Couple of side notes:

  • I will be interested in seeing how many Siena fans actually purchased tickets, beyond the contracted 300 seats.  Tickets to the general public was deliberately held up in attempt to sell tickets for the Vermont and Stony Brook MBB games and to limit the number of Siena fans.  Siena was requesting additional blocks of tickets since late summer.
  • Will this rivalry game continue after this year? Siena got a taste of their own medicine in seat location and ticket allocation.
  • Will the question: How much better are both teams when compared to last year's teams
  • Last thought:  This game is about pride and will not determine the overall success of each team's season....really, what is a piece of $#^**@ hardware worth vs a trip to the NCAA MBB Tournament.

A lot of noise on-line and on the $iena board about the cost of the tickets being $60 each plus $20 for parking. Definitely feels high to me, but the arena holds under 4000 people, and its only a couple bucks more than the crappy seats I had at MVP last season. Let's hope it is a sell out, its mostly UA fans, and the most electric environment we have felt in that building since the renovation.

Well, the general public price is high so the UAlbany season ticket holders could benefit from a low price.

This was UAlbany Sports Adm plan to keep season ticket holders happy.

Siena fans are learning a lesson for something we had to deal with for how many years in a row.

I'm not complaining about the price as a season ticket holder. You never hear my complain about prices on this board, I'm normally the one justifying them and ok with them raising. I was just relaying what I have read and seen.

I think it's a little high for 2 mid major programs coming off bad years, but if they sell then that's great. My only fear is that the arena isn't full. If it doesn't sell out and students don't take all the empty seats to keep it loud and fun, then it was a waste.

On line, it doesn't look like many seats are avaliable.  My seat will be filled. A buddy who sits in my section texted me and now has my ticket. Been 8 years since I last saw them play.(how many of their coaches did I totally miss) Hopefully this new coach can be properly beaten. Will try to get the radio broadcast on the ride from Seattle to Vancouver Saturday after the islanders game.

From Saturday's Times-Union:

Danes, Saints vie for Cup

Siena, UAlbany men’s rivalry game set for Saturday

BY MICHAEL KELLY ALBANY — Only three players who started in the 2023 Albany Cup remain on the University at Albany and Siena College men’s basketball program rosters. UAlbany’s Amar’e Marshall, right, dribbles past Siena’s Bralyn Smith in last year’s Albany Cup. They are two of only three starters that are still playing in the Capital Region this season. And Siena’s Marcus Jackson, one of those three, started this past season’s matchup for the Great Danes.

So this weekend’s Albany Cup game provides another reminder of how college sports have changed in recent years, as player movement becomes more frequent and less encumbered during the transfer portal era. In all, only eight players that played in the 2023 Albany Cup are back for Saturday’s 7 p.m. rivalry rekindling at Broadview Center.

Coach Dwayne Killings, whose UAlbany program will host the Albany Cup for only the second time, said it’s been an emphasis this week to help his players gain an appreciation for the rivalry, which Siena leads 11-8. “We’re trying to teach them what the Cup means,” Killings said. “When you bring in a bunch of new guys, they don’t totally know what it means to represent that.”

One of Siena’s new Albany Cup participants is coach Gerry McNamara, the former Syracuse star. He spoke Thursday of how his rivalry games as a college player included that “players butted heads” due to their familiarity from playing each other year after year, but that games like this weekend’s are now more squarely focused on rivalries between schools — and their supporters. “Most of the people that I’ve seen in the community since (Tuesday’s) American game have all said the same thing, ‘Hey, go get them Saturday night,’ ” McNamara said. “Or, you know, someone might say, ‘Hey, we’re going to get you guys Saturday night.’ ” UAlbany (2-1) and Siena (3-0) each bring a winning record into this year’s Albany Cup, which has only happened one prior time in the series.

The Saints won their first two games in overtime before topping American 74-66 this past Tuesday, while the Great Danes pushed their record above .500 with an 87-73 win Wednesday at Dartmouth. Guard play has led each team. Siena’s top two scorers are junior college transfers Justice Shoats (24 points per game) and Major Freeman (15.7), while Alcorn State transfer Byron Joshua (16.7) leads UAlbany.

The Great Danes are also expected to get back guard Amar’e Marshall for this weekend’s game. Marshall missed the past two games with a thumb injury, but was the star of this past year’s Albany Cup with 33 points in an 86-51 UAlbany win. Killings said what impressed him regarding Siena was the different ways the Saints have managed to win their opening games and how McNamara has fostered a winning attitude. “When you look at a program, you want to see belief — and his kids believe, and that’s the first step to growing,” Killings said. With the Great Danes coming off an 87-point performance, McNamara said a focus for the Saints is to keep UAlbany’s attack from getting into a rhythm. “We’ve got to get back on defense against these guys.

Athletically, their ability to stretch you in the open court is elite,” McNamara said. Brendan Coyle, a Niskayuna native who is Siena’s third-leading scorer this season, said the Albany Cup is “one of the games of the year” for the programs. The 6-foot-7 junior is 1-1 in Albany Cup games and said he’s communicated to his newer teammates the importance of the rivalry. “It’s special,” Coyle said. “We’re expecting a great atmosphere Saturday, but we’ve just got to look at it as another game — prepare for it as any other game — and go out ready to battle.”

UAlbany’s Joshua echoed that need to be prepared ahead of what should be a lively atmosphere around the contest. “We’ve got to pay attention to every little detail because it all matters,” Joshua said. “One inch will cost you the game.” McNamara said there’s a “different emotion” around this game for the players. That’s the point, after all, of a rivalry. “They understand that and feel it,” McNamara said. “I think it’s my job to make sure I bring them back down. Don’t let them get too high.” Killings said that’s his role, too. “You can’t get emotionally overwhelmed by the environment and the emotion of the game,” Killings said. “Focus on executing. Focus on competing. Focus on our game plan. That’s it."
