Sophomore Field Hockey Standout Anna Bottino Selected to U-21 USA Junior National Team

LANCASTER, PA. – With a lengthy try-out process behind her, University at Albany sophomore midfielder Anna Bottino was named to the 2015-16 Under-21 USA Junior National Squad earlier this week. Bottino was one of 21 to make the team.

“It’s an honor to be competing and training with some of the best field hockey players in the country, and to be coached by such knowledgeable individuals,” said Bottino. I want to thank my coaches, teammates and family for all of their support.”

Bottino’s journey with Team USA began last fall, earning a spot on the U-19 Junior National squad in January. She embarked on a foreign tour to Belgium in April, after a series of exhibition games.

Following her performance in the U-19 ranks, Bottino was invited to the Young Women’s National Championships High Performance Tournament in June. She practiced with the New England regional squad in the spring to earn a spot in the by-invitation-only tournament.

In the week following the High Performance Tournament, Bottino took part in the junior national tryout at the USA Field Hockey complex, Spooky Nook. After being called back for a second try-out, the 18 year-old joined the ranks of some of the top collegiate field hockey players in the country on the U-21 Junior National Team.

After the 2015 UAlbany field hockey season, Bottino will partake in her first official training camp with the team in November to prepare for a series of games against Great Britain in January. The training sessions and exhibition contests will help coaches decide who will make the Pan American Games team, consisting of 18 players and two alternates. The 2016 Pan Am Junior Championship takes place March 29-April 10 in Trinidad & Tobago.

Bottino is the defending America East Rookie of the Year. The Great Danes kick off their 2015 season the last weekend of August, with a pair of games in Ohio at Miami (Ohio) and Ohio State.
