NCAA just ( rather earlier) closed all sporting events, from all sports, to the public. SUNY close. World is going insane. I too don't buy the hype all that much.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28885422/ncaa-says-tournament-go-fans

So what happens to you guys who have season tickets? Is UA giving refunds? Or what?

Maybe TD can graduate from Yale and then come home to UAlbany for a Grad year. Wishful thinking!!

all sports are not ending

News said no decision on SUNY sports yet. If so, the year ends with today’s WLax 20-10 win over $iena.

It's not about ending the seasons...it's about us not being able to go to games and the kids playing in front of empty seats for the remainder of the season. At least the way that I understood the NCAA press release. Or is it only related to hoops?

The way I read it the NCAA will just have no fans at its championship tournaments. The rest is up to schools or conferences. Some conference tourneys will have fans, others not

UA Off campus student has CoronaVirus and a man from Guilderland as it too.  I still think folks are way overreacting to this.  Remember THIS flu season over 30,000 have died in  the US and about 45++ from Corona......... and all of those have been people over 80 or a few with very badly compromised immune systems.  A complete over-reaction!

You understand that mortality rate of Covid is exponentially higher then season flu...right?

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that between 20,000 to 52,000 Americans have succumbed to influenza this season. If Fauci's assessment is correct, that implies that an unmitigated COVID-19 epidemic would end up killing between 200,000 and 520,000 Americans. Consider for comparison that just over 2.8 million Americans died in 2018."

Your assumption is not valid.    You are including the same age groups as deaths from the Flu, which is NOT EVEN close to the same for Corona.   The flu this year has, for example killed almost 400 small children and many young adults and middle aged folks.  This virus kills the elderly - MOSTLY so far those over 80 and those with highly compromised immune systems.  Dr. Fauci has clearly stated this every other day when they have the news conferences.   It is far more deadly FOR THAT group, not the population in general as the flu has been this season.

It's impossible to know because the infection from Covid isn't yet as widespread as that of the Flu. This is from the CDC, mortality rate by group. You'll see that across the board, the morbidity rate is exponentially higher. Yes, it impacts older people at a much higher rate but for all age groups it's clear that this (if penetration hits that of the common flu) thing will kill all age groups at a much higher rate. As stated above, flu kills between 25-50k people...you have something that could potentially kill a half a million people if as expected there is as similar infection rate, roughly 10 times worse but you think it's an over-reaction. Ok...lol

Put it this way...death rate for combine groups 0-64 for the flu adds up to 0.1%...death rate for Covid for the same age group is 2.1%. This is normalized across the same population. These numbers could change if detection ramps up and full impact/morbidity comes into better focus.

Thanks, Click. Amazing that this is being debated while the smartest scientists in the world are calling urgently for a rapid response.

I'm not an alarmist by nature regardless of my toting around a gas can around here but it's silly to suggest this is like the flu...you don't have to lose your mind about it but don't play it down. To speak cavalierly as this virus impacts mostly the old or imunocompromised individuals as if that was any consolation or respite from the situation is so cynical. Are the elderly not worthy of continuing life or in some way disposable? I understand that wasn't a direct assertion but it's certainly implied when this is being minimized as an over-reaction. If this is an over-reaction, society will get back on it's feet quickly, business and schools will re-open, sports will be played. If the severity of this is underestimated...and 500k people die, I'm sorry...then what? Hope for the best but prepare for the worst...

But then again, I never did play high-level sports or go through medical school so what do I know...

I've also seen this BUT it is not an accurate representation of what is happening, not even close. It is not based on real figures from the US, because there aren't any.  As of  today there are 1323 cases in the US and about 38-45 deaths right now depending on what news report you accept.   But this IS a typical response from you.  It has nothing whatever to do with playing sports or anything else, just basic research and understanding of what one is looking at.  But you can attack me as you always do.  It is what some folks do when they have no real response!  READ the last sentence below from Johns Hopkins several times! <<<<<<<<THOUGHT TO BE>>>>>>

From the Johns Hopkins today

Infections

COVID-19: Approximately 127,863 cases worldwide; 1,323 cases in the U.S. as of Mar. 12, 2020.

Flu: Estimated 1 billion cases worldwide; 9.3 million to 45 million cases in the U.S. per year.

Deaths

COVID-19: Approximately 4,718 deaths reported worldwide; 38 deaths in the U.S., as of Mar. 12, 2020.

Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.

The COVID-19 situation is changing rapidly. Since this disease is caused by a new virus, people do not have immunity to it, and a vaccine may be many months away. Doctors and scientists are working on estimating the mortality rate of COVID-19, but at present, it is thought to be higher than that of most strains of the flu."
