I actually did send an e-mail, several months ago, inquiring about the timeline. Herbst was here, so it was a while ago. I never received anything back, not even an acknowledgement of receipt.

Hmm that sucks. Too bad there isn't a phone number to call they would be forced to respond haha.

Thank for the links...especially the first one.

The explanation of permanent vs. interim was comical at best. I think we all know the difference between the two.....ie. one is temporary and the other is permanent. That wasn't the question....interesting read anyways.

Again, thank you for the links.

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit reading the comment someone made to the ASP story: "bring Karen Hitchkock back".

Make that two of us, though it poses the question of what is worse: a subpar president or years of no president. I seriously don't know the answer since hypothetically bringing back Hitchcock (or hiring a Hitchcock type) would set the school back even further than the Kermit tragedy and Herbst walking.

It was between "acting" and "interim", not permanent and interim.

Well, at least we can't be accused of not knowing (we as in people who have worked with her in some capacity) what she was about.

Granted, she brought some solid things to the school...and did show up to football games...but I was not a huge fan of hers. Ironically, I liked Swygert though others did not.

BTW. She gave the absolute worst post-game congratulatory speeches ever......but she did show up, so I'll give her that.

But I'll never forgive her for building that g-d sculpture studio. That $5 million should have gone to starting the funding for our stadium and we should be in a much different position right now. That's my opinion and its based on the fact that UAlbany is not an art school. I like art as much as the next guy, but sorry. Not an art school.

Ironically, I liked Swygert though others did not.

Swygert is also available, he's 'retiring' in June under some pressure

from Wikipedia

"In April 2007 the head of the faculty senate called for the ouster of Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert, saying that the school is in a state of crisis and it was time to end “an intolerable condition of incompetence and dysfunction at the highest level.” This came on the heels of several criticisms of Howard University and its management. A National Science Foundation audit condemned Howard’s management of several federal research grants"

"The Division of Nursing faced losing its accreditation and being placed on probation for a second time because of the program's deficiencies. In Division of Allied Health Science, Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant program are also on probational accreditation status.[23] In addition, the residency programs at Howard University Hospital received a much-publicized unfavorable assessment by the Accrediting Council of Graduate Medical Education"

Recieved an all-students email regarding senior appointments to UA...so it isn't directly related to the president search, but I didn't want to create a whole nother thread just for this email.. so this seemed like the semi-most logical place :)

--------------------------

To the Members of the University at Albany Community:

I am pleased to announce three senior administrative appointments.

First, I have asked Lynn Videka to continue her service as Vice

President for Research for the next two years. Since 2004, Dr. Videka

has provided outstanding leadership, vision, and commitment in building

our institution's research portfolio and mission of excellence as a

leading public research university. During Dr. Videka's tenure, the

University's research productivity and national and international

reputation have grown significantly. It gives me great pleasure to

reappointment Dr. Videka for a two-year term through June 30, 2010.

Second, I have invited Christine Bouchard to serve as the Vice President

for Student Success. A twenty-five year veteran of the University at

Albany, Ms. Bouchard took over as Interim Vice President for Student

Success on November 1, 2007. She has had an extraordinary career at the

University, and has demonstrated the leadership, experience, and

dedication necessary for the Division of Student Success to provide the

critical foundation that supports student engagement and learning. I am

delighted to appoint Ms. Bouchard as the Vice President for Student

Success.

Finally, I have asked Edelgard Wulfert to serve as the Dean of the

College of Arts and Sciences for a three-year term. Since September

2007, Dr. Wulfert has been serving as Acting Dean of the College of Arts

and Sciences. In this new leadership role, she has quickly earned the

respect and confidence of her colleagues throughout the College of Arts

and Sciences and, indeed, across the campus, providing capable and

stable stewardship in successfully leading the University's largest

academic unit. It gives me great pleasure to appoint Dr. Wulfert as

Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences through August 31, 2011.

I am confident that each of these senior administrators will continue to

provide the strategic vision and dedication necessary to successfully

lead our University into the future.

On behalf of the entire University at Albany community, please join me

in congratulating Vice President Videka, Vice President Bouchard, and

Dean Wulfert on their new appointments.

Sincerely yours,

George M. Philip

Interim President

Just got this email...........

As we finish the semester, I'd like to take this opportunity to update

you and the campus community on the ongoing search process to select the

next President for the University at Albany.

Throughout its tenure, the Search Committee has worked vigorously to

identify and recruit Presidential candidates of excellence. Our

standards and scrutiny have been appropriately high and rigorous. We've

engaged in extensive review and outreach to develop as deep a candidate

pool as possible. We have met extensively on the phone and in person,

often on one if not two weekend days. We've interviewed a significant

number of candidates, in certain instances twice to assess their

suitability and viability.

While the Committee's energy and commitment has been one of constant

resolve, our search has been complicated by several extraordinary

challenges, including: a respected, but still interim Chancellor, the

resignation of Governor Spitzer and a budget environment that poses

extraordinary challenges for Public Higher Education.

Notwithstanding these challenges, we have received a broad based and

sincere interest from candidates seeking to be the next President of the

University at Albany. However, at this juncture, while we have

candidates for consideration, the pool does not meet the quantitative

and qualitative criteria required to present to the Campus. After

careful deliberation and with the support of the Chairman of the Board

of Trustees, Carl Hayden, the Committee has unanimously decided that it

would be best to continue and resume in earnest the search after a new

Chancellor has been selected. We agree with Chairman Hayden that having

a Chancellor in place is vital to our process. A world-class Chancellor

will provide stable and dynamic leadership for SUNY. Perhaps more

importantly for us, the new Chancellor will be a magnet for recruiting

excellent Presidential candidates to our campus.

In the meantime, and as the search continues, George Philip will

continue his extraordinary service as Interim President. I'd like to

thank the search committee for their dedication and devotion on this

extremely important mission and thank the faculty, administration and

staff at the University for their patience and understanding through

this process. We will continue to keep the campus community updated on

our progress. Thank you.
