I am posting a link concerning an article from the Burlington Free Press related to the topic, please note the article does make a reference to a UVM male basketball player involvement in sexual assault against a female athlete: https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/news/education/university-of-vermont/2021/05/03/uvm-protest-kendall-ware-sexual-assault-handling-outrages-students-uvm-empowering-survivors-metoo/4927912001/

There are now multiple reports of it growing significantly bigger with additional members of the basketball team, and members of the UVM Hockey team and other athletes. Allegations of multiple gang rapes, heavy partying, and a culture of bad things. Its gonna blow up big.The Lt. Governor of Vermont tweeted about it yesterday.

I'm hoping our new assistant coach had nothing to do with it and no trouble flows our way in the aftermath.

As always, its innocent until proven guilty for all parties involved, but the sheer number of new complaints and accusations is troubling to say the least.

Those is us who knew this was bubbling under the surface immediately questioned the hiring of Tibbs. It was bad optics than and even worse now. Hopefully not a mistake that connects us to the horrendous situation and why some of us also bristled at DK brining up Lamb in his intro press conference.

I would like to think our concerns about this topic include:

  • That all the victims and potential victims receive the support and assistance in dealing with any abuse
  • That abuse allegations are thoroughly and completely investigated
  •  If crimes were committed and laws broken, the violators of the crimes are fully prosecuted to the full extent of the law
  • That administrators and coaches are helf accountable if they were aware of the abuse and violations of athletic policies and took no action to report the abuse and/or violations

These allegations are reminder to the UAlbany Administration, UAlbany Sports Administration and our coaches of the need to be vigilant to ensure the safety and well being of students and our student-athletes.  Let us not forget, Doctor Coach Bob Ford had to deal with 3 student-athletes involved in an abuse incident a few years ago.  Yes, it can happen here again if we are not vigilant.

A terrible situation. It was bad before when we just knew about the one instance on the basketball team that UVM seemed to be covering up, but now it is that much more shameful. Disgusting when the systems meant to protect and assist those who've been harmed are instead used to protect and enable those who do the harm. I don't think anyone is naive enough to think this is a problem that's limited to only UVM, just that the other shoe is dropping there now. Hopefully there's an actual reckoning and not the typical hiring of an "independent" outside investigation that ends with a hand waving report absolving everyone in power of any sort of responsibility.

I have continue to monitor the situation coming out of UVM and Burlington VT... follow the link for a statement from UVM Athletic Director Jeff Schulman  which was issued at 9:30 AM today: https://uvmathletics.com/news/2021/5/7/general-uvm-athletics-statement-on-recent-campus-events.aspx
