Nanotech and the stadium have nothing to do with each other. Different money sources. Is there a reason this University cannot handle more than one project at a time?

Three words: Diversion of funds. Nanotech can wait for money so Football can get their new stadium.

And to the person who called my observation "offensive", the truth is offensive. Had Kermit not gone to the ocean, he could still be alive today.

Phyllis Hall for UAlbany President!

You'll all be shocked that I'm saying let's wait and see but... let's wait and see. I'm a huge college football fan in a huge college football state. I want that stadium. I want our football program on par with every other state but... let's not throw in the towel yet guys. This is important to the school. It'll get done. If Spitzer wants a flagship school he'll realize that football is part of the formula. SUNY needs to attract top students and those students can choose between Michigan, Cal, Virginia etc. It's about attracting students. Quality of life and name recognition, in addition to academics, will get those kids through the door. Spitzer was talking about other sources of income for SUNY, well branding is that source. I saw a UGA decal on a dust buster at the Wal-Mart the other day. They'll put UGA on anything... and it'll sell. How much cash is all that crap generating? The stadium will happen if leaders step up and make it happen.

By the way, I love all sports but let's be practical... football has a potential much larger than any other sport. Tailgating, parties and bon fires attract otherwise uninterested students.

Keep the faith... but I do have to agree a pubic appeal might bring in a few bucks.

Go Danes!

Given that Spitzer is a downstater and downstate New York is the hub of college sports apathy, I doubt it. Most people here would agree with me.

OK, so here's a quick solution for the $$:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Say we need $60mm.

We can get $1.7mm per year by imposing a $100 fee to student surcharges. ($100 x 17,000). Over ten years that's $17mm.

Once plans are actually released I bet you'd get about $3mm from donations (not counting naming rights).

That's $20mm.

Additionally, you can count on $5mm for stadium naming rights and about another $3mm from various naming rights (lockerroom, VIP boxes, etc....) Shoot name the parking lot after somebody if they want.

That's $28mm.

Now, lets get the City and County of Albany on board for about $5mm as it is a community based stadium.

That's $33mm.

Now comes the state for $27mm. A lot of money, but I think they can cough it up. Anybody know how much the State gave to Stony Brook for Lavalle Stadium (total cost was $22mm for the stadium)?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not fail proof by any means. Whiny students will do what they do best...whine. But c'mon...seriously...$100 a year is far from over the top. And the state may be a stretch. But hey what a good topic for conversation instead of complaining that nobody is doing anything.

Any thoughts?

The stadium needs to be built NOW!! I don't care if all the eggs aren't in the basket, build it now and screw any consequences. I'm ashamed by McElroy and his lack of action and all else at the school--the other programs, the dorms, nanotech--should take a backseat to a new stadium, period, end of discussion.

I wish Kermit never went swimming, then the ground would have been broken. Herbst is oblivious, and that sad.

I'm as big a UA sports fan as anybody. That said, there is no way that nano, other programs or anyhting affecting the academic realm of the university should take a back seat to a new stadium. Also I don't get how you can knock Dr. McElroy. The man has done a remarkable job. Yeah, I thought the stadium plan would go a little smoother and I hope it gets built Monday; but not at the expense of something else.

Dane Pound - I wholeheartedly agree with UA MA 2000 that this quote should be deleted from the site.....

In my opinion everyone has the right to disagree with the administration and what's going on but this is (sick) over the top.

The way it is stated is quite worrisome and scary to me.

I find it very offensive and don't think it's appropriate for this board.

Care to elaborate? How is stating the obvious worrisome to you? Won't change my viewpoint.

NO!!!

But I do respect that you have the right to your opinion

If you think the statement is just stating the obvious we're just at different ends of the spectrum.

Well for the first thing, Herbst (from what I know) is NOT ANTI-ATHLETICS...she is pro. Still, w/o a President title, she cant do much in the way of workign sponsors for huge donations.

Just a few thoughts, reading this thread.

- scrabble, you might think you are simply stating the obvious but I'm with everyone else here. My mouth kind of just hung open when I read your comment. It might be stating the obvious, and sure had Mr. Hall not gone on a vacation he might still be here, but the manner in which you made your point is at best in poor taste and I actually find very very offensive. I don't advocate for censorship but I would hope you have the mental fortitude to recognize the callous manner in which you made that point and edit it, if not then I hope DP breaks out the censor stick.

- In NO way should the University put aside it's core objective in improving and educating our society not to mention be a leader in nano research for the sake of a football stadium. The work being done at the research center as well as the upcoming move of Semetech has the potential to transform the CD. Retarding the growth of the University and it's core function in society for the sake of a FOOTBALL stadium would be beyond foolish. Remember, the football team exists because of the University, the University does not exist because of the football team.

- When I came to this board a few years back, I've been waiting with anticipation of this stadium being built. I'm sad to report that I see almost zero progress other then a rendering of the stadium being released. I will continue to patiently wait and hope that it gets built not to mention give what funds I have available to support this initiative but I think it's reasonable to assume that this things won't be build until 2013-14. The dragging of feet has gone on for years and there is no reason to think it will end any time soon. I don't see anyone in government talking about this initiative, I don't see the city of Albany pushing it, in fact it's not on anyones mind or lips evidently outside of this board and Dr. McElroy. When we hear the governor or the mayor pushing it that is when we'll get some action on this. The convention center is all the rage at the moment.

Just to piggyback on your post, I think the only way this project is going to happen is with some MAJOR support from private sources. Waiting for funding from the State of New York is like waiting for Fidel Castro to die. We could be saying "any day now" for the next 10 years. I'd be surprised if McElroy wasnt making some headway in that regard, but I just wish they made a better effort at marketing the proposals and encouraging people/alumni/corporations to donate to the cause. if it wasnt for this board, I would know very little about 'Project 2010'.
