2009 NY State Budget - Football Stadium

Big South in 2010.

If UAlbany doesn't find a home in the CAA or America East football by 2010 then it's time to move on. Being a winner means setting and achieving goals. If we want to be full FCS then we can make that happen. Same story with the stadium, start a public campaign. It may take years but it's better than waiting on the most dysfunctional state in the union. NY makes Michigan look good.

It's time to throw off the pessimism and low self-esteem that eternally shrouds the Capitol Region. UA is good enough and dog on it, people like you. How's that for a pep talk? Can we get some anti-depressants into the drinking water of the Capitol Region stat?

I know that we are not going to get the funding we need for a new stadium and in these economic times I can live with that. What I can not live with is not knowing what direction UA is headed in regard to football. The NEC, even with the autobid in 2 years, is a weak conference and will never be a FCS championship caliber conference. We need to chart a path to the future. I really don't think that the CAA is going to invite us when the new schools join in a year so where are we headed? If the AD would just state a goal of where we want to be in 5-10 years I think we could gain some public support and drum up some donations but right now I feel like we are just running in place.

welcome jpg_91, I've seen your posts over at AGS. Another football fan is what we need here!

This might be a little off topic but any idea where we stand in regard to a full time President? I think everyone is right in saying that the fact we only have an interim President continues to hinder us at the legislative level.

I think the problem lies in the fact that SUNY doesn't even have a chancellor. I would think they'll need a chancellor before they will be able to find a good president. But there hasn't been much progress on either, or at least that has been publicized.

In reading this board and the AGS board....I keep asking myself, where are we in the fund raising/planning process? How come there is NO INFORMATION about anything regarding the stadium? Why is everything SO SECRETIVE? How can you expect people to donate, get behind something that they know NOTHING about? I'm baffled!

YES YES YES YES!

I have been saying this for months now.

Is there some political angle that I am missing that the University may benefit from in not raising funds publicly?

I've posted the RPI fundraising materials - here's another DIII school - but this one is a PUBLIC school:

Here's a campaign from West Georgia

http://www.westga.edu/~stadium/index.html

Great quote:

The economic impact on our community and region will be immediate and profound. Building these facilities now will help continue to attract additional excellent students, potentially driving our enrollment from the current 10,600 students to over 15,000 students. UWG is expected to cross the 11,000 student mark this fall. Once this enrollment goal is achieved, the institution desires to move from NCAA Division II status to NCAA Division I (Division I-AA in football) and play against such teams as The Citadel, Furman, Appalachian State, and Georgia Southern to name a few. If you are known by the company you keep, West Georgia’s institutional reputation and recognition will surely increase as millions of potential students (through television) are introduced to UWG through athletics. This awareness will then drive both enrollment of students and reputation of the university.

Wow.

Great find. Its nice to see something concrete, even if it's just a memo mentioning 2011.

Way to go Danefan. I'll cling to the slighest good news. :)

In an effort to find anything public about the stadium fundraising I did a a "stadium" search of albany.edu which brought back this unfortunate tidbit :

http://www.albany.edu/space/documents/DGEIS_8_2008.pdf

Estimated construction start date of multi-use stadium - March 2011.

Didn't the original timetable indicate that the construction would start sometime in '09....back, back, back the stadium gets pushed. I'd be willing to wait 'till 2019 if that means that we get something out there, start some kind of a campaign.....something!

There has been virtually nothing new in my 3 or 4 years following this issue, the only thing we did get was an old rendering of the 'proposed' stadium.

Why don't we have something like this?

South Florida played it's first football game 11 years ago. Today: FBS Big East member (former top 10 team)

Buffalo joined the MAC around the same time. Today: MAC conference champions

Georgia State: Haven't played a single down of football. 2010 CAA Full Schollie FCS Member

West Georgia: I have never heard of them (and I lived here). Stadium in the near future.

You just gotta want it. My father taught me that lesson when I was 5. It still applies.

Ha, ha great point Danefan.

It just feels like at times people act as though we're talking abount putting a man on Mars. We're talking sponsoring 64 scholarships and building a 12k stadium. This has been done, what 200 times already? There are 111 FBS schools and they should have all met that minimum threshold.

I'm a project manager. I get paid to make things happen. I sometimes forget this isn't my project. Hah ha, I wish it were. This is something to get excited about.

what is particularly disturbing about this budget is that it actually increases spending, most of it going towards an already generous welfare system. To cut SUNY funding so drastically and increase welfare programs is OUTRAGEOUS. Add to that all of the ridiculous taxes that are imposed by the state and it equates to a piss poor solution to a problem by a man who wasnt even elected into office!
