I've been dormant here for quite a while, I must say that I'm not thrilled about this at all but I know that WB will land on his feet. This however is the last straw for me with MB. I feel like he never made an effort with middle donors and that we were taken for granted as "loyal fans" but our pockets were not deep enough for him. Sad thing is that many members of the Sec 600 crew are now in the position to be giving at a higher level and we are probably going to balk at it. I am excited for Coach Killings and what he brings. I'm beyond happy that at this moment he looks like a great hire. I feel more optimism on the board at this moment than we have had since we still had Cremo and Nichols, we almost beat UVM for the title, and we're about to have 3 aussies who had redshirted and deSousa and Rizzuto about to come in as Freshman. You know, before the 2 stars decided to move on (which I still argue was best for both of them and the right move for them) I know this won't happen anytime in the near future, especially with Benson at the helm, but Brown deserves t8 points

I think the response to this whole pandemic has been what the military refers to as a “clusterf***.” The hyper partisan politics and polarized media coverage have exacerbated everything. Every step or misstep is magnified and used for political advantage. The President runs his mouth when he ought to just shut up. The congressional leadership either remains silent or lies and uses inflammatory language. The so called experts change course on a whim or for a non medical reason. The models and predictions have been horribly wrong. The Gov made some horrible decisions and ridiculous forecasts of8 points

Great optics this week: -You fire the coach that a large portion of the fan base wanted to keep on the day he and his wife are honored by the American Cancer Society for their fundraising efforts. -You announce a college coaching search that'll cost 50-100K on the same day the university announces it has problems with debt. It's only Tuesday but you're really winning the flippin week UAlbany Athletics.7 points

No need to debate. But am very comfortable in my statement. If Coach Brown wanted to trade in and leverage up he could have at several schools NEVER mentioned on this board. I don’t post behind an alias so I can’t and won’t say more, but my take is that he was too Loyal.7 points

Antonio, I am saddened to hear that you have decided to continue your playing career at Towson University. I want to express my appreciation for your efforts on behalf of the UAlbany Men's Basketball Team. In addition, thank you for your service to the community of McKownville Volunteer Fire Department as a Volunteer Fireman. Lastly, I like thank your parents for sharing you with our community. Good luck in your future student-athlete endeavors. Firing a coach while the university is having financial problems probably doesn't put you in a great position in terms of offering more pay to a new coach. That might have been something he should have thought about last week. Firing a coach who was popular in the community and who many alumni/fans wanted to keep probably pissed off and alienated some of your donors. That might have been something he should have thought about last week. It's a fairly open secret that our AD is looking for another job. The game is, the same search firms that place ADs also place coaches. So, by firing6 points

I concur with your assessment .... Mark Benson did the introduction...AAD & Basketball Supervisor Vic C was the moderator...a number of other UAlbany administrators from alumni association, development and sport administration attended likely around 25% of the 30 or on the zoom... When come to the Siena game ... my impression: he thinks his relationship with the Siena coach might help.... he did not mention John D'Argenio's name...Coach Killing stated in diplomatic manner that Siena's all games in the T-U is unacceptable....however he did say both teams need to prove that they are the5 points

My point wasn’t that they hired the coach in order to get the recruit, but that the coach, once hired, can recommend and have some pull in getting, a recruit from his former HS gig.5 points

Nothing changed to me with the events at Marquette. The hire will be judged based on the record during the season. That is presuming nothing deteriorates with the off the court reputation.5 points

I tried to skim through this topic and how its gone way off track in welcoming Coach Killings... I can only add: F&@K $1ENA I get wanting as many people to be there live as possible, and a standing room only TUC is an amazing environment to be in for a mid-major basketball game, but guess what: we could get that environment every other year. A SEFCU arena that is only 2/3rds full is a louder more fun environment in my mind. No reason to ever play them if they wont accept a home and home. If we agree to anything worse than a 1:1 home and home - I don't even want a 1:1:5 points

I reserve the right to invoke the former coach when the names being thrown around are uninspiring retread coaches with losing records. That's all I'm saying (well, not really.) People who wanted a change are getting their way. I also reserve the right to come in here with a flame-thrower if we go to hell or Binghamton. Have to say I think it’s laughable that Coach Brown hasn’t been extended. The results you get at UAlbany in relationship to the budget, facilities and other factors is beyond measure. This does not mean from a coaching perspective it can’t be better, there is always room for growth and improvement. But second guessing a coach is one of the easiest things one can do. Based on what I know and have experienced, Coach Brown’s results far exceed the circumstances. He is likely a victim of his own previous successes. There was an inflection point with the program that the university missed tha5 points

Not optimistic about seeing many games and never really was. In the spring of 2020, some friends who work at a health care provider told me their headquarters would be remote until summer of 2021. That's when life would possibly begin to resemble "normal." If Covid were a plumbing issue, I would listen to plumbers. If Covid were a legal issue, I would listen to lawyers. But it's a health issue so I've listened to people in the health care industry. I also had a client who is younger than me (earlier 40s with no previous health conditions) get Covid. They were in a coma for a month, hospi5 points

Anyone who thinks the statement 'black lives matter' is racist, or is intended to make white people feel sorry for being white, has a fundamental misunderstanding of what the movement is about. Please, let me try to help you understand.... Right now, when you hear "black lives matter' you're interpreting it as "black lives matter more than white/blue/latino/asian lives", which is incorrect. That is *not* what the movement is about, but unfortunately many have been lead to believe this by people who want to delegitimize the movement. The correct way to interpret is: "black lives matte5 points

This is about the teams and their fans. Full stop. Every rivalry such as this one, from low to high major, has a home-and-home...regardless the size of the arena. I have great admiration for CB, but IMHO, the program was getting more than a little "tired" lately...if that's the right word. The first batch of Aussies was great, Sam and Peter were all time greats and Mike was a solid player. This second batch had high hopes, but Lulka has been a disappointment, Healey has a lot of talent and cannot stay healthy and Hank has been pretty much of a dud. The CremoNichols departure, cover, new transfer rules have all had an impact. Stocking the assistant ranks with ex players creates a silo mentality when fresh ideas and blood were much needed. I was/am among those un-happy when Brown left, let go, whatever. I felt and still do, that other than Iati, the entire group of assistant coaches, not Brown should have been let go. Felt with more support from the top [financially & other]; Will would have been the best option to get UA basketball back on track. Obviously, Will was not about to purge his staff and Administration was not about to provide much in assistance. Knew, we would NOT be bringing in a "big" time head coach. With all that said, I'm pretty positive about Killings from what I've read and heard so far. He appears4 points

You're doing better than me because there are a lot of posts here I don't understand. From the language of last week's press release, it sounded like they were hiring a search firm. This week, that doesn't seem to be the case. I never thought they fired Brown to save money. Others may have, I don't know. I'm sure there will be a lot of names thrown around here in the coming weeks. If one of those names had nearly 20 years of D1 coaching experience, a positive career winning percentage, multiple NCAA tournament appearances and ran a clean program I wonder if they'd go to the top4 points

While true (and you and i know how true), that just means the Athletic Director failed at his job to provide the resources. Put simply, what has Benson done that has moved the needle or put Albany through the proverbial next checkpoint since the McElroy days? The AD's job, among other tasks, is to: 1) Manage a department, inclusive of resources; 2) Promote the school; 3) Advance community outreach, town/gown; and 4) Fundraise to ensure that the departments have the resources they need. Track and field, nationally prominent program, doesn't even have a scoreboar4 points

Nineteen years in one place as a head coach is almost unheard of these days. Coach Brown built a program from nothing into something and delivered some incredible memories along the way. He will be in the school’s HOF and probably down the road should be honored in the arena in some way. He was all class and ran a very clean program. This was also a very unique situation in that the coach was able to coach in what was basically his family’s hometown - so we benefited and his family’s quality of life benefited. I am sure every one of us on this board during CB’s tenure became proud to pound our4 points

This has been corroborated with a bunch of other reports...the end of an era. There will be plenty of time to discuss why, how and now what. DP, always the voice of reason. I think everyone, at least in this community, can understand and agree that there are situations where black people are treated differently just because they are black. If our players think they need to kneel in order to unite behind the message to fix that, more power to them! Only thing I ask is that hypocrisy, virtue signaling and other stuff like that stays out of it. Good for our team.4 points

I gotta admit, this stuff used to bother me when it first started with CK. I've done a good deal of soul searching on why and arrived at the conclusion of why should it? These are Americans, exercising their free will and God given right to take a stand. I may not agree with the nuances of the argument or exactly be aligned on the issue (not to say I think there are no problems) but I live and let live on this whole issue. The conversation needs to be had as there is wide division here. That's just me...I'm done (I think)...4 points

So, we grab a win, score a bunch of points and I come here to find a political fire. It's going to be a long friggin winter. While I still do believe that COVID-19 is more than a flu, I will say that my trust in the gubberment has deteriorated considerably, regardless of aisle. CDC/WHO can't seem to agree on guidelines, Cuomo sends thousands of seniors to their death thanks to his nursing home fiasco, we have reports that for every 1 confirmed case there is likely 10 not confirmed but for sure sick, we keep hearing that labs are screwing up results which is leading to false positives or false negatives (which is doing who knows what to the numbers which are then used to dictate policy), protests are allowed to go on4 points

I’d have to see what the plan was and what the infection rates were at the time. If it can be done safely, sure. I was at some games last year where it looked like most of the upper deck was practicing social distancing anyway. The opposite stands are usually sparsely occupied. I’d give it a shot unless it was apparent people were taking unnecessary risks. I still see brain dead a-holes walking around stores without a mask.4 points

For the record, I did approach some of the coaches about this but it was quite a while ago. It was when Bob Ford was coaching. He read the board and then declined, which to be perfectly honest, I understood. With Zoom meetings and twitter, I kind of think the need for a chat with board members has kind of passed. I suspect most people follow the coaches on twitter and some likely interact with them. I'm not sure how much more would be gained from a live chat, maybe that's just me. Over the last few years I've wondered if message boards themselves are becoming obsolete. Many of the fa3 points

He's a pencil pusher, at it's finest...and empty suit at the helm. Honestly, if it weren't for Cannata, Vives, Gattuso, Marr, Brown...and others...he'd have a shyte department. He's lucked into fabulous coaches. No disrespect to Lucious, great guy...but he's not remotely experienced to run this program. Not a chance. I mean, if we are going that route, and I can understand Benson not wanting to keep Iati if he wants a clean break from the current staff...why not go after Brent Wilson. As one of the admitted leaders of the time to move on bandwagon, I am pleased to see that they decided to shift gears, however, it is not without sadness and a bit of "i hope this is the right move" as it's never easy to see a pillar of the community replaced who did take us from nothing to something. Kudos to what Will has accomplished on and off the court. Ideally this ends up as an Andy Reid/Eagles situation where they both ended up with Super Bowls after their split (although the Eagles are currently in far worse shape)3 points

Ultimately if he's here long enough he will be judged on his decision. The move to extend Gattuso has paid off in the short term. Having said that...we need to be competitive with top of the AE and if we are being fair we aren't and haven't been for a while. Point is Brown fair or not has given Benson an opening. But count me as concerned, the guy has some bad hires and can't do simple things like put in a bag policy. In fact I'd fire him before Brown. I'm of the opinion that Benson is fairly well insulated from criticism and I'm not sure why. The guy is kind of a complete zero.3 points

It’s impossible to keep politics out of this because it’s an election year and the country is in the midst of what some are calling a cultural civil war. Although it would be disappointing, barring a miracle drug/vaccination/divine intervention, I don’t think it will be safe to have ANY contact sports with crowds for the foreseeable future. While they may start out ok and have reams of safety rules it will take only a small slip up to upset the plan.
