Recruiting - 2018

Hate to be a downer but I foresee some very unhappy players next year due to lack of playing time and more transfers at the end of the year.  I really hope I'm wrong but many of these young men were probably recruited with open roster/playing time as a big draw only to see more players brought in later who will most likely take their playing time. I REALLY hope I'm wrong.

This to me seems like a stretch in terms of worry...last year we all thought the same thing. What happened? Clark got in and couldn't do anything, Conway and Cohrain looked lost and couldn't really play at this level thus transferred down. This may shock some folks...but not everyone one of the kids brought in this season will pan out. The goal is to build competition, let them go at each other and EARN time...some will excel and some won't. Not worried! Just worried that we find enough guy in the excel group that can play.

I’d rather have too many good players competing for those 200 minutes a game than not enough. Basically any kid good enough to earn a D1 scholarship was a star player in HS. Those that rise to the top get the bulk of the minutes in college. Those that are willing to put ego and preconceptions aside become solid role players and prosper. Those that are unwilling to accept a lesser role or can read the tea leaves and see that they are in over their heads and won’t see much playing time will move on. It’s the way it has to be. I, for one, am really excited to see which ones rise to the top this year and if some players can’t accept that they will have diminished roles, so be it.

We need to find a way to not go 7 deep...my hope is that kids are given a true opportunity on the court to fail leading up to AE play so we have some quality depth and experience in conference play.

Agreed.  I’d like to see a 10 man rotation with 2 guys getting 30 min each, 5 with 20 min, 3 splitting the other 40 min.  Roundabout, of course.

Yes, more men get to play in each game. With the limited rotation, i don't like seeing our best, but exhausted men on the court towards the end of the game with little left in the tank. How many games did we lose last season in the last five minutes?

I wonder how many games we would have been out of with 5 minutes to go if coach played 10 guys during the 1st 35 minutes.

I agree! We had NO bench last year. As much as many on the blog complained about Nichols, Campbell, etc.; there was simply no one on the bench capable/willing to step up. Hopefully it will be better this year. I also think in retrospect Red Shirting all three Aussies was a mistake {easy to second guess after the fact.} Hopefully it gives all three an extra year to excel @ UA.

Final update of 2018 as VC isn't 100% up to date. Not that we have roster room or anything but was curious if some of the guys reclassified that we offered but didn't get, etc.

Quinlan Bennett - Committed to Triton College per his twitter
Jordan Starr - Signed with Masters (NAIA) to play for his father
Winslow Martin II - Can't find much traces of this guy making any moves...no longer on VC...may have been treated for some type of cancer during last season? Wish the man health if that's the case!
