1. Maybe he is doing a similar thing to Ambrose. Attending Albany this year with financial aid and then next year receiving one of the available basketball scholarships. Since he is eligible academically to play this year (unlike Ambrose as a partial qualifier) he can play for the team. Not sure if that is exactly what is taking place, but it's probably something like that.

  2.

I’m so high on this guy, I’m just hoping he stays low and no one better comes knocking on his door. As of right now he has only made a verbal so he can change his mind at any point. Hopefully he will stay committed to us, ultimately I think it will come down to how well we do this season. If we can get another NCAA berth he will be excited to come here and be a part of something great. Otherwise our league doesn’t have that much to offer especially the down year we had last year. Can you imagine this guy and Ambrose? Might be the best beckcourt we ever had.

I agree that making the NCAA tournament again this year would be big in keeping Little. Another factor where I think Albany has already helped themselves is bringing in other talented players. I think bringing in guys like Ambrose and James can only help influence Little that this is an up and coming program.

Plus don't forget this quote from Coach Will Brown on his website:

"We already have a commitment from a wing player from Chicago. We will have two more scholarships available and would like to bring in a pure point guard and a perimeter player that can really score the ball!"

I think we can assume the wing player from Chicago is Little. The way I read it Brown seems pretty confident he will live up to his verbal commitment.

The pure PG sounds like James and the perimeter player that can score sounds like Ambrose.

  3. For some reason Scout and Rivals don't have any info on Howard Little so I thought I would look at the guys ranked right before and after him to get an idea of what caliber of player he is. I took a look at the 2 guys ranked right ahead of him and the 2 guys right after him. Here is how Scout and Rivals had them rated:

#37) Jeff Robinson - 4 stars on Scout, 3 stars on Rivals - Committed to Memphis

#38) James Anderson - 4 stars on Scout, 4 stars on Rivals - Offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Oklahoma and Kansas

#39) Howard Little - no info on either Scout or Rivals - Verbal to Albany

#40) Lance Storrs - 3 stars on Scout, 3 stars on Rivals - Committed to Georgia Tech

#41) Jordan Crawford - 3 stars on Scout, not listed on Rivals - Offer from Xavier

I know the ratings don't really mean that much, but it seems like he is in some pretty good company.

  4. Not sure what type of competition he was going up against, but his stats were pretty damn good regardless of who they played.

    15.9 PPG

    7.1 RPG

    8.6 APG

    3.3 SPG

    0.5 BPG

    62% FG

    88% FT

    57% 3ptFG

Plus they have him listed at 6'0 195 lbs. I think Ambrose is listed at 6'0 205 lbs.

They must be pretty strong dudes to be about 200 lbs at 6'0. Plus the scouting reports say they both can play above the rim. I can't help but get excited about these guys.

  5. PrepStars.com lists Lance James of Leap Academy as # 212 nationally, just for comparison sake (and nothing else) they ranked Edwin Ubiles Siena's Top Recruit #291.

Remember take all these rating sites with a "grain of salt".

(Perpstars list HS Srs and Prep School players together.)

    From Prepstars

James might be the best little guard no one has heard about. It will be extremely interesting to watch how his college career unfolds.

Any of the other Albany recruits on their list? Ambrose, Little, Gifford, etc.

Everyone says that he is the most explosive guard that theyve ever seen but he doesnt get the recognition. He plays for a school called Our Savior New American and is constantly dropping big buckets against the best competition. He has a game like Iverson but can jump out of the gym. I would like to know what college is he going to. I'm also wondering if someone can get him into the most recognizable camps because Rick Pitino and any other D1 coach with common sense should take a look at this kid. He scored 27 points on Wayne Ellington who is supposed to be the #1 guard in the country.

Timmy Ambrose is the real deal. I have had the pleasure of watching him play several times and speaking with him several times. He is above average in every aspect of the game. I know that several high major colleges have shown interest( St. Johns, UMass, etc.). Good luck to this classy young man wherever he ends up.

King James Shooting Stars Classic Recap

Tim Ambrose (6'2" Sr. SG, Centereach (NY) Our Savior New American) Well-built guard is very athletic and really knows how to score the ball. He's great at driving and finishing, while also getting some transition baskets, going for 32 points in one game. High-major minus prospect may prep next year, as he still needs a qualifying test score.

  7. I ran across this article while surfing the web. It speaks very highly of Lee McElroy and what he has done for Albany athletics. Also a blurb in there on Carl Ross and how in past years he wouldn't have even been an option for Albany.

    http://albany.bizjournals.com/albany/stori...us1.html?page=1

    The 'sizzle' lingers

UAlbany administrators had said that just getting to the NCAA basketball tournament was reward enough for the team, especially considering it has been in Division I only since 1999-2000. But McElroy said the way UAlbany lost to Connecticut--ahead by 12 points in the second half before falling 72-59--has made all the difference.

"I've never seen a situation where you lose a game and it has such a positive impact on the institution and our program," he said.

Lose that game by 40 points, as 16th-seeded teams like UAlbany frequently do to top seeds in the NCAA tournament, and UAlbany's appearance "wouldn't have had any significance," McElroy said. "No one would have cared. We would have been back to square one."

As it is, the program continues to "sizzle" because of the NCAA tournament experience, McElroy said.

Gov. George Pataki honored the basketball team at the Executive Mansion in recognition of the squad becoming the first State University of New York team to ever make the Division I men's tournament. Pataki noted that in his 11-plus years as governor, he'd honored only three sports teams at the mansion: the New York Giants when they moved their training camp to UAlbany, the 2003 Syracuse University national basketball champions and UAlbany's 2006 squad.

UAlbany coaches are getting access to recruits they did not have before this basketball season. The team beat out Nebraska for Carl Ross, a junior college transfer from San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif., in April.

"There's no way before that [NCAA tournament appearance] happened that he would even be talking to us; we wouldn't have been able to contact him," McElroy said.

Now, the trick is to parlay the athletic success into more private support for the program from boosters and to get a real football stadium built on campus, McElroy said. Plans call for a 10,000-seat stadium for a program that has begun offering what will eventually be 30 athletic scholarships.

  9. Tim Ambrose: An Exciting Player To Watch

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tim Ambrose is a delight to watch. The Our Savior New American guard is an athletic wonder who can sky over bigger bodies despite not being more than 6-foot tall. Ambrose is expected to compete this summer with the New York Elite ...

Tim Ambrose is a delight to watch. He is an athletic guard who can dazzle a defender with his speed, strength or athletic skills. Ambrose, a 6-foot 2007 recruit played last season at Our Savior New American in Centereach, N.Y. It's likely that Tim will be at a prep school this Fall.

Ambrose already has some college offers on the table. "Albany, Stony Brook, and Fordham have offered," Ambrose said in our last conversation. "But I am not sure what I will do."

The staff of the New York Elite indicate that Tim is still open and searching for a prep school. Ambrose stated recently that he is interested in Notre Dame Prep, Stoneridge, and Patterson.

Tim polished his game as a senior this past year under OSNA head coach Ron Stelzer. Earlier in the season there was some interest from schools like Southern Cal, St. John's, Georgetown, Clemson, and Fairfield. But no offers were made.

Ambrose must take care of business in the classroom. As he accomplishes this, it's likely many more division one schools will jump aboard to recruit this exciting athlete.

  10. . . . Wasn't it Tony who stated with all Siena's inherent advantages UA would never be able to compete with them for recruits. I think we may be holding our own. . . .

    14755

I take Tony's prognostications about UAlbany with a grain of salt, and my diet restrictions don't allow for extra sodium.

I just remember how he predicted that VCU would "wipe the floor" with UAlbany and that we would be destroyed by UConn.

I'm just happy our team just went out and did its thing, particularly the last part of the season when it counts the most.

    14756

Read the rule carefully fella's; Jamar must be headed to GRADUATE school to transfer in a fifth year. He, as I understand, did not graduate this year.

The rule does not affect him.

    14761

Yeah, I was just assuming he had graduated without really confirming that. Sorry to get everyone all excited over nothing. My bad.

  11. In response to Slickwilly.

Iona beat a Big 12 school on their home floor, nearly beat Kentucky, destroyed a MAC school in the Bracketbuster, and was beating LSU by 5 at halftime.  They were a senior laden team and play in a better conference.  UAlbany did not beat anyone of substance this year and plays in an inferior conference.  So yes, I do follow college basketball and will stick by my original statement.

The question is, do you know anything about college basketball????

    13913

I already said that I thought Iona was a better team this year. I just think that if they played Albany it would have been a competitive game. Probably decided by 6-8 points in Iona's favor. I think of a spanking as a 15-20 point loss which I don't think would have been the case. Maybe if Burtt and Soliver were both on fire, which again is unlikely due to their streakiness.

Also, how about the fact that Siena beat Iona in their 2nd matchup last year. That must mean that Siena would have spanked Albany last year too. Oh wait, Siena played Albany and only won in OT. Hmmmm.....

  12. Hmmm....Manhattan won at Maryland in the NIT, but of course the Lesser Danes are better according to the rankings.

Oh wait, I forgot, Siena beat Albany and was up by nearly 20 at one point in the game.  Doesn't matter though, because the rankings say otherwise.

P.S. Iona would have spanked Albany this year.

    13894

I live in Weschester. I went to Ione Prep. I watched Iona pretty much every time I had the chance. I have family that went there and root for Iona against anyone, except Albany. They were a better team this year (Burtt and Soliver are gone, what about next year?), but once you post that they would spank Albany you lose all credibility. Are you really a college basketball fan?

Anyway, I think what it really comes down to is that you are pissed off that Albany is going to be on your level (MAAC) sooner rather than later. What does Iona, Siena, Manhattan really have to offer that Albany can't? Albany is an up and coming team and you are pissed about it. Siena had some strong teams in the past and will continue to be a competitive team every year. Do you really think that Albany will never get to that level or beyond in the near future?
