1. Does anyone have any interest in putting together a NBA fantasy league?  Now that basketball season is upon us, I’ve been thinking about doing something like this but a league of one isn’t too much fun.  NBA.com has a free league that I could set up, if there is no interest then that’s cool to.  I hope this type of solicitations is permitted, if not then delete the thread.

    16664

I will do it though the one year I did participate I did not fair well. I prefer baseball and football but I will give it another run.

    16665

I am in. Especially is Albany Alum 94 is in. That's free pickings.

  2. to me, this is the anti-Jamar Wilson move. He saw his stock rising, so he turned his back on us. Sad. - GreatDanes84

Unless you're an UA insider or a close personal acquaintance with the recruit we'll never know what happened or is happening.

I'm in agreement with alum73's way of thinking

Not knowing the reason for this, it;s all speculation. There are many possible reasons.

Lets hope the staff takes care of business and it all works out for the best for both side of the equation.

    16414

That's crap. The article all but admits that the kid was reneging because his stock went up and he expects better offers. Good for the kid. It might be the anti-Jamar, but it also might be best for Howard Little.

  3. Am I( missing something...I dont see us listed...just Kent St. at 102.

    15559

Correct - when we finished last year at 119 and Siena was listed at 129 most figured we'd be on the list, and we've been having fun checking the teams we'll be ahead of when (if) we ever show up - although it's getting antsy.

    15561

We will be on the list. I am confident that they will overrate us after the UConn game and with Jamar coming back.

  4. If UA's still on the list, we're ranked ahead of two teams that made the Tourney last year (SetonHall & Oral Roberts).

That pretty much speaks for itself.

I think the thing that separates us from most - if not all - of the teams listed so far is the fact that we're  returning almost all of our good players from last year.

With Miami losing Gulliermo Diaz and Seton Hall losing, well, pretty much everyone, I can completely see why you'd rank Albany over them.

It's also pretty cool to be ranked ahead of Providence and Wake Forest (Despite Wake's recent general crapiness)

    15482

I second these thoughts. Miami also lost Hite. Miami could finish dead last in the ACC this year.

There is no way that Albany got overlooked for this list after last year and with most of the team returning. I bet they are getting TOO much credit for the UConn game.

I say they will be around 92-95. Which may be high, but not too high.

  5. College Hoopnet publishes a list of the Top 144 Teams one a day for 144 days.

Last season UA appeared on it at 141 this season they are at 133 already and no mention of UA.

Will Albany be listed this year?

If you think so - where will they be listed?

    15207

Around 110. They have to be listed if they were listed last year.

  6. twballgame9 - glad to see your support and interest in UA Hoop but please let the individuals react to Siena the way we want.

This board is not run with the dictatorial conformist methods of a Siena Tony type board.

For some it may be boring and for some it may be fun, each to their own!!!

    15195

I am not suggesting censorship. I am suggesting that the insecurity about Siena accepting us is unnecessary.

Let's talk about UConn and the legit shot we have to beat that team in a rebuilding year.

  7. . . . I would just suggest we look around and maybe aim a little higher in choosing a rival.    It is my hope that Albany reaches a level where Albany-Siena is unthinkable.  And my main point is more about the volume of discussion on Siena -- I know I can just skip to the recruiting info, but that would take 4 seconds.  Most of the talk is about Siena.

    15190

You make a good point also about recruiting. Let me make my one observation here on this topic.

I have made many of my posts here on this basketball forum on the Siena issue. Why do I do this? The simple answer is that I know more about this issue than many other topics. I make comments because this is an area where I feel I can make a worthwhile contribution. I suspect that many other posters here feel the same way.

Why don't I make as many comments about recruiting, for example? It's simple. I'm not privy to as much information on this topic. I can choose two ways to respond to this type of information on this forum.

I can ignore it, sort of the way statefan once described the nature of his posts. He's unwilling to make comments on many topics unless he has some unique comment or information to share with us. (Forgive me, statefan, if I am putting the wrong words in your mouth.) He doesn't envision his role as a rah-rah cheerleader.

Or I can take on the cheerleader role, which I and others do occasionally here. Sometimes that tack might be valuable on this forum.

By the way, I am really impressed with the way Brown is handling recruiting. He is bringing in some solid recruits in next year's class. But he doesn't stop there. He already has a huge start on the new players for 2007-08 season while other coaches still don't have next season taken care of. Positive comments on the AE board about Brown's recruiting efforts demonstrate the respect he has engendered from knowledgeable fans from other AE schools.

Just because some of us older posters here seem focused on the Siena topic doesn't mean that we are neglecting the other aspects of our program. I think the great majority of UAlbany posters here are very impressed with the direction our program is taking next year and beyond. We are a forward-looking lot.

    15193

Good points all olddog. I am just trying to help the collective get out of the evident little brother syndrome that seems to exist, and doesn't need to anymore. There is a collective lack of self confidence on our side, manifesting itself in a need to be acknowledged as successful by the Siena fans, combined with a real fear from the Siena fans that their program is sliding into second faster than the British Empire after WWII. Seems petty.

  8. Its just that it is every thread that get redundant and unreadable.  The constant banter with Siena Tony is interrupting my enjoyment of the posts on new recruits, etc.

In truth, in my 4 years at Albany, I barely knew where Siena was, and simply making the tournament does not increase my interest in what for anyone under 45 in an artificial rivalry.

Siena is irrelevant.  Shoot higher and leave them in the rear view mirror.

    15187

    Thank you for your opinion.

But, remember, it's just your opinion.

If you don't want to read the opinions here, which is one of the main purposes of this message board, just don't turn your eyes here. It's your option. In the meantime, those of us who profess an interest in this topic should be allowed to post observations and make opinions on it.

You are relatively new to UAlbany basketball, but many of us here on this board have followed UAlbany hoops for decades and decades. First of all, you should be a little more tolerant of the passion we have for UAlbany basketball in general and in the Siena rivalry specifically.

I would hardly call the rivalry irrelevant. The only way it is irrelevant is in the run for an NCAA seed. In the old times until the rivalry ended in 1976 it was easily the most hotly contested local basketball game and generated the greatest interest from the fans. You would not have believed the passion the contests generated before, during, and after the games.

That passion has returned since the renewal of the rivalry. It easily draws more fans for each school than just about any other contest on the schedule. You cannot simply ignore the interest by the fans and the media for this game. It is not artificial, as you term it, when it draws around 10,000 fans per year. If the game were played on a Saturday evening with decent weather, it will attract more than 12,000 fans as each team becomes more highly ranked on the national scene.

I agree with you that this game should not be the sole focus of the team and fans, but you must understand that in the early years of our Division I the game is an outstanding measuring stick for the progress our program has made. Any time you defeat a long-established, tradition-rich team in Siena - or merely come close to victory, the game signifies another step forward in UAlbany's rise.

Yes, we have already established our profile among Siena fans, local college hoop aficionados, and - maybe our greatest challenge - our own students and alumni. In that sense UAlbany men's basketball has already transcended the Siena game with great games against the likes of Vermont, UCLA, Florida, and UConn. We now have other solid measuring sticks with which to compare the development of UAlbany basketball.

But as long as the games are played, the UAlbany-Siena basketball rivalry will continue to measure just how far UAlbany has progressed in Division I hoops.

    15188

Fair enough old dog. You state your point well. I would just say that I was 3 in 1976 when, as you admit, "the rivalry ended." Holy Cross used to beat BC in the 50s and early 60s, but that rivalry was rightfully euthanized in football in the early 80s and basketball this year.

  9. The Siena obsession is a) boring, and B) embarassing.

    © Non of the above

Its not an obsession; making fun of Siena sports like any other team is harmless fun (just as long as you don't go crazy).  Its not embarassing, lets face it Siena does the same thing to us.  twbg9 it's just sports this sort of thing goes on all the time, nothing to get upset about; no one is going to be hurt by this current situation: Siena will have a basketball season; Kojo if he is smart will atleast get his degree before he trys to go pro, and I'm sure UA and Siena will continue to grow and do well.  Hopefully both teams make it to the NCAA's in the same year.

  10. I need a UA law ruling on this, is the "Siena Football" chant still a good one to use at the game in December?

    15168

I would say it is so old...no...however, nice signage touting our rise compared to Siena...would be great...you know, something similar to DP's tag line.

The Siena obsession is a) boring, and B) embarassing.

  11. UAalum72 - Just to add to your case about recruiting in the metro NY area....

Also these statements about Ambrose are not from Great Danes fans who drank to much Purple Kool Aid. The comments are from neutral observers.

    Has High Major Interest

by Brian Towey of NewYorkInsider.com, February 8, 2006 at 4:29pm ET

    Tim Ambrose Profile

The New York area has had its share of risers this winter out of the senior class, but few have bolstered their stock the way Tim Ambrose has. The live-bodied and stocky 6-foot, 209 pound shooting guard from Our Savior New American in Centereach, New York, has elevated himself to arguably the top option among available players in the NYC vicinity.

"USC in California, they're interested," said Ambrose. "I spoke to Georgetown (on Monday). They're going to look at me. St. John's, Fairfield, Clemson (are interested)."

OSNA coach Ron Stelzer added that Pittsburgh had called to inquire about Ambrose.

    ___________________________________________________________________

Now lets hope he takes care of business in the classroom. He has the core courses. He cames up short on the test. If he is anything like Jamar as a quality person he'll persevere and take care of business.

    15059

If Fairfield was into this kid, they probably have him pretty well scouted. Cooley is the new head guy there, and he attended many OSNA games while recruiting Daye Kaba, his backcourt mate from France to BC. Cooley has a fantastic eye for talent, so this is probably a very good get for Albany.

  12. I believe you can't lock the kid in for life ... he would just have to sit for two years instead of one if you don't give him the release.  I could be wrong.

Trust me, Duquesne is not a "higher level" than Siena, though.  The competition they play probably is, in some respects (their league), but he'd be walking into a great black hole in Pittsburgh.  They'd be tied with St. Bonaventure if and when the A-10 school presidents got some balls and voted 2-4 teams out of that over-sized, bloated league.

    15040

You are right, you can't lock the kid in for life. It is only one year if you transfer out of conference, and only some conferences have the two-year rule.

Duquesne is staling more than a few players. They stole James a little while back. They won't be horrible.

  13. Topic:  How good is Tim Ambrose? (from HoopsUSA)

Everyone says that he is the most explosive guard that theyve ever seen but he doesnt get the recognition. He plays for a school called Our Savior New American and is constantly dropping big buckets against the best competition. He has a game like Iverson but can jump out of the gym. I would like to know what college is he going to. I'm also wondering if someone can get him into the most recognizable camps because Rick Pitino and any other D1 coach with common sense should take a look at this kid. He scored 27 points on Wayne Ellington who is supposed to be the #1 guard in the country.

Timmy Ambrose is the real deal. I have had the pleasure of watching him play several times and speaking with him several times. He is above average in every aspect of the game. I know that several high major colleges have shown interest( St. Johns, UMass, etc.). Good luck to this classy young man wherever he ends up.

King James Shooting Stars Classic Recap

Tim Ambrose (6'2" Sr. SG, Centereach (NY) Our Savior New American)  Well-built guard is very athletic and really knows how to score the ball. He's great at driving and finishing, while also getting some transition baskets, going for 32 points in one game. High-major minus prospect may prep next year, as he still needs a qualifying test score.

His high school back court teammate, Daye Kaba, is going to BC I think.

  14. I know the merits of hoopscoop have been debated often on this and other forums. For example the average ranking of our recruits is 2.6 but should be 2.8. It's still fun to look at their class rankings of recruits and see Albany with the 69th best recruiting class in the country.

By the ranking they really seem to like Carl Ross and Michael Knight a lot. I read somewhere in one of the California papers they described Carl Ross as a "human highlight film." I can't recall a previous Albany recruit who was described in those terms although Jamar is now. Not that I'm comparing the two.

Here's the list of some teams of interest from hoopscoops rankings. Note Siena's ranking doesn't include Corey Magee who signed with Canisius but is coming to Siena so they should be higher:

    14651

THAT HAS TO BE THE DUMBEST RANKING SYSTEM OF ALL TIME. TOTAL POINTS FOR ALL RECRUITS? WHY NOT RANK BY AVERAGE?

  15. As a Met fan and Dane fan.  I have found some common similiarities.  Siena reminds me so much of a Yankee fan as they point to history and live off the past.  The present and future matter and not the 26 rings you won over past inferior teams.  Siena is still living off the past as U Albany becomes the #1 show in town.

I predict in a few years we may have similiar debates between U albany and 'Cuse.  We will look back and say Siena.....oh yeah...I remember those games, are they still D1?

    14665

Easy there....at least the Yankees have a history...Mets, what?

    14666

The key word there -- "history"

  16. Might not be garbage.

Jay Wright came from Hofstra and played Stony Brook when they were starting up.

Wright also worked for Rollie Massamino at Villanove and Rollie was a head Coach at Stony Brook (DIII).

Jay has alot of ties to LI and the Brook.

It's hard to believe but not to outrageous. I'm sure somehow there is a benefit in it for Nova. They may get a small payday and the game doesn't affect RPI much because it's a road win.

    14596

It's actually better for the first 25% of your RPI to play SB on the road if you are Nova. Under the new weighted system, road wins are are multiplied by a factor of like 1.3 (not sure the actual number) whereas home wins get a .7 (once again, not sure of the number).

  17. As we all know the Pepsi Arena's naming rights are up for grabs....here is a thought, do you think we could get enough alumni support to buy the rights and name it the "Great Dane Arena".  Then you know who would be playing all their "home" games in the Great Dane Arena.  I think that would be HYSTERICAL!!!

    Any thoughts?

    14210

I like "The Not Siena's Home Court Arena"
