Haven’t posted in many moons...long time donor...way before there was a GDAC....and I dont want and won’t exchange banter over the efficacy of this move...in sum this move disappoints and disgusts me..it is an affront to a fine academic institution and a coach who embodied its ideals. Unless Benson goes and/ or Brown is restored my contributions to UAlbany Athletics are over and I have urged colleaques and friends to do likewise. This action should not stand and can not be tolerated by any right thinking individuals. That’s it.3 points

I know you're local. You would fired every coach a few times over by now. PS. that was a joke.3 points

Great optics this week: -You fire the coach that a large portion of the fan base wanted to keep on the day he and his wife are honored by the American Cancer Society for their fundraising efforts. -You announce a college coaching search that'll cost 50-100K on the same day the university announces it has problems with debt. It's only Tuesday but you're really winning the flippin week UAlbany Athletics.2 points

I'll there will be someone hired in the next 3 or 4 weeks at most, maybe even sooner. You're getting your ass handed to you as an AD by fans and local pundits, the quicker you get a new face out there and a new face of the program the better it will be for Benson. One thing that could delay it is the state review of the new contract.2 points

The one I am most worried about leaving is Amica. Kid has a wheels and in the few minutes we saw him play he was as advertised. I listened to an interview with him last year at this time and he stated 2 reasons for coming here: he saw an instant path to PT with Clark leaving being 1, and the other was Brown being here for so long. Injuries derailed #1 and now Brown is gone.2 points

I knew I'd get undercut here but you went right to the bottom w/ free. I'm out.2 points

Agree. Heck, throw my name in there, lol. In 1981 I took Principles and Techniques of Coaching Basketball, a 3 credit course taught by the legendary Doc Sauers and I got a B+. 😆😆2 points

Idk what that even means, but I’ll pass. FYI I’ve also declared my interest for the job lol.2 points

We could blame the school, but the administration that hired Benson to make that transition isn't there anymore, so I can only blame Benson. I'd love to see us climb the ladder, do well in the CAA and keep a nationally ranked football team. I have great season tickets in the stadium. That said: I put the name recognition and help to a Universities national reputation of doing well at FCS Football somewhere between Division 2 and Division 3 basketball. Most people do not consider FCS football as D1 football. It is what it is. Becoming a CAA Football powerhouse means jacks&i7 on nation2 points

I'm sure there has to be some relief to longer have to deal with the BS of Benson, etc. That has to be somewhat a weird/good feeling, but I wouldn't take that this is the outcome that was wanted. As other have posted his father was clearly stating he was "loyal" on Twitter. He wanted to stay, Benson just made it difficult along the way. And I agree with you, he will land on his feet for a new adventure, but again I wouldn't take that as he is okay about it. And I know everyone can have their own opinion. I get not all of us have the personal facts so it is what it is on this board, based on w1 point

While I understand your sentiment and recognize the reality, my opinion is unchanged from what read and private conversation. Will has put up with a lot of BS, I keep having this nagging thought that he may not be as broken up about it as people think. He'll land on his feet and take on the next challenge. Obviously it's always hard to move on after that many years and uncertainty of where things will go from here but, how do I put this delicately, there will be some release in not having to deal with some of the clown-show.1 point

Classy read, even in his final moment and interaction at UA he did it the right way. That reads to me as someone who is content with this change and ready to try and make a run at a new opportunity. Maybe I'm crazy! I didn't detect any bitterness even though the back-story and the premeditated nature of the move is rotten to the core.1 point

Event is online or on your tv Fox23 today at 7:30 . Will will be given a national award and Peter Hooley will also be attending virtually. https://www.acscapitalregionevents.com/coaches-vs-cancer/1 point

I've always had a special spot for Peter and IMO his number needs to be in the rafters. That was a great post and 'tribute' to Will Brown. Nailed it. We may not miss Brown the coach as much as we think but we will ABSOLUTELY miss Brown the community member. He definitely built something he could be proud of at UA.1 point

One last time: Number of Men's sports schedule listed on website: 7 Number of Women's sports scheduled listed website: 9 Football is the most expense of any sport in D1 / deficit concern at most schools, baseball is next because it attracts so little attention....love Mueller..... as I have said before.... see you down the road .... going .... going .... gone1 point

Football and baseball will be the first things to go....ask the people at Northeastern....Hofstra....that was ugly....the had just recently made improvements to the stadium....they still have a large football alumni group...but the powers that be at the time saw the money spent on football could be used better...comes down to priorities...1 point

Heck, I would coach for free if I could get unlimited original Sutters Mill burgers and fries from back in the day for you old timers that remember them and how they saved you from UAS food on many nights. We'll have to agree to disagree if he should get a pass on 3 losing season and 4 out of 5 times not getting out of quarters but it's a moot point now. I would have been fine either way and I'm not a long distance fan. I vehemently disagree that the program was in good shape. Sorry...paper talent doesn't win. Did they show promise this season? Sure but 3 games ago they were an unmitigated mess losing to sbu at home.1 point

A solid No to this. The 5th place finish this year was not a result of coaching or players. It was at the whim of the AE conference schedule makers. The lousy part of this decision is that whatever issues I've had with recruiting in the past couple of seasons, they seemed to figure it out this year. Horton, Kelly, Champion and Doles were all good recruits. On paper, we would have had a lot of talent returning next year. Funny the way the arguments have gone. It seems like the alumni/fans furthest from Albany are mostly "OK" with the coaching change. While the alumni/fans closest to A1 point

Always great to get fired on the day the local news broadcasts a special about a prestigious national award you won for your community involvement and work on cancer. Great Job Benson and UA. I am a Brown supporter, and I wanted him renewed a thousand times before we keep Benson at the helm to keep pushing us into being a "football school." Does the department know that they will never become a football school in the Northeast? It's impossible. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Capital Region people are sports snobs. They will never fully support a program at the FCS leve1 point

I think for some of us we already believe Benson has failed. And what we want is to try to come out of this, is that people find out how he is running his program who may not know what's really going on. Because we don't have faith that whatever he does next is going to help the University in the long run. We are in fact bleeding purple and gold because of the hurt and frustration that he is allowed to stay there and damage the University. And no longer giving support at least for me means financially. I will still always root for my Great Danes. But Benson is not going to get a dim1 point

This. $15 for parking was a joke. Should have been like $1 or $2 or free...instead $15 parking + 4 tickets + vending for 4 people = too expensive of a family night out so people found other places to spend their cash.1 point

MMMM...nope. W&M is in hotwater. Their AD got canned for, you guessed it, unceremoniously firing their head basketball coach. Benson has connections to the state, to W&M, and experience. They don't really give a $iena anymore about athletics.1 point

Is your evidence me telling you who told me? Those who know me on this board, know I would not post the information unless it was true. And they know why I have some info. And so much more I still won't post because I just can't as its too personal. I have had so much of this information for years that I have held onto, with hopes Benson would not get his way. Now that he has, I'm ready to unload what I can, for those who can't due to their ties to the coaching staff and UA staff.1 point

And finally, I will go out and say it: BENSON HAS ONE FOOT OUT THE DOOR. He is in the running for William and Mary. I can't wait until the public records request comes out...1 point
-
Ok, let's play numbers. I don't count this season (freaking nightmare) and I don't count his first four because one was an interim, and the next three he was handcuffed in building a program by both admissions (believe me, I know deep details on this one) and the 5/8 rule. So, in the 15 years since--admittedly good and bad years--he has gone 300 and 195, or 20-13 per season, with 5 NCAA appearances (once, every three years average). He has had 26 All-Academic kids in that time. He also had the unforeseen nightmare of the last three years with the Cremo and Nichols sudden departure....b1 point

I have also heard that Benson has told staff "UA is a Football School".. and he started saying that when he first got here...1 point
-
There is NO gun jumping. Benson TOLD staff he did not like Brown for years. He TOLD them he was going to fire him. Brown has a clause in his contract that does not allow him to talk to people about this type of thing. That is why you'll neve hear him say it. Many inside UA tried to warn Havidan about Benson and what he was up to. The scoreboard was all the Foundation..that had NOTHING to do with Benson. If anything Benson has hurt the Foundation and they have to clean up after him, like today.... Again this is the frustration. So many people know the real behind the scene dumpster1 point

Yes. He's a pencil pushing administrator. An athletic director is a salesperson. He has ZERO sales skills.1 point
-
His #1 job description is to build a budget to keep us competitive. Full Stop. if he can't, he should be replaced. Donations have been higher at a miniscule level. The $10 million donation was worked by the general development department, not lead by the Athletic Department. It's a not so very secret fact. He's done nothing.1 point
-
As one of the admitted leaders of the time to move on bandwagon, I am pleased to see that they decided to shift gears, however, it is not without sadness and a bit of "i hope this is the right move" as it's never easy to see a pillar of the community replaced who did take us from nothing to something. Kudos to what Will has accomplished on and off the court. Ideally this ends up as an Andy Reid/Eagles situation where they both ended up with Super Bowls after their split (although the Eagles are currently in far worse shape)1 point

This has been corroborated with a bunch of other reports...the end of an era. There will be plenty of time to discuss why, how and now what. Coach Brown will always be remembered as a legend and I thank him and his family for the immeasurable contributions to the UA program. This will take a while to process.1 point

Women lead almost all the way to beat UNH 49-43. On to Orono next Sunday. As an aside, in the "Boy, do I feel old" category, Junior Payton Graber just broke the Schalmont girls' scoring record. Her father is Jason Graber, captain of the '94 team that went to the Division III Elite Eight. The record was previously held by Kelly Paolino, captain of the '99 UA women's team.1 point
