UMBC @ UA

I've never been to UMBC. Has anyone here been there? Thoughts? Suggestions? Car? Plane?

Similar to UAlbany in that there's a perimeter road around the campus isolating it from the surroundings, except that there's not much to UMBC's immediate surroundings either. 5-6 hours from Albany by car via I-81 and I-88. A plane from upstate NY doesn't seem worthwhile timewise unless you live next to the airport and get some $39 deal to Baltimore.

Good point, driving is the way to go. I found this and it should serve as a good starting point for planning my travel: http://www.visitbacomd.com/visitorguide.html

(Baltimore County Tourism). Perhaps it will assist others as well.

Glad to see Johnson score too. If nothing else to keep defenses honest on him. I liked the fact that Brian C. looked a little more aggressive offensively and on the boards. A lot of time he catches it in his favorite corner spot and if the shot isn't open he passes back out. Yesterday he put it on the floor and made the defense come to him a couple of times. Great to see.

Just watched the throw down foul on Ambrose on TW3 Spadafora was boxing Tim out and may have had a grab of Tim's jersey.

Tim did throw him down but it showed clearly that the official was looking away and only reacted after seeing Spadafora on the ground. He never saw the foul.

It was nice to see coach take a shot at Tim's defense in the Gazzette after his 26 point 6 rebound effort. Apparently it was his D that kept him off the floor against SB.

Hey Coach, couple of minor points. Tim was in foul trouble and that helped him off the floor. And secondly, in case you weren't paying full attention it was the Offense that stunk up the joint against SB. If Tim was not in foul trouble, or fouled out, he better have been in that game.

Has anybody noticed we've been winning high scoring games and losing low scoring games. Maybe, just maybe we can outscore people while pushing the ball. Sure, the TO's will increase, but so will the points. And for selfish reasons it was certainly more entertaning to watch yesterday's game (win or lose) than that disaster that was the SB game. We have the rebounders and the athletes to play more up tempo. It showed yesterday. On a number of occassions the ball was pushed up court even when we didn't have numbers. More please.

Slightly OT, but pertaining to UMBC, is anyone planning on going to the UMBC game in Baltimore? I see that it is on a Sunday at 2:05pm, and for me, that is the last road weekend game this season (unless we find ourselves in a hostile venue the second/third weekend in March in the AE Title game).

I've never been to UMBC. Has anyone here been there? Thoughts? Suggestions? Car? Plane?

I will be going down that weekend either Friday afternoon or Friday night. I have never been to UMBC for basketball, but have been there for lacrosse a few times and baseball once. I will be driving.

The quickest way if you are not going during NY rush hour is 1-87 to exit 14A-Garden St to exit 129-NJ Turnpike which turns to 1-95 in Delaware, I-95 exit 47 in Maryland and follow signs for UMBC. This way is 345 miles from UA campus and 5 hours 11 minutes per AAA. Going 1-88 to 1-81 to I-83 is 398 miles and 6 hours 1 minute per AAA. I have gone both ways. I-88 to I-81 to I-83 definitely takes a little longer, but you can stop at Brooks in Oneonta, you have no traffic and no tolls. Thruway/NJ turnpike/Delaware is $15 to $20 in tolls each way.

On Saturday 2/28, there is a lacrosse doubleheader w/ Princeton-Johns Hopkins and Duke-Maryland at Raven stadium at noon. That is downtown near the inner harbor and about 7.5 miles from UMBC. I will be staying there and going to the lacrosse on Saturday and the UA game on Sunday. There are a lot of hotels and places to eat and drink in the inner harbor and tourist attractions for people with interest in that.

Also if you fly. UMBC is right near the airport. One of the roads out of UMBC (I-195- there are signs on their perimeter road) leads into the airport (5 minutes away) and there are plenty of hotels near the airport, but there is not much near those hotels.

Boisy, let me know what you think of the play where Allen was taken out under the offensive glass. That looked like a horrible no-call, but I'd be curious to see what you think.

“There’s no secret that we need Timmy and Will on the court for us to be successful,” said Brown. “Will was 80 percent today, and he played well. If Tim defends, he stays on the floor. His defense cost him his minutes in the last game.” - Gazzette
McFan - is this what you call Coach taking a shot at Tim in the Gazette?

To me it appears to be a statement of fact -

There’s no secret that we need Timmy and Will on the court for us to be successful - Brown

Due to foul trouble (silly fouls) Tim got to play 15minutes, in which time he committed 5 fouls and got off 9 shots

If Tim defends, he stays on the floor. His defense cost him his minutes in the last game. - Brown

1st half - 2 quick fouls to the bench, early 2nd half foul #3 to the bench, stagnant offense put Timmy back in foul #4 to the bench put him back in foul #5 good bye Timmy. I don't percieve that as a coach holding back a player that's a player committing stupid fouls which cost him minutes and probably the team the game.

Timmy's a talent but even last night when he almost got a double double Pts (26)-Turnovers (7). Coach apparently tried to let him play through his mistakes. Coach also seems to save Timmy by rotating him out on defense whenever possible.

How about in a 5 pt game Timmy retaliating and throwing Spadafora to the ground - not what I would list as a smart or mature play.

In my opinion we need Tim on the floor as much as possible but he must play better "D" and be more intelligent.

MsGDG - great job - same official both times.

Was it the official on both (the Allen and Ambrose no call/foul) didn't notice, great catch!

Does anyone know which one he is? Jeff Nichols, John Gwynn, or Mike Alvaro

Yes, that is what I call taking a shot at Tim. If he wanted to say bad fouls, lazy fouls, stupid fouls after the SB game, fine. To bring up Tims apparant lack of D after that win (a game later) is not necessary. He could talk about the TO's. After the game coach put the blame on himself. A few days later?

One more point, the SB point gaurd knocked a couple of threes down in a short period in the second half and nobody was yanked. Let's guess if Tim was on the floor where he would have been?

I don't believe I'm alone in thinking that coach has too short a leash on Tim. In fact the crowd around me gets very upset.

Tim makes plenty of mistakes, but this team can't win without him on the floor.

McFan - I believe Coach has admitted having Tim on a short leash but he has also said he has to let Tim play through some of his mistakes.

I think in the Stony Brook game Tim brought it on himself. What should a Coach do keep Tim out there and let him foul out in 5 minutes? Tim did it to himself in that game.
