UAlbany’s Alison Smisdom, left, and Julie Rodijk, practicing in October, face Penn State Sunday in the NCAA Tournament.

UAlbany upset fourth-seeded Michigan 2-1 in overtime on Friday in their NCAA Division I Field Hockey Tournament first-round contest at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Sophia Schoonmaker scored 9 minutes, 2 seconds into extra time to snap a 1-1 deadlock and punch the Great Danes’ ticket into the quarterfinals with the sudden-death victory.

Michigan jumped ahead 1-0 right before halftime when Tina D’Anjolell sent home a Kathryn Peterson pass.

The Wolverines held the one goal advantage until Floor de Ruiter’s equalizer forced overtime with only 2:59 left in regulation. De Ruiter deflected Alison Smisdom’s shot in front of Michigan goalie Anna Spieker to lift the Great Danes into overtime. Smisdom received credit for the assist.

The Great Danes move on to face Big Ten power Penn State, which coasted to a 5-0 win over Louisville. UAlbany and Penn St. face off at 1 p.m. Sunday back in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Nittany Lions beat the Great Danes 6-2 on Sept. 3 at UAlbany’s Alumni Turf field.
