

The ASP has learned that a contract has been awarded to Heery International, an architecture firm that has designed numerous educational and governmental buildings around the world, to design the facility. Luntta said that a contractor has yet to be selected for the project.

 

According to Luntta, the school is still in the design phase of the multi-faceted project, which includes the football facility, the repair and replacement of the school’s current track and the construction of an artificial turf field for use by recreational clubs and student intramural teams.

 

Expected completion of the entire project is in late 2012, which would likely be too late for the football season that year but allow the track team to use their facility in the spring of 2013.

 

It is unclear how large the stadium will be, as Luntta said the school is still determining where the facility will be on the campus.

 

However, in a press release by Heery International, the company says that they have been contracted by UAlbany to build an 8,000-seat stadium with the ability to increase the seating to 24,000. University Field’s seating capacity in its dilapidated bleachers is 10,000 people.

 

“We spent a great deal of time at Albany assessing both the campus and the end-users’ desires and requirements,” said Mike Holleman, Director of Sports Facilities and Vice President of Heery in the press release. “The study dictated the decision to move the stadium to a new site, away from the existing track. We will also coordinate the design of a new, expanded track and field facility at the existing location.”

 

Heery was hired by the school to conduct an concept and assessment study in 2008 and 2009 to determine the feasibility of the project.

 

The construction of the stadium will surely be a relief to the countless UAlbany students and fans who have called for a new football stadium for years to help a growing program. The school’s track team will finally be rewarded with a new facility to fit its championship-caliber standards, after years of being forced to host meets in nearby areas.

The main part is that it's still in the design phase, so anything out there really is not the final project.

UAlbany's website says "The University at Albany's indoor complex is complemented by fine outdoor facilities, including University Field, which seats capacity crowds of 10,000 for football games, and has an all-weather, 400-meter track surrounding a natural grass surface. "

 

Odd they use the verb "Seats" .. I guess sitting on the grass is sitting.

Don't remeber what the Giant crowd was, but the last 2 home coming games (09 & 10)had crowds of 6255 and 6624 in spite of the crappy stadium. 08 was a rainy day and a smaller crowd.

I tried counting once and couldn't find over about 3400 plus whatever temporary seats they might put in the end zone.

 

10 rows of wooden seating, end sections truncated - maybe 1800.

Sections of 5-row bleachers on top where the flowerpots used to be - another 700

Visitors' side 875 tops.

 

What else - the two rows of steps below the wooden seats? press box? second-floor balcony inside the gym? I don't think the fans are skinny enough to sit tighter than the numbered places.
