Recruiting

Recommended Posts

True, but with Brux and a big coming for 2012...and Iati's scholarship open...I think that is what the poster really intended, where does scholly 2 come from.

Hopefully, it does not come from a Logan Aronholt and his career being stunted by the knee problem.

Bruxvoort is paying his first year, much like Puk.

You see a pic of that tractor from Coach O'D's recruiting trip; the Bruxvoort family can afford a year of tuition. Then, they either play the kid or red-shirt him...either way, the rest of his years are on scholarship.

That's what I think we were told when the kid committed.

Hopefully he is really good, but I'm nervous that a kid is willing to pay his own way. What other offers did he have? It's not like we are Duke or SU or Kentucky. Not doubting your info, just questioning why he would do it.

I posted the following in a different thread after the Iati news came out. If Dane96's comments on Bruxvoort are correct..then that seems to answer my question.

"This might be thinking too far ahead..but does this affect the team's scholarship situation? I believe (?) we have 13 players on scholly right now. Iati graduting would put that number at 12. I understand the Bruxvoort kid from Iowa is coming in next year..does he get the 13th? The timing seems off though..because the Iati article makes it seem as though this was a relatively recent decision..and I think Bruxvoort committed quite a while ago?"

This does seem to suggest that we would have a scholarship open (Lassen is a 2013 commit..so he doesn't factor in here)..which sounds like it might apply to talk of us recruiting a big for next year.

Puk sat-out/paid his way his first year..so it's not unheard of (re: Bruxvoort). I would think that the (potential) appeal could be that the player could then get 4 quality years..instead of coming in..playing sparingly as a freshman..and then having just 3 years left.

I think a big could/would definitely be useful in 2012-13..so it will be interesting to see if that's how this all plays out.

If what I heard was true, then BINGO!

The kid's family has money...he comes, gets an undergrad and grad degree and plays hoop when he is ready to play and contribute...all in 5-6 years for the cost of maybe 1-2 from a NE institution that has some solid academics.

Win-win.

To me this says that we are getting smart kids to come to UA. If you know you're going to graduate school (which I think Puk and many of our players are) it makes sense to pay a year of undergrad tuition as a freshman and then get a scholarship while you're in grad school.

Grad school credits are more expensive than undergrad credits so it works out for you.

I wish I was that smart coming out of high school and also, you know, could play basketball.

Is this better, for the kid, than say red shirting? Don't they remain on scholly while red shirting?

Not trying to be negative, and I'm sure the approach has some value. To me it just smells of no other real (basketball) options.

I have no idea. There are so many avenues and I don't know the benefits to all of them.

I remember being surprised that there were players who wanted to red-shirt. I always thought you would want to play right away and not red-shirt. I remember Taylor Coppenrath saying we offered him a scholarship and he visited but he wanted to go to Vermont so he could red-shirt for a year.

That was unfortunate, but we just didnt have enough players to allow one sit.

  • 3 weeks later...

Looks like the staff is pursuing the JUCO route..which would make sense given their preference for someone who could be effective right away. From their tweets..Coach Brown was at a JUCO tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas and Coach Friel was at a JUCO tournament in Danville, Illinois.

@UAHOOPSWB The staff has been working hard to add a piece or 2 for next season. One will definitely be a BIG. Recruiting never ends.

Interesting.. one or TWO.. hmm speculation...

Someone transfering? He also tweeted.

@UAHOOPSWB Player meetings went well today. Returning players are excited about next season.

Does that mean there are some or one that is not returning?

This was on the AE board but I figured I'd post it here. We've been mentioned as being involved with RJ Evans who is a fifth year transfer from Holy Cross.

Now that's certainly interesting. I'm assuming the interest had to have been pre-Iati returning. Not only do we not have an extra scholarship now..but it would seem that we're pretty well filled at the guard position (Black, Aronhalt, Suero, Iati, Watts, Gibson, Hooley and Page). And he's looking at UConn, Wake Forest and Virginia.
