This is Rhode Island's Sophie Phillips Senior home game; she is the twin sister of UAlbany's Lilly Phillips.

 

Sophie's last visit to the Broadview Center was in March to watch her sister play.

 

This is a much better Home Opener.

Women lead almost all the way for a 10-pt win. Lily wins the battle of the twins. But team is noticeably smaller than the last few years, I could see problems against bigger opponents

I think the main takeaway here is that the team is rebuilt, has three new starters and was effective in taking down an A-10 team right out of the box. It shows what good recruiting and coaching can do.

Lots of contributors last night from new and returning players. Good to see. I like the offensive potential here. A number of new players attacking the basket. Last years team struggled quite often to score 50 points, and got little or nothing off the bench. Also, 11 fast break points last night was a refreshing change.

I agree that lack of overall height could be an issue. R.I. did get 17 off. rebounds! BUT they did beat a much taller A-10 team, so who knows? I noticed that 2 players were injured and DNP. One frosh and the local transfer from New Hampshire, Bella Stuart. So when they return the rotation could go even deeper. IMHO, #13 Martina Borrellas, is going to be a very good player. All in all, a great start to the season.

URI got 17 offensive rebounds partly because they missed 36 shots (plus a number of free throws), Albany had 6 on only  25 misses. The total rebounds was only 33-30, which is closer than it felt.

RI did shoot poorly, and just 10 for 18 on FT’s. Agree on the rebounding. Hopefully a good omen going forward.
