Defense carries West boys past Columbus, 43-38

By NICK PETAROS, Courier Sports Writer

WATERLOO --- Cold shooting and turnover woes have derailed Waterloo West teams of the past, but this year's group is too busy enjoying the present.

Despite its share of offensive struggles, the Wahawks ground out a 43-38 win over neighbor Waterloo Columbus Saturday night at Oppold Gymnasium. In doing so West also matched last season's win total as it improved to 3-1.

"It wasn't the prettiest win in the world, but a win is a win," coach Courtney Henderson said. "I don't recall West High getting out to a 3-1 start in a long time so I'm proud of our kids. We didn't play the greatest tonight, but we found a way to win."

The matchup that pitted former AAU teammates against each other got off to a sluggish start.

Columbus mixed in a variety of defensive looks and held West to 5-of-15 shooting with 10 first-half turnovers. The Sailors weren't able to take advantage as they hit just 4-of-19 first-half shots.

Defensively, West's interior combination of TreyVonn Wright and John Puk kept the Wahawks in the game with their presence alone playing a major factor.

"They pose a challenge for us and I think they had our guys a little intimidated with their size," Columbus coach John Holmes said. "We were going to the basket and changing our shots up instead of just going into their body and drawing the foul."

Behind an 8-of-8 effort from the free throw line, West led 18-10 at intermission. With as many dunks as an episode of SportsCenter the Wahawks extended their lead to 14 points at the end of the third quarter.

Wright flushed down an alley-oop inbound pass from Max Shower and Puk answered with back-to-back slams during a 6-0 third quarter run. Wright finished with a game-high 15 points, while Puk added 11.

"Our success really has been getting it into the posts," Wright said. "Every night you can't make a jump shot so really we just try to get it in and get some lay-ups and easy buckets. That how our offense is designed."

Trailing 41-29 with 1:40 remaining, Columbus finished the game on a 9-2 run but by then it was too late. Eric Knipp led the Sailors with 11 points and James Humpal hit a pair of second-half treys to finish with 10.

"When you hold a team to 43 points most of the time you're going to win," Holmes said. "We just couldn't put the ball in the basket and that was the difference."

After taking their share of lumps last season, Wright and his West High teammates are pleased with the early turnaround but not content.

"Right now it means a lot, but at the same time we want more," Wright said. "We just keep pushing it and giving it a strong effort every game.

"We've just picked up the intensity. We're listening more and working as a team."

WATERLOO -- Following Friday night's game with Cedar Falls, members of the Waterloo West boys basketball team stuck around Robert Siddens Gymnasium to autograph posters for several elementary-school aged kids in attendance.

After rallying from behind to defeat metro rival Cedar Falls in a 33-31 barn-burner, it's safe to say the Wahawks picked up a few new fans.

West recovered from a 21-11 halftime deficit by opening the third quarter on a 10-0 run. Guard Max Shower netted a 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining in the third to give the Wahawks their first lead 25-24. With the score tied at 29, sophomore guard Trent Washington drove inside for a pair of layups and West's defense held up for the win.

After the Tigers' Kyle Soldwisch put back a rebound to pull his team within two, Cedar Falls 4-2 (3-1 MVC) had five opportunities to either tie or take the lead in the final 1:42. The Tigers missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw, turned the ball over twice and missed their final two shots in the last 11 seconds, including a desperation 3-pointer as time expired.

Soldwisch paced Cedar Falls with a game-high 14 points.

West 4-2 (2-2 MVC) was led by seven points from Washington and John Puk. TrayVonn Wright added six points, while Ryan Edwards and Trashon Montgomery finished with five apiece.

Wahawks rally past Tigers

By NICK PETAROS, Courier Sports Writer

WATERLOO --- Following Friday night's game with Cedar Falls, members of the Waterloo West boys' basketball team stuck around Robert Siddens Gymnasium to autograph posters for local elementary school kids.

After rallying from a 12-point deficit to earn a rare win over their metro rival, 33-31, it's safe to say the Wahawks picked up a few new fans.

"It's big," senior guard Ryan Edwards said following his first career victory over the Tigers. "We worked hard for it, and it was a great comeback win.

"We were patient in the first half and then we'd force something. So we just stayed patient, waited for it to open up and were more aggressive. ... We all came together at halftime and were upset. We decided that we were going to make something happen that second half."

West recovered from a 21-11 halftime deficit, opening the third quarter on a 10-0 run. Guard Max Shower netted a 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining in the third to give the Wahawks their first lead, 25-24.

After being held to 3-for-15 shooting in an opening half that saw Cedar Falls' suffocating interior defense jump-start its team to an early 17-5 edge, the Wahawks' guards helped spark a third-quarter rally.

"I just thought that their perimeter guys made a few shots," Cedar Falls coach Tom Bardal said of West, which made nine of 17 shots in the second half. "We didn't make any adjustments at halftime, because when you give up 11 points in the first half, you really don't need to."

Playing on a team with two players taller than 6-foot-7, it was 5-9 sophomore Trent Washington who was the difference for West.

With the score tied at 29, he drove inside, converted a pair of layups and the Wahawk defense held up for the win.

"Those were some really big plays," Washington said. "We just had to work hard and we worked as a team. All I was thinking about was getting that 'W.'"

Cedar Falls --- held to 10 second-half points --- had its share of opportunities down the stretch as West went scoreless over the final 2:29.

The Tigers' Kyle Soldwisch put back a rebound for two of his game-high 14-points to pull his team within two, 33-31. Cedar Falls (4-2, 3-1 MVC) had five chances to either tie or take the lead in the final 1:42. The Tigers missed their final two shots in the last 11 seconds, including a desperation 3-pointer as time expired.

Ball security was also an issue. Cedar Falls was plagued by 15 turnovers and a 3-for-9 effort from the charity stripe.

"I thought our intensity was still good in the second half, but it just came down to turnovers," Bardal said. "When you play a game where you don't get a lot of (shot) attempts, you've got to make sure each time down the court you get a good look.

"When you turn it over that many times in a low-possession game, it's going to be hard to win."

West (4-2, 2-2) was led by seven points from Washington and John Puk. TrayVonn Wright added six points, while Ryan Edwards and Trashon Montgomery finished with five each.

"I'm so proud of my kids," third-year coach Courtney Henderson said after his team doubled last year's win total. "Anytime you can get a win in a rivalry game, especially against a quality opponent like Cedar Falls that knows how to win in all the sports they play, its a big win for us.

"I can't be more proud of my kids. We have a long way to go this season, but at the same time it's a huge, huge win for us."

West boys corral Mustangs

DUBUQUE --- Ryan Edwards only scored six points, but the timing made all the difference. Edwards and teammate Max Shower hit shot after shot to push the Wahawks to a 46-45 overtime victory over Dubuque Hempstead in overtime Thursday.

Shower hit a late 3-point basket to tie the game, and Edwards added one of his own to force the game into overtime. Proving that this was no fluke, Edwards hit another 3 in crunch time to win the game.

Josh Lund logged a game-high 15 points for Hempstead, while West's TrayVonn Wright added seven points and 14 rebounds for the Wahawks.

West improved to 7-2 overall with the win.

West suffers first home defeat

By RYAN POTHAST, Courier Sports Writer

WATERLOO --- After four straight road games, Waterloo West was looking forward to returning to the friendly confines of Siddens Gymnasium, where the Wahawks had been perfect this season.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson spoiled the homecoming, though, with a 59-40 Mississippi Valley Conference win Tuesday that dropped West to 7-4.

"We just didn't shoot the ball very well tonight," said West coach Courtney Henderson. "This was our first loss at home this season, and I'm a bit disappointed.

West shot just 35 percent from the field and didn't manage a double-digit scoring total in any quarter until the fourth.

"I have to give Jefferson credit --- they played an outstanding defensive game," said Henderson. "They played great defense, and we couldn't hit our open shots. It was just one of those nights."

The J-Hawks (8-5) shot 56 percent from the field, despite being limited to only 32 shots by the Wahawks' defense.

"West did a great job defensively against us," said Jefferson coach Stuart Ordman. "They made it tough on us to get any looks at the basket."

When the J-Hawks did find looks at the basket, they came from the hot hand of Cole Kramer, who hit four 3-pointers, and sophomore Jarrod Uthoff, who ended the night with 13 points.

"Our young kids stepped up their game for us tonight. They did a great job against a team that has the potential to be very dangerous," Ordman said.

Henderson was proud of his team's defensive presence on the court.

"We played a great defensive game tonight," said Henderson "We gave them some tough looks and did an excellent job on their main guy, Chad Underwood (13 points).

"We are still 7-4 in a great conference, and now we need to rebound against a couple of rivalry games this weekend."

West will play Cedar Falls Friday and Waverly-Shell Rock Saturday.

Wirth's hot hand burns Wahawks late

By MATT COSS, Courier Sports Writer

CEDAR FALLS — Just like the last Waterloo West-Cedar Falls boys’ basketball game three weeks ago, every point was a challenge Friday night.

Until Andrew Wirth took over.

The Cedar Falls junior guard scored 13 fourth-quarter points, including two 3-pointers in a 45-second span, as the Tigers avenged their 33-31 loss to the Wahawks on Jan. 9 with a 51-41 win at the Cedar Falls gymnasium.

"He’s got that ability to get it going real quick," Cedar Falls coach Tom Bardal said. "I thought it was a real credit to the other guys that found him. We’ve seen him do that in a couple other games this year.

"It was definitely a difference-maker to see him step up and make shots."

Wirth finished with a game-high 20 points for the Tigers (7-5), who just 33 percent from the fieled.

"I thought we came out and played pretty good defensively, but we just lost track of Wirth a few times," West coach Courtney Henderson said. "He hit some real big shots. That was the difference."

For three quarters, it was a defensive slugfest.

Cedar Falls led 20-19 with a minute remaining in the third quarter before the Tigers ran off the next 10 points — the last six coming on Wirth 3-pointers to begin the final period.

West (7-5) crawled back within five (31-26), but Cedar Falls made 16 free throws in the final five minutes to earn its third victory in the last four games.

"It’s such a low possession game when you play West because they’re playing to their strength — which is their size," Bardal said. "They’re willing to take time off the clock to get it inside."

Cedar Falls stymied West’s inside attack of John Puk and TrayVonn Wright.

The 6-foot-9 Puk took only three shots and finished with three points, while the 6-7 Wright had just seven points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

"(Coach) Bardal is an excellent coach and always has his team prepared," Henderson said. "Those guys know how to win. They did an excellent job of taking away our inside game."

Bardal praised 6-2 senior Kyle Bernard, who was giving up more than six inches to Puk and Wright.

"That was our focal point all week in practice," Bardal said of West’s inside attack. "Kyle was spectacular. You have to work extremely hard to get in front of Puk, but when you do that, you need to have good help-side and good pressure on the basketball. I thought we had all those things tonight.

"Our defensive effort was very, very good."

As a result, West settled for jump shots. The Wahawks were 12 of 38 from the field, but missed 19 of their first 24 shots and committed 16 turnovers.

Ryan Edwards paced the Wahawks with 19 points, including five 3-pointers.

It was the third consecutive loss for West, but Henderson felt better about this club’s effort than during the last two losses.

"In terms of competing, we competed like we were in the first part of our season again," he said. "We really worked hard, so I’m very, very happy with where we’re at right now.

"There’s still a lot of basketball to be played."

So, what's up with this kid? he doesn't seem to be putting up any #'s.

I don't know much about John, but my read on him is that he is a long term kind of player. He is coming to get stronger and develop his game and will red shirt next season. All big man at our level are considered projects, he apparently is very mobile and has a good amount of athletic ability. It will probably take a couple of years but he and Blake are the future big's, results might not be instantaneous.

No shot clock - 20-19 at the end of the 3rd period speaks volumes.

I heard that his team has poor guard play which makes it very difficult to get the ball inside.

From all I've heard John is an athletic big (legit 6'10") that can run the court, he is suppose to sit out next season and will have 4 years following that.

By the way, there aren't many athletic 6'10" players in the AE.

West boys secure winning season - Courier Sports

West boys secure winning season

By KELLY BEATON, Courier Sports Writer

WATERLOO - Friday marked a rare occasion in which Waterloo West center John Puk — whose frame stretches to 6-foot-9 — guarded an opponent who stood nearly eye-to-eye.

Regardless, Puk stood especially tall. And, as a result, he helped his Wahawks end a lengthy string of losing seasons.

Puk produced 22 points to go along with six blocked shots, helping West secure both a 54-35 win over Dubuque Hempstead and the Wahawks’ first winning season since 1993-94.

“It feels good. But we’re never satisfied,” said Puk, who outscored Hempstead’s solidly built 6-8 center, Brandon Gruber.

“How proud I am of my guys,” said coach Courtney Henderson, whose Wahawks improved to 11-8 overall and 7-7 in Mississippi Valley Conference action.

“This was a big game for us,” Henderson added. “It’s an opportune time to be playing well, so hopefully this puts us back on track.”

West was without the services of 6-7 playmaker TrayVonn Wright (sprained ankle) Friday. You could hardly tell.

Puk owned the interior much of the night, and helped stake the Wahawks to a 26-16 halftime lead.

Iowa State University football recruit Josh Lenz provided Hempstead’s lone first-half highlight, when the 6-foot-1 guard rose up and threw down a one-handed dunk on a breakaway.

After that, Hempstead (5-13, 2-11) was buried in an avalanche of bricks. The visitors shot just 11-for-49 (22.4 percent) from the floor. And, despite Gruber’s 15 points, the Mustangs couldn’t keep pace with Puk and company.

“It’s kinda fun watching two guys that big when they match up,” said Hempstead coach Curt Deutsch in reference to the Puk-versus-Gruber battle.

But, Deutsch noted that Hempstead had less success guarding Puk, even when the Mustangs applied double teams.

“I was picking and choosing the right moments to attack,” said Puk, a Division-I signee with Albany. “I was just not forcing things and staying strong with it.”

Fellow seniors Ryan Edwards and Max Nank also aided West’s effort, chipping in with 11 points and 10 points respectively.

As a result, the Wahawks’ search for a winning season is complete. Of course, West would love to reach the next rung of success by winning in the postseason.

“Hopefully,” said Henderson, “we’re peaking at the right time.”

West pushes No. 6 Wash to wire

By ROD PAYNE, Courier Sports Writer

WATERLOO — The Waterloo West boys’ basketball team put on an impressive dress rehearsal Friday night as they prepared for Monday’s substate showdown against crosstown rival East High.

The Wahawks hosedt the sixth-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington at Siddens Gymnasium and gave quite a performance before dropping a Mississippi Valley Conference thriller, 64-61.

The game did not follow the script, as the Warriors (15-6) struggled with the cast of Wahawk players through most of the game.

The ending, however, was a disappointment to the Wahawks fans as Max Shower’s 3-point attempt came up short as time expired.

“This was a cat-and-mouse game all the way,” Wahawks coach Courtney Henderson said. “We knew they were a very good basketball team coming in, and I just told the guys to go out and relax and have fun. We just came up a little short, and Washington made some good adjustments at halftime.”

The Wahawks were not to be bullied on their home court as they matched the Warriors’ intensity and built a 27-22 halftime advantage.

In the third period, however, it was the fast pace and attacking style of the Warriors that seemed to overwhelm the Wahawks’.

The Warriors outscored the home team, 21-7, in the third and had momentum going into the final frame with a 43-34 lead.

Once again, the Wahawks rewrote the script as they went through the fourth period.

Junior TrayVonn Wright put on a best supporting role off the bench, as he scored 11 of his 13 points in the final quarter.

Wright’s one-hand slam, followed by another monster slam off an alley-oop from Shower, brought the crowd to its feet and closed the gap to 60-55 with one minute to play.

Shower, who was playing his final game at Siddens gym, poured in 19 points before his final curtain shot at the buzzer rimmed away.

“It felt great watching this team come together in that final quarter,” Shower said. “They (Washington) came out and pressured us to start the second half, but we broke it and came back.

“A game like this, even though we lost, gives us a lot of momentum going into Monday night’s game.”

West will face East in a metro rivally that needs no build-up.

“We are a very confident team right now,” Henderson said. “You can’t help but get excited about opening up the playoffs against East.”
