Soooooo ... Disappointed by the Times Union Coverage of the Game

Recommended Posts

great victory last evening by the UA men over siena in the 2024 'Albany Cup' matchup ... I had cancelled my hardcopy Mon.-Sat. delivery of the TU in favor of a digital subscription, but still like to have a hardcopy for Sun. reading ... I was looking forward to coverrage of the game when I awoke this morning ... ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ... I didn't expect a front page headline, but the TU regularly runs micro.clips across the top of the front page to draw readers 'inside' - today: "Spaces: Real Estate Guide" + "Capital Region Gives" + "Unwind - An Interview with 'Wicked' author, area native Gregory Maguire" + "Business - How a prison became a business park." ... ZERO about what many consider to be the most significant local college sports matchup/rivalry ... I then incorrectly assumed that I would see a headline at the top of the sports section announcing the Great Danes winning a back/forth/competitive game ... No! ... top headline: "Averill Park Prevails - Team tops BH-BL to claim program's first Section II Class A Title" (high school football!) ... then, "above the fold," you see a photo of Siena's Justice Shoats in a dominant position over multiple UAlbany players ... small print above the image 'UAlbany 70, Siena 60' ... the coresponding article headlined, "Great Danes Keep the Cup" (standard print, "below the fold," though slightly larger font) ... in bold print other local sports on the front page of the section: "Averill Park prevails" (high school football) + "RPI reclaims Shoes trophy" + "Bethlehem girls dominate for  'A' crown - H.S. Cross Country" ... a second sports front page 'Albany Cup' game photo captioned, "Siena's Marcus Jackson drives in front of UAlbany's Amar'e Marshall.  Jackson had 17 points Saturday" ... only one other photo "related" to the game ("only not" ... a picture of Justin Neely driving to the basket against Oneonta (a file photo with a nearly empty Broadview Arena in the background) ... others have been critical of the Times Union in previous posts/years gone by ... I now join the chorus ... it may be time for me to put the final nail in the coffin of my TU subscription ... pi$$ poor journalism ... the WTEN Ch. 10 sports dept. certainly appears to also be in the pocket of LCC (terrible coverage of the event) ... I again, stress that UA alums, fans, students, sponsors, and season ticket holders lobby the UA administration to demand 'home and home' sites for any renewal of the series contract  ... anything less than fair terms is negligence/cowardice/malpractice ... solid win last night, great atmosphere ... wondeful mid.major DI basketball ... congratulations to the team, coaches, and administration/event staff for their efforts, product, and victory ... long season ahead - "Lets Go Danes!"

'Home and home" or "home and home and neutral (not at MVP)" or nothing.

No 2 for 1.  No home and home and neutral at MVP.

There is no reason to play every year at MVP. I'd rather have another d3 on the schedule than LCC at MVP every year.

At this point, make it 2 for 1 with two years at Broadview and 1 at MVP. Hell let's do it at Broadview for the next 17 straight years to bring the game in balance.

Times Union goes to print early; I was surprised the game results made the paper.

A quickly written article with little or no editorial review.

Agreed, they probably had the page composed and formatted, then they plugged in the game story, tho they might’ve picked a better picture

"Siena junior Major Freeman made a 3-pointer with 11:09 left to put his club up 36-35.  From there, though, UAlbany made a gaudy 12 of 16 shots and Neely provided an interior toughness that was the difference in the game. The 6-foot-6 forward, who tore his left ACL in the 2022 Albany Cup and barely played the past two seasons, registered 21 points and eight rebounds, with many of his made baskets coming through contact in the paint."   - Michael Kelly, Times Union

there were many contributors to the win on Saturday night, but none larger than Mr. Neely ... Absolutely Dominant! ... great to see him play at the level he did post.injury ... continued success going forward to him/team
