From Wednesday's Times-Union:

Albany hires NLL’s 1st female scout Shonly Wallace played one season at UAlbany

BY MARK SINGELAIS

The Albany FireWolves announced the hiring Tuesday of former University at Albany women’s lacrosse player Shonly Wallace as the first female scout in the history of the National Lacrosse League. Wallace, an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, will also serve as the FireWolves’ college scout. Wallace played one season as a graduate student at UAlbany in 2023 and worked as a Great Danes coaching assistant last season.

“Shonly has a unique passion for the game as well as high-end experience in the indoor and outdoor game,” FireWolves general manager and coach Glenn Clark said in a news release. “Her recent participation in the World Indoor Championships has her well positioned to support our staff as our NCAA Scout.” Wallace, who is from Mission, British Columbia, played on the Canadian national team at the first Women’s World Box Lacrosse Championship in Utica. Canada won a silver medal.

"I’ve always known deep down that I wanted to work in the NLL and so the fact that this day has come is quite an amazing thing,” Wallace said in the news release. “The FireWolves are leading the way with promoting this growth and supporting women’s box lacrosse. Boy or girl, there’s no limit to how much passion you can have for the sport you love.” The FireWolves open the season Nov. 30 against the Saskatchewan Rush at MVP Arena.

Wallace played at Stony Brook and Oregon before transferring to UAlbany to finish her college career. She had 51 goals and made the all-America East first team while helping the Great Danes win the conference title. UAlbany upset Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Denver in the second round.

During her one season as a UAlbany coaching assistant, Wallace worked with the offense and the goaltenders. She operated sideline replay during practice and games along with traditional practice and game film. “My approach is to provide the FireWolves with an edge through my knowledge and resources in various disciplines of the game,” Wallace said. “With more Americans contending to be in the league and many Canadians attending universities in the U.S., college lacrosse is an important aspect to consider."
