Crenshaw, Scheetz and Uitti Claim Week One Volleyball Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Albany's Ashley Crenshaw (Birmingham, Ala./Hoover) earned America East Volleyball Player of the Week for week one, while UMBC's Bridget Scheetz (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) and New Hampshire's Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) received Rookie and Setter of the Week honors, respectively. Crenshaw averaged 4.38 kills and 1.05 blocks through the first 21 games of the season. Both of those stats put her in the conference's top seven. The senior also leads the league with a .431 hitting percentage. Her opening weekend was highlighted by a career-best 28-kill performance against Northern Arizona. Against the Lumberjacks, Crenshaw also tied a career-high with six digs and recorded six total blocks. Her 5.31 points per game is second-best in America East.

 

Scheetz led the Retrievers with a .382 hitting percentage, committing just nine errors on 68 total attacks during UMBC's opening weekend of action. The rookie also averaged 2.92 kills per game and had a team-high 18 assisted blocks in the four-game tournament at LaSalle. Scheetz averaged 1.67 blocks per game to lead the conference.

 

As the primary setter, Uitti guided the Wildcats to a 5-2 record, the team's best start since 1997. Uitti compiled 237 assists for an average of 11.29 through the seasons first 21 games. The sophomore setter started all seven matches, contributing 18 kills on a .200 hitting percentage. She also ranks third on the team in service aces and digs as well as fourth in blocks.

UAlbany (2-4,0-0 America East) started off the 2007 season with tournament play at Northern Arizona and Buffalo before visiting Syracuse in non-conference play... The Great Danes dropped matches to New Mexico State and the host Lumberjacks at the NAU Tournament, but came away with a 3-0 win over UC Davis... At the Western New York Invitational, UAlbany fell, 3-1, to West Virginia, but defeated Buffalo, 3-1, on the second day of tournament play... The Great Danes finished their western New York road trip with a 3-0 loss to in-state rival Syracuse on Labor Day... Senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw (Birmingham, Ala./Hoover) leads the team, averaging 4.38 kills, 1.05 blocks and 1.10 digs per game... Crenshaw has led the team in kills in four of the first six games played, including a career-best 28-kill performance against Northern Arizona... She has recorded four-straight double-digit kill matches, tallying 17 against UC Davis, 17 versus West Virginia and 14 in the win over Buffalo... Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey (Brampton, Ontario/Cardinal Leger) leads a group of six newcomers to the Great Danes’ rotation... In six matches, Cowdrey is averaging 2.76 kills and 2.71 digs, while also recording a team-high 12 service aces... She has recorded two double-doubles of the kill-dig variety, once in the win over UC Davis, in which she notched 11 kills and 10 digs... She then posted a new career high against Buffalo, tallying 18 kills and 10 digs... Cowdrey has totaled double-digit dig totals in five of six matches to start the season... Sophomore Samantha Jacobson (Geln Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and freshman Brooke Stanley (Hendersonville, N.C./West Henderson) are splitting the setting duties for the Great Danes, averaging 5.33 and 6.38 assists per game, respectively... Freshman Tawny Dahmes (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) is leading the team defensively, averaging a team-best 3.48 digs per game at the libero position... UAlbany will visit Jacksonville State on Sunday, Sept. 9.
